He refers to other sheep which do not belong to this fold, who will become part of the same flock. This likely refers to the Gentiles, to all peoples beyond Israel. The Shepherd extends his flock, but emphasizes that there is still only one flock. Jesus spoke forcefully and frequently, especially in the Gospel of John, of the importance of unity among those who follow him. We who follow Jesus are expected to embrace the other sheep, to respect and celebrate differences among Christians. We are expected to learn from one another. All those things that seem to divide Jesus followers in culture, ethnicity, or history of conflict fade in comparison with the deeper unity of the one flock under one Shepherd. Living in unity is essential for us to be faithful and credible witnesses of Christ to the world. 4 Welcome Honor Empower YES INITIATIVE The journey of the Yes Initiative is a Conscious Awakening to the power the Holy Spirit has given to each of us to actively engage in the Mission of Jesus. For so long we have not been informed nor empowered to reach the potential for which we have all been created by our wonderful God. This Initiative is to stir each of our pots to see and then to Belong to our parish. And in our belonging to move from taking what the church has to offer, to giving of who we are to build the Kingdom of the Father. Our YES is our challenge for all to Step up to the Plate and take our rightful place in becoming a Disciple and inviting others to walk with us. So in the word of the Jedi of Star Wars, may the Force be with Us!! A NEW LANGUAGE FOR A NEW DIRECTION This YES Initiative requires a new language that the Church has given us since Vatican II. First, as a people we are called the Laity, that is those not ordained or in the religious state. By our Baptism all have a part to play by directing every day affairs according to the will of God. The Laity must bring God s enlightenment and order to society. A big undertaking, to say the least, but one that is essential to Discipleship and the building of unity through the Holy Spirit. Pope Pius XII said the Laity are on the front lines and must have a clear consciousness of actually being Church. Notice the emphasis on being Church and not going to Church. This has been the direction of our Catholic Church since Vatican II, just never acted upon. Again, the challenge is to move from simply doing or going to Church to accepting the gift of the Spirit we received at Baptism to become a people creating a sense of belonging, Welcoming those we meet, Honoring their journey and Empowering all to awaken to the gift they are for the Body of Christ. 4

6 Worship Centennial News Sunday, April 22, 2018 Bishop Provost Ordained - On April 23, 2007, another native son of would be ordained for the Episcopacy. Msgr. Glen John Provost, a native of Lafayette, was serving as Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima, when he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to serve as the third Bishop of the Diocese of Lake Charles. Bishop Provost was ordained by Archbishop Hughes of New Orleans. His Co-Consecrators were Bishop Jarrell and Bishop Speyrer, who served as the first Bishop of Lake Charles. Bishop Jarrell and Bishop Speyrer are both native sons to the Diocese, from Opelousas and Leonville respectively. The year 2018 is joyous and wonderful for in this year we are privileged to celebrate 100 years of Catholicism, 100 years of spreading the Love of God to the people of South Louisiana by providing the sacraments, celebrating Mass, encouraging the afflicted, visiting the sick and comforting the dying. These have been 100 years of blessing for all of us who have had the privilege to be the face of God to the people of Acadiana. As we celebrate, however, it is also important to recognize that there have been times when those who have been called to ministry in order that the Lord s forgiveness, healing and peace may be experienced by all, have been the cause of much pain and suffering within our community. In order that through the joy of our celebration, those who have been hurt by the Church s ministers may not be forgotten, Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel and the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette wish to recognize, as part of our Century of Love, those among us who deserve our continued prayers, support and love as they heal from the wounds of abuse at the hands of those, who, by virtue of orders, were called to be ministers of the Church. To this end, at a prayer service for all victims of abuse in any form, Bishop Deshotel invites the people of the Diocese of Lafayette to join him in a Eucharistic Prayer Service and a dedication of a monument that will serve as a reminder to all of our constant need to keep in prayer all those who have been hurt by the Church s ministers. The Prayer Service and Dedication Ceremony will take place at 6pm on Friday, April 27, 2018 in front of Immaculata Chapel, adjacent to the Diocese of Lafayette Central Office, 1408 Carmel Drive in Lafayette. All are invited to this prayerful event. Is There More To Life? Explore Alpha What Is Alpha? Alpha is a series of 11 interactive sessions in a small group setting that explores the basics of Christian faith. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation in a relaxed and respectful atmosphere. It is run over an eleven week period, with meetings held one evening a week. The Alpha course is free of charge. Alpha has been experienced by over 29 million people has been endorsed by the Catholic Church. What to Expect Good Food Every Alpha starts with shared time together over food. It s a great way to get to know one another and build fellowship. Good Films All of the 25 minute Alpha films shown each are designed to spark good conversations while exploring the big issues of faith and unpacking the fundamentals of Christianity. Every film addresses a particular question and each film builds on the next topic. Good Discussions - For many people this is the most valuable part of their Alpha experience: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on that week s topic and discuss it as a small group. You are free to discuss as little or as much as you wish. Nobody is forced to say anything and nothing is out of bounds. Who Is Alpha For? Alpha Is For All Adults Whether you are a cradle Catholic, it matters not. Alpha is for the churched or the unchurched. It is for the believer or the non-believer. Come as a couple, come with a friend or come alone. When? The next Alpha session begins on May 10th. The meetings are on Thursday nights, starting at 6:30 pm. at the Holy Cross Calais Center. Each session lasts about 2 hours and will end on time. 9 Disciple Formation Kristi Graham VBS Registration is now open!! Ages for campers are from 4 years old to entering 6 th grade. Volunteers are always welcomed and appreciated from teens (17 and under) to adults (18 and over). Please note that anyone 18 and over must be safe environment trained. VBS registration forms can be found on our website at in the entrances of church, and will be sent home with your child this week if they attend our Disciple Formation classes. The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis remarkable exhortation on evangelization, is quickly gaining its place among the most powerful and inspiring papal documents of all time. The Joy of the Gospel is a passionate call for every Christian to be constantly ready to bring the love of Jesus to others. Holy Cross is offering a six-session reflection study on the Joy of the Gospel. This study focuses on the three main themes contained in Pope Frances letter. The study guide can be downloaded from the internet or a copy can be obtained from Holy Cross. joyweb.pdf The study guide is self-contained with quotes from the document, narratives on the three themes and questions for discussion. The sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings from April 25 through May 30, 2018, 6:30-8:00 PM in Faith Hall. There is no cost for the study. Please call the Holy Cross office to register for the study, The purpose of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations is to publically fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). As a climax to a prayer that is continually offered throughout the Church, it affirms the primacy of faith and grace in all that concerns vocations to the priesthood and to the consecrated life. While appreciating all vocations, the Church concentrates its attention this day on vocations to the ordained ministries (priesthood and diaconate), to the Religious life in all its forms (male and female, contemplative and apostolic), to societies of apostolic life, to secular institutes in their diversity of services and membership, and to the missionary life, in the particular sense of mission "ad gentes" marks the 55th Anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations 9
