This contemporary discussion recalls the debate between the Sadducees and Pharisees of Jesus time. One party to such controversy, the Sadducees, brought Jesus into the debate. Opportunists in politics, conservatives in religion, these Sadducees had held to the ancient conception of a dim survival of souls in a problematic sheol. They dismissed the idea of the resurrection of the dead, articulated well after Moses, as useless innovation. In this spirit they propose to Jesus one of those bizarre cases dear to casuists of every age. Basing themselves on the levirate law, which required a man to marry the childless widow of his brother, they complicate things to the extreme in order to ridicule the theory they reject. Jesus takes the question to a higher level. In the new world of the resurrection, it will no longer be necessary to marry and reproduce in order to survive. Our experience of God is not restricted to the brief and passing time of a human life. Those who know the presence of God within the limits of a corruptible existence are drawn to hope that they will remain in that presence forever MASS INTENTION BOOK The 2017 Mass Intention Book is now open. Forms are available in the Narthex, the parish office and on the website. Each family may choose one weekend and three weekdays. Requests will be honored on a first come, first served basis and we will do our best to accommodate all requests. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDED FOR SUNDAY 10:30 AM MASS & SATURDAY 4:00 PM MASS If you are presently an Eucharistic Minister, we need Eucharistic Ministers for the 10:30 Sunday Mass and also for the Saturday 4:00 Mass. Due to the lower numbers of ministers, some volunteers are serving 3 weeks out of a 4 week month. (There are more than enough ministers for the 8:00 am). If you can help, or even serve at a Mass that is not your regular attended Mass, please call Shirley at VETERAN S DAY MASS The Veteran s Day Mass will be on Friday, November 11 at 10:00 am. (Note: there will be no Mass at 9:00 am this day.) ELIZABETH MINISTRY Did you know?...holy Sepulcher s chapter of the Elizabeth Ministry is here for the support of our new mothers? In the spirit of Mary and Elizabeth, we have a team of women who can offer mentoring if you are experiencing difficulties during pregnancy or following birth. MILITARY SERVICES COLLECTION Today s collection will help the Archdiocese for the Military Services to bring the Church s full range of pastoral services to the men and women in uniform, as well as their families, and patients in the nation s VA Medical Centers. The Archdiocese receives no government funding. The military does not allow a percentage of collections in its chapels to go to the military Archdiocese. It depends entirely on private giving to serve those who serve. This collection will be this weekend, November 5-6. SIGN UP FOR ONLINE GIVING AFTER MASS If you need help setting up your online giving account or have questions about online giving, Dana Knox, Parish Secretary, will be available after each Mass this weekend to assist with set up or to answer any questions. Online Giving is easy to use and requires no special knowledge other than how to access the internet. You can set up recurring or one time donations. HOLIDAY BLOOD DRIVE Did you know that 93% of us are to use blood at least once in our lifetime? Blood donations are needed for a variety of reasons such as: cancer and leukemia patients, orthopedic surgeries, car accidents, burn victims, trauma cases, etc. Your one blood donation can help save the lives of up to three hospital patients. Our holiday blood drive will be held Sun., Nov. 27 from 8:00 am - 1:30 pm in the Cafeteria. Mark your calendar and plan to donate! THE HOLY FAMILY PRAYER PROGRAM The Holy Family Prayer Program began August 4, 2015 at the 133rd Supreme Convention in Philadelphia. This program features an image of the Holy Family. Each Knights of Columbus jurisdiction received several Holy Family images, which will be the centerpiece of prayer services conducted in churches and council meeting places throughout the Order for the duration of the program. This icon is temporarily on display in our church narthex. You are welcome to pick up a prayer book and card found under the icon. SPAGHETTI DINNER IS HERE! Back by popular demand, brought to you by the Holy Sepulcher Knights of Columbus, is a delicious spaghetti dinner on Saturday, November 19 at the school cafeteria from 4:30 pm - 7:00 pm. Cost is $9.00 for adults and $7.50 for children. See you there! Thank you for your support! NO TURKEY SHOOT THIS YEAR There will NOT be a turkey shoot this year at Holy Sepulcher. With the new school playground equipment in place, there is not an adequate safety zone perimeter available to hold the event here. The Knights of Columbus is considering holding it in the future at another local location if one becomes available to use at no cost. If you ve been thinking about helping out, it s not too late to be an aide or a substitute. Chimbote Mission Today and next Sunday, November 13, we will be participating in a fundraiser with the school for the Maternity Hospital in Chimbote, Peru. Children are encouraged to donate whatever they can to this mission, which provides service for over 17,000 patients a month, who otherwise could not afford health care. Lighthouse Ministries TOY DRIVE coming up. The toys/gifts go to families in need served through the Food Bank and Lighthouse Ministries. We will be gathering toys/gifts on Sundays of Faith Formation classes: November 20, December 4 & 11. UPCOMING PRE-BAPTISM CLASS First-time parents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation class. Every Sunday we have the Children s Liturgy of the Word during the 10:30am Mass. All children from the ages of 3 years old through 3 rd grade up are invited. This is a great opportunity for adults and high school teens to help the children learn the Word of God. This does not require a weekly commitment; only once a month or so. Training will be provided. To find out more or to volunteer, contact Amy in the Faith Formation Office. SAINT OF THE WEEK St. Leo the Great ( ). Feast Day: November 10. Born in Italy, St. Leo became a priest and then pope in 440. At the council of Chalcedon (451) he was responsible for the definitive teaching that Jesus Christ is one Divine Person with two natures. Pope Leo is known for his courageous efforts to save Rome from invasion by the Huns. Without a weapon, he rode out to meet the pagan leader, Attila. When they met, Attila surprisingly showed the pope great honor and made a treaty of peace with him. Attila said afterward that he had seen two mighty figures standing by the pope while he spoke. It is believed that they were the great apostles, Peter and Paul. They had been sent by God to protect Pope Leo and the Christians. Because of his humility, charity and courage, Pope Leo was loved by all. He died on November 10, 461.
