2 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 17, 2014 Called to Act in God s Name Let all the nations praise you! (Psalm 67:4) today s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other Hebrew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an invitation to God to act, to intervene in human lives in a manner that will cause everyone not just the Chosen People to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is something of a put up or shut up challenge to God, the sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not afraid to make. The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing the appearance of the Canaanite woman with Behold! (Matthew 15:22) Behold! is a scriptural flag that tells us that God is about to act or announce something through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus, God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody among Jesus followers would have believed to be an agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might passively inform or perhaps even actively challenge God to do something so that everyone will come to belief, but God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and persons of our daily lives so that God can act through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through our living. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA) Is there someone in your family, among your friends or neighbors, who might be interested in joining our Catholic family, especially someone who is not an active member of any religious denomination? Beginning this fall, on one evening of each week, a series of classes in our Catholic Faith will be offered here at Holy Sepulcher Parish. This is a beautiful opportunity to gradually become aware of the entire process of introducing new members to our church; it is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). It is a very ancient Rite, recently restored in the life of the church. The Rite involves the entire parish welcoming the converts through the individual sponsors from the parish community, who introduce the converts to parish activities. As one begins the process of Christian Initiation, no commitment is required, other than to see if the Catholic way is the way for a person to find Christ in his or her life. The classes continue until the end of Lent, Those who go through the program and want to become Catholic are baptized; if they are already baptized, they will make their profession of faith. Baptism takes place at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. In the early Church, this was the time for new members to be received into the church. To help the Candidates, sponsors are needed from our parish. We all have a beautiful gift from our Father: Our Faith! Let s share it! Bob at the parish office. Please note that Federal Guidelines (HIPPA) want to protect the privacy rights of patients in the hospital. The hospital can not give out any information pertaining to a patient. ARE YOU A REGISTERED PARISHIONER? We are discovering that people think they are a member of Holy Sepulcher because they attend Mass here, but have never registered. Please note: f you have not filled out a registration form and do not receive monthly envelopes through the mail, we may not have a record of you. Consequently, when you want to be married, have your child baptized, or are in need of a sponsor letter, we will not know if you are a registered member. Newly married couples should fill out a registration form with their new address etc. Register on line at or by stopping at the parish office. Also, please let us know, if you are moving out of the parish. Thank you. The SOCIABLES, a social group for those 50 and older, will have a board meeting on Tuesday, August 19 at 10:00 am in the church conference room. New members welcome. Next week is the combined collections for Catholic Communications and Catholic University of America. The collection for the Catholic Communications Campaign (CCC) funds projects that bring the Gospel message to the faithful and to those seeking the faith through the internet and social media as well as radio and television. A portion of this collection stays with our local diocese for communication projects with our local media. The Catholic University of America (CUA) is the national university of the Catholic Church located in Washington D.C. Every dollar given directly supports financial aid for students from dioceses across the country, including ours. Please support the important work of the CCC and CUA with your generous contribution. Call Bonnie with questions at HOLY SEPULCHER SOCCER LEAGUE Holy Sepulcher, for the first time, will participate in the diocesan soccer league this fall. We plan to field two squads, a 2nd-3rd grade team and a 3rd-4th grade team, both of which will compete in the diocese s developmental division that s intended to be an instructional league for our young players. Practices will begin in mid-august and the first game is set for the first weekend in September. The Holy Sepulcher School soccer program is made possible through a $4,000 grant from Dick s Sporting Goods Foundation that was matched by more than $4,000 contributed by the school community and friends of Holy Sepulcher. Because of this generous financial support, the school athletic committee is waiving the registration fee for the sport and providing a no-cost soccer jersey for each player! Around the Community: JACKSON BLAIR MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING The 2nd annual Jackson Blair Golf Outing will raise money for the Jackson Blair Memorial Fund, providing two annual scholarships and family grief support for the lifelong journey of families that have experienced a tragic loss. DESSERTS NEEDED FOR MEALS-ON-WHEELS Five dozen servings of desserts are needed for the South Butler County Community Meals-on-Wheels for each delivery date (every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) during the month of September. Any dessert type item is welcome, but please leave cakes and cupcakes unfrosted due to difficulty in packaging. Desserts can be brought to the kitchen in Glade Run Church, 1091 Pittsburgh Rd., Valencia, PA around 9:00 am during delivery days. If you are unable to deliver your dessert, please call Dana at the parish office to have other arrangements made. FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTIONS World Apostolate of Fatima/Blue Army will have First Sat.
