But when he saw how strong the wind was, he became frightened. How can we describe Peter? At once faithful and fearful, his jumbled responses remind us that he was no spiritual superman, well intentioned though he may have been. Peter wanted to believe, and in fact showed a great deal of confidence in Christ, but the temptation to doubt was strong enough to knock him off his feet, literally. O you of little faith, why did you doubt? Jesus reprimanded Peter. The words seem harsh. After all, Peter was the only one who had enough faith to even try something as ludicrous as stepping out of the boat onto the water in the first place. But perhaps Jesus wanted to emphasize that our faith needs to be strong enough to weather the storm, so to speak. If we only believe in Jesus when the wind is calm and the waves are gone, is that truly having faith in him? Is that actually trusting in his supreme power over the forces of the universe? Peter began to sink as soon as a challenge appeared. Jesus called him, and he calls us, to stay on our feet even when the winds begin to blow. So, what are the winds that threaten our faith? What kinds of gusts are blowing today? Whatever it might be--health problems, financial concerns, relational strugglesnone of it is too much for Jesus to handle. But we must step out in faith and trust him! And we need to keep our eyes on him as we do so, instead of getting distracted by the force of the challenges we face. Jesus is bigger than any problem. We have nothing to fear as long as we are walking towards him.

3 AUG. 13, 2017 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3 Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Tuesday, Aug. 15 The origins of this celebration seem tied to the Council of Ephesus (431) which reaffirmed Mary to be Theotokos, the Mother of God. A celebration of the Council at Jerusalem may have been united with a commemoration of Mary s death observed at a local shrine. The original Eastern titles of the celebration support this: anapausis (the resting or death ), metastasis (Latin transius or Passover ). The feast spread throughout the East and was adopted at Rome in the seventh century. In the eighth century the title of the Assumption became firmly established for the feast. The gospel of Luke 1:39-56 has us contemplate Mary and her cousin Elizabeth trading compliments. Blest are you among women and blest is the fruit of your womb. If the Virgin s child is blessed, how could she be otherwise? The basis for all her privileges is her divine maternity. Intimately involved in the redemptive incarnation of the Son of God, Mary must also share in his resurrection. Her real greatness lies more in her faith, which caused her first to conceive in her heart, even before conceiving in her womb (Augustine). Blest is she who trusted, first in the announcement made to her by the angel Gabriel, but also in the whole adventure which it implied. For a vocation is always a discovery. Mary was continually challenged to renew, to broaden, to deepen the act of faith asked of her in Nazareth. Her vocation led to the foot of the cross. There the true greatness of her faith was revealed. There her song of praise took on new depth. Thus she became the model of believers. Her assumption into the fullness of life is hope for all. The Solemnity of Assumption it is a Holy Day of Obligation. We invite you to join us in the celebration of this wonderful & beautiful Holy Day honoring the Blessed Mother on Monday, Aug. 14 at 7:00 pm (Vigil) or Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 9:00 am and 7:00 pm. Mission Cooperative Collection: August This year s mission appeal will be with The Order of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives. This order was founded in 1198 by John DeMatha and Felix of Valois, to freeing captives and performing works of mercy. The mission appeal preacher is Fr. Santhosh George, O.S.S.T., the Director of Mission Development for the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives (the Trinitarians). Fr. Santhosh brings tremendous enthusiasm, a high level of personal investment and a sincere desire to help unite American Catholics and out Trinitarian priests, brothers, seminarians and laity in India in a common mission of mercy and redemption. Along with the Order s mission of ransoming Christian captives, each Trinitarian Community serves the people of its area by performing works of mercy. Redemption and mercy are at the center of the Trinitarian charism. The ministries they serve are: pastoral care for the persecuted Christians, ministry to the sick and disabled, education, prison ministry, retreat centers and youth ministry. For over 810 years in the world and 30 years in India, Trinitarians have chosen to bear witness to God s love in communities where the effects of persecution and poverty are felt most severely. Your support is vital to furthering our missionary work for the persecuted, poor, marginalized, sick and suffering. Your encouragement sustains the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives not only financially, but also through your valued friendship. In today s Gospel Jesus comes to the aid of his followers and tells them not to be afraid. Even more, he reminds them that if they trust in him they cannot fail. Mother Seton Marian Pilgrimage Postponed The Mother Seton Marian Pilgrimage has been postponed until October. More details will be available at a later date. Rosary to The Blessed Mother &The Sacred Heart for Peace & Love! Each Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm, we have been gathering together, in the Day Chapel, before the 7:00 pm Mass, to say the Rosary for peace as Our Blessed Mother has requested us to do, when she appeared in Fatima. We are inviting all our parishioners to come and join us, to honor Her Son, Jesus, asking His blessings, on all of us, and all the churches, in The Diocese of Pittsburgh, as we continue On Mission for Church Alive. Let us continue to help make our transitions throughout all our churches, be done peacefully and successfully! By our prayers and trusting in The Sacred Heart of Jesus, and asking Our Blessed Lady s help, we can accomplish this mission and make Our Catholic Churches come alive again by working together, through the guidance of The Holy Spirit also. Let us pray for Bishop Zubik, all priests, deacons and all of us so our hearts will be open to the will of God, accepting what He is desiring of us, whatever his will may be! May God bless all of us! (The Rosary is also recited for any special intention you may have.) Girl Time Holy Sepulcher is partnering with New Life Ministry Church to provide hygiene bags for girls in the third world. These bags will enable girls to go to school and get meals during their time of the month. An initial meeting will be on Wednesday, Aug. 16 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm in the Youth and Young Adult Center. The hygiene bags are homemade and help is needed in many different areas. This ministry is open to both men and women. Hands on work is needed for tracing the patterns, measuring, cutting, sewing, and ironing. Donations for fabric and thread are appreciated. The fabric must be 100% cotton or polyester and dark solids only. The thread must be cotton and also in dark colors. Donations can be left in the coat room, marked Girl Time. Bag Assembly will be on: Mondays from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm starting on Aug. 28 in the Youth and Young Adult Center. (No session on Sept. 4). Stay as little or as long as your schedule allows. Holy Sepulcher School will welcome 16 new families and three pre-school classes consisting of 42 students! Thanks to the generosity of the Knights of Columbus we will be able to open a new classroom in the Early Childhood Center. We are very happy to have two certified teachers with two teacher assistants for our pre-school staff: Mrs. Marie Srock, Director of the Pre-School, Mrs. Lisa Rothrauff, Teacher, Mrs. Cindy Shadle, Assistant Mrs. Carla Spotts, Assistant There is only room for a couple more students. STAFF CHANGES Miss Ashley Blystone will serve as Assistant Principal this year and Mrs. Adrianne Shifter will be our Second Grade Teacher. Core Team members take an active role in being present with our teens. They volunteer much of their time in helping with Life Nights and retreats, being present at events and trips, and most importantly leading our teens closer to our Lord. Life Support Team: These team members support the ministry through a variety of tasks such as preparing and serving delicious meals, taking photos for the website, or creating exciting environments for a particular Life Night.
