Jesus asks a similar question in different Gospel passages, but the request of James and John is not repeated on any other occasion. "Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left." They ask not for knowledge of God, not for crooked limbs to be straightened nor for the blind to see. They ask for power and authority. Jesus' response should trouble them. "You do not know what you are asking." "Can you drink the cup that I drink?" Jesus asks. "They said to him, 'We can.'" But what is Christ's cup? Could James and John have possibly known it or understood it here at the height of Jesus' ministry? Jesus' cup is the cup of trial, of difficulty, of public ridicule. His final, thirsting sip occurs as he hangs on the cross. In Christ's kingdom, drinking his cup and participating in his life are not the sharing of power the way we are accustomed. Jesus flips their paradigm. "Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all." The cup of Jesus is the cup of giving oneself. "The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." As Christians, how easy it can be to want the acclaim of good deeds, the gratitude for volunteering, the attention for donating to the church. "It shall not be so among you." If you are overlooked, offer thanks to God for imitating Jesus, rather than bitter complaint at someone else's oversight. Look for opportunities to do good deeds unnoticed. Smith Deacon OFFERTORY COLLECTION The custom of bringing forward the collection together with the bread and wine is not required by Church s liturgical guidelines or Diocesan financial directives. With the many duties and responsibilities of the priests, deacons and ushers before, during and after Mass, it seems best for the ushers to place the collection in a secure place immediately after it is taken up (and not bring it into the sanctuary at all). The security of what is contributed by the faithful is of primary importance. Thus, beginning immediately, only the bread and wine will be brought to the altar as the collection is being taken up. TIME CHANGE FOR THE VIGIL MASS FOR ALL SAINTS Thursday, November 1 st is the Feast of All Saints, a holyday of obligation. The Vigil Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 31 st. Vigil Masses here at are usually at 7:00 p.m. However, because of Halloween activities, we will celebrate the Vigil Mass this year at 4:00 p.m. We hope that this time will prove more convenient for families. Masses on the holyday itself, Thursday, November 1 st are at the normal times of 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. MASS ATTENDANCE COUNTS Each October, parishes have been asked to compile their attendance data for the weekend Masses. The purpose of the October Count, which began in 1987, has been to track Saturday/Sunday Mass attendance trends throughout the diocese. This year the diocese has requested that we extend the October Count through January COLONIAL GARDENS LUNCHEON/BINGO A huge, heartfelt THANK YOU goes out to the Ladies of Charity (and their spouses) that helped in anyway with the Colonial Gardens Luncheon/Bingo. 4 PAGE 4 WHAT IS THE BRIDGE PAGE? The Bridge Page is intended to be a weekly insert in the bulletins of both Saint Kilian and Parishes. The symbol on the mast head is the bridge. Bridges are how communities connect, communicate and collaborate. Our parishes are two distinct civil and canonical entities (symbolized by the bell towers of both churches as the bridge supports). But we are united in the same Diocesan grouping and our common commitment to Christ. The contents of The Bridge Page will be items of interest to parishioners of both parishes. ROLE OF THE ASSIGNED PRIEST AND DEACONS? The Bishop has assigned three priests: Rev. Charles Bober Administrator Rev. Charles Baptiste Senior Parochial Vicar Rev. Kenneth Marlovits, Senior Parochial Vicar, Catholic High School Chaplain and four deacons (Deacon Ralph Bachner, Deacon William Carver, Deacon Robert Marshal, and Deacon David Miller) to our grouping (known as Adams-Cranberry-Glade Mills). The assignment letter of each indicated that they are assigned to both parishes simultaneously. That means that they will be ministering in both parishes and you will see them at liturgies in both parishes. ROLE OF THE RETIRED PRIESTS IN RESI- DENCE? When priests retire they may live where they wish. Some live with family members. Some live at Saint John Vianney Manor (the home for retired priests) and some choose to live with other priests in parish rectories where available. There are no assigned duties for retired priests (that s what it means to be retired). But they may be of help to the parish priest when needed. There will be three retired priests living within our grouping: Fr. Dennis Buranosky, Fr. Robert Guay and Fr. Al Semler. These priests have no assigned administrative duties but will be of help to the parishes especially in the celebration of sacraments and pastoral care as their time permits and as needs arise. WHERE ARE THE PRIESTS GOING TO LIVE? Fr. Baptiste and Fr. Semler will be living in the rectory in Glade Mills. Fr. Buranosky and Fr. Guay will be living in the rectory in Mars and Fr. Bober and Fr. Marlovits will be living in the rectory in Cranberry. Bober has been a presence in our school so that he can become acquainted with us and the children with him. Kindergarten was excited to meet him and told him that we have been praying his name aloud each day asking God to give him the grace to be a good shepherd. Fr. Bober was delighted and even recently mentioned this encounter in one of his homilies at St. Killian. School has been eager to embrace our new pastor and we are looking forward to celebrating the Eucharist with Fr. Bober on Fridays at 9 AM. Please join us if you can. He also plans to have class Masses where children in specific grades can ask him questions on their own level. That will be very special! TRINITY Looking for some delicious chocolate? Look no further, School is hosting their annual Christmas Sarris Chocolate Fundraiser. Orders are due by Friday, November 16th. Order forms are available in the Narthex or in the office. GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER IS A SPECIAL GRACE The Holy Trinity is a difficult concept for little ones to grasp...how can 3 be as 1? How is God the Father, God the Son Jesus and God the Holy Spirit all God? This week, the 1st grade class learned about the Holy Trinity about the Holy Trinity using candy corn, both having 3 parts in 1. EDUCATION NEWS Sr. Benita DeMatteis, Faith Formation Director hsfaithformation@zoominternet.net Mrs. Rachael Horstman, Administrative Assistant hs2faithformation@zoominternet.net October 21: Children s Liturgy of the Word 10:30a.m. October 21: Faith Formation Classes at 9:05a.m.-10:15 A recent survey asked nearly 11,000 churchgoing teenagers if they talk to their parents about faith. The results speak for themselves: 12% of the kids reported talking to their mom about their faith and 5% said the same about their father. That takes a moment to sink in, doesn t it? Those numbers are astonishing - in a terrible way. If children aren t talking about their faith with their parents, are they talking about their faith at all? And, if moms and dads aren t teaching and nurturing the faith in their children, who is? Faith-based conversations at home are extremely important. Parents can talk to children of all ages about their faith - even babies who can t talk back yet! There are opportunities for faith-based conversations everywhere. Think about driving your children to and from school, weeknight dinners, or bedtime. Whenever you have five minutes, you have time to talk about Jesus. Our Faith Formation programs in the School and Sunday CCD present many ways to begin a conversation with your children. We were all created to know God and to develop a relationship with him. When did you make a decision to make Christ a part of you? How well do I know Christ? How well do I want to know Him? What can I do to make that happen? 7 PAGE 7 Our New Priests & Deacons We welcome to our parish, Fr. Charles Bober, Fr. Ken Marlovits and Fr. Chuck Baptiste as well as Deacon Ralph Bachner, Deacon William Carver and Deacon Robert Marshall. We are also so glad to continue to have Deacon David Miller with us. In addition, we extend that welcome to the three retired priests who will be living within our Grouping and helping at times with Masses and Sacraments: Fr. Al Semler, Fr. Dennis Buranosky and Fr. Robert Guay. We are very aware that all these priests and deacons have been in parish ministry for many years. We welcome their contribution to our faith community and look forward to sharing our faith and joy with them. Fr. Bober, Open Forum on Wednesday October 24th Fr. Bober will celebrate the 7:00pm mass.
