Jesus alludes to two public misfortunes from the news of his time. He does not refer to them in the manner of those retreat preachers who are only too happy to exploit a parish tragedy to urge people into the confessional. That is not Jesus style. He does not consider violent deaths as divine punishments for sin. Rather, because he detects in his contemporaries a smug complacency, he warns them. They run the risk of being hardened to the urgency of conversion. Even if each of us is like a tree which form many years has given ample proof of its sterlility, God is like that patient farmer who gives his fig tree another chance. This opportunity lasts until the Lord s return. It is highlighted by this annual season of repentance. 3 FEBRUARY 28, 2016 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE 3 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION During the season of Lent, we will have Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesdays (March 2, 9, 16 and 23) from 9:00 am - 6:45 pm. Each Lent we are called to reflection, prayer, penance and fasting. Eucharistic Adoration is an opportunity for us to spend time with Our Lord in quiet prayer, meditation and adoration. Also, some additional ways of prayer and reflection available at Holy Sepulcher to enhance our Lenten journey are Daily Mass and Stations of the Cross. The Lord invited us to come be in His presence and spend time with him. THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU! The Light is Still On for You! is an initiative of the Diocese of Pittsburgh to encourage Catholics to avail themselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is a wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to our Lord. Visit for FAQ s, a short guide to confessions, reflections and more. Confessions will be available on Wednesday, March 9 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm in every Catholic parish in the Diocese. Due to Wednesday evening Mass, Holy Sepulcher will have confessions from 6:00-6:45 pm, Mass from 7:00-7:45 and confessions again from 7:45-9:00 pm. Many moms turn around and choose life at an abortion facility...buy many do not. The reality is that your prayerful presence is the last sign of hope for the baby before the abortion...and your presence is also the first sign of mercy to the woman after the abortion. 40 Days for Life is a campaign of love and mercy. Our Catholic Faith: THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE Our Lord Jesus Christ, initiated the Sacrament of Penance when He said, Receive the Holy Spirit, if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven, if you retain the sins of any, they are retained (John 20:22-23). He also said to Peter, I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven. (Matthew 16:19). With support of the scriptures, our Holy Catholic faith teaches that we are to confess our sins to an ordained priest. Also, referred to as the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession, the Sacrament of Penance consists of four essential elements: 1. Contrition: A heartfelt sorrow and aversion for the sin committed along with the intention to sin no more. 2. Confession: After an examination of conscience, the confessing of at least all serious sins to the priest. 3. Act of Penance: Satisfaction for sins committed and giving redress for injuries done. 4. Absolution: The priest forgives the sins using a special prayer and the sign of the cross. To help ensure the holiness of the Church s members, Catholics having reached the age of discretion are required to confess serious sin at least once a year (Canon 989). To progress in the sacramental life, Catholics are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Penance often with regularity, even if they are not aware of any serious sin. This is a great opportunity for parishioners to ask God for his forgiveness and mercy during this season of renewal and reconciliation. There will be six priests available for the Sacrament of Penance. We invite and welcome you to attend and be reconciled to God and to one another. CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT Next week s collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) needs your help. CCHD was founded to break the cycle of poverty in the United States by funding organizations that help individuals help themselves. With the tradition of improving education, housing situations, and community economic development, CCHD continues to make a positive impact in communities nationwide. A THEOLOGY OF A HOLY DOOR A holy door or porta sancta has been used since the fifteenth century as a ritual expression of conversion. Pilgrims and penitents pass through it as a gesture of leaving the past behind and crossing the threshold from sin to grace, from slavery to freedom, and from darkness to light. Often these rituals are associated with prayer, pilgrimage, sacrifice, confession, and indulgences. But the door finds meaning only when the believer associates the door with Christ. Jesus is the Door! In the words of Pope Francis, There is only one way that opens wide the entrance into the life of communion with God: this is Jesus, the one and absolute way to salvation. To him alone can the words of the Psalmist be applied in full truth: This is the door of the Lord where the just may enter (Ps. 118:20). Saint John Paull II offers a similar exhortation: To focus on the door is to recall the responsibility of every believer to cross its threshold. To pass through that door means to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord; it is to strengthen faith in him in order to live the new life which he has given us. It is a decision which presumes freedom to choose and also the courage to leave something behind, in the knowledge that what is gained is divine life [cf. Mt. 13:44-46] (Saint John Paul II, Incarnationis Mysterium, 8, in the year 2000). John s gospel clearly depicts this relationship between Jesus and us. Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life, and have it more abundantly (John 10:7-10). The holy door in the Diocese of Pittsburgh is located at Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland. The Cathedral is open daily and you have the opportunity to visit the holy door from now until November 20, 2016 (during the Year of Mercy). Sister Anna Marie Gaglia, CSJ, Principal school@holysepulcher.org 4TH GRADE WAX MUSEUM Our 4th grade students were hard at work this past month, researching on their chrome books their chosen historic character. On Friday, they put this knowledge to use as they became the Holy Sepulcher Wax Museum (see picture below). With a touch of a button, our Wax Museum Students came to life, telling the life of their person. PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF MERCY Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.
