Has the cry of Bartimaeus ever escaped your lips? Today's Gospel tells the story of a blind man with a difficult lot in life. He made a living by begging coins off passing travelers. When word reaches him that Jesus will be passing by, this is when he begins his shouts for mercy. Jesus hears Bartimaeus' cry and beckons him forward. "What do you want me to do for you?" Last week, Jesus asked a similar question to James and John. Their response was a clutch for fame. Bartimaeus' response is much humbler. "Lord, I want to see." How strange this interaction must have seemed to the onlookers. The man is blind! Of course he wants to see! But Jesus is always teaching us. By asking us what we want, Jesus reveals the dispositions of our hearts. God already knows them, but do we? By asking James and John to name their ambition, their selfishness is exposed to them and to the other disciples. By asking Bartimaeus to name his longing, his faith is exposed to the entire crowd. Jesus invites participation in our own redemption. He doesn't save us without us! Take some time in silent prayer today. Place yourself in this story of Bartimaeus. Imagine yourself there on the dusty, crowded roadside. Jesus is calling you! When you stand before him, his focus is on you and you alone. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asks. Search your heart. How would you respond? What part of your heart is Jesus asking you to expose? He has come to heal and to restore. May we, too, be sent! "Go... your faith has saved you." INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK As Pope Francis has reminded us, it is in living the Beatitudes that we find the path to holiness. The Beatitudes are not a list of do's and don'ts. Rather, they are a road map to finding our way to others and to the kingdom of God. It is when we enter into the human condition with all of its pain and sorrow that we discover again the creative presence of God guiding us to greater wholeness. Being poor in spirit? being meek and humble? mourning our sorrow and losses and walking with others through theirs? hungering and thirsting for righteousness? being merciful? maintaining a clean heart? pursuing peace? daily taking up the challenge of the Gospel. All bring us into the mystery of humanity and indeed into the mystery of God. The pathway to our relationships and the blueprint detailing our responsibilities are revealed. Are we ready to roll up our sleeves and get dirty.

Saint Mark relates to us very vividly that Bartimaeus, threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus, and that his sight was restored because of his faith and trust in God. Of course, we see many instances in the Gospels of Jesus calling out to others. Often times he calls people to follow him, like those who would be his Apostles. At other times, like his encounter with Zacchaeus, he calls out so that he might stay with Zacchaeus and be of support in his life. In the Church, we most likely think of calling as one s vocation, listening for what purpose God has created us to know, love and serve him. Priests speak of their vocation, or calling, to holy orders and married couples talk of being called to love each other with a sacrificial, unbreakable and unconditional love. And within the call of our vocation, the Lord time and again calls out to us to invite us to share our gifts and abilities in a variety of ways for the good of others and of the Church. As our On Mission for The Church Alive! journey continues forward we are all invited to listen for the Lord calling us by name and seeking new and vibrant ways to respond in faith and generosity. The purpose of the October Count, which began in 1987, has been to track Saturday/Sunday Mass attendance trends throughout the diocese. This year the diocese has requested that we extend the October Count through January FAIR TRADE SALE Mark your calendars! She states: There is within children a yearning, a natural affinity to be at one at home with God. Since I have been ministering with and by children for 60 years, I, too, have experienced this within children. As parents and grandparents, I am sure you have experienced these two great mysteries, the Child and God, seeking each other. Genelda tells the story of a child of atheist parents, upon hearing that the world was created by God proclaimed, I always knew there was a God. And a friend of hers from Bulgaria never heard the word God spoken as she was growing up in a communist country and she shared that as a child she always knew there was a power of love or someone to whom she prayed. Holy Sepulcher Catholic School is hosting their annual Veteran s Day Celebration on Friday, November 9th. Mass is at 10:00 am, followed by an All American Lunch in the cafeteria. We invite all Veterans to our celebration, as we honor them for serving our country and protecting our freedom. Look no further, Holy Sepulcher School is hosting their annual Christmas Sarris Chocolate Fundraiser. Orders are due by Friday, November 16th. Order forms are available in the Narthex or in the office. I am sure we all have stories of children learning to express themselves as they receive communion. One child was heard saying, Are you God? Or a little boy stating after receiving communion, Every time I go to the altar to eat the bread of Jesus, He just makes my heart go thump. Many times children experience their parents as God, giving them the gift of life. They are seeking a blessing, one that is ultimately God s alone to give. But we all need a tangible expression of this reality. Do you have your own stories to share with one another? Unless you become like little children, you shall not enter the kingdom of God
