We might often associate it with Jesus' compassion to the poor, his healings and miracles, and the salvation he won for us. In today's Gospel, we read of John the Baptist. "Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people." Yet as we examine the rest of the reading, we see examples of John's preaching. If you have two cloaks, give one away. Don't cheat others out of their money, extort, or lie. And, of course, the warning that the Messiah is on the move and "his winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Merry Christmas? Not only do John's listeners enjoy his message, but they seem to think he might be the awaited Messiah! To understand today's Gospel, it's important to understand the Jewish people. For most of their history, God's chosen people had been under someone else's heel. They were slaves in Egypt. Their kingdoms were ravaged first by the Assyrians, then the Babylonians. Now they were under the yoke of the Roman Empire. Familiar with being strangers in a strange land, welcoming the stranger, caring for the vulnerable, and enacting justice was incredibly important to them as a people. While John's words may seem odd or strong to our modern ears, this call to justice was welcome, even if it was directed at the hearer. The truth is, no one is exempt from John's call to repentance. We all have further to go in the Christian life. We can all grow in virtue and love our neighbors more generously. The Church gives us the Advent season to examine our own hearts. Did any of John's warnings resonate with you? That could be a great thing to bring to Jesus this week! Please pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of William Chrisman fiancé of Laura Bauer (daughter) of Joe & Vivian Bauer who recently passed away and is enjoying everlasting life.

Usually they appeared with a child or adolescent. Our parishes are very receptive and helpful to those in need. Especially at Christmas, our parishes support food pantries, the Fellowship Dinners and the work of Saint Vincent de Paul and the Ladies of Charity reach many who are in need. If you encounter anyone asking for money at Christmas Masses, please refer them to one of the priests or deacons. They will have the means on hand to assist those who are in need (by means of food or other forms of assistance). CHRISTMAS WAFERS (OPŁATKI): Christmas wafers (opłatki) are available as you leave Mass in the vestibule or at the front desk of the Parish Center (offices). For one envelope (four wafers, three white and one pink, sealed in plastic) the suggested donation is $2.00. These wafers, a custom of Slavic people, are broken (beginning with the eldest) and shared with others at the family table at Christmas, to link our lives with that of the New Born King, the Bread of Life. Each December our school has an opportunity to nominate one of our fabulous students for this honor. This year we have decided to nominate Katherine Riley. Katherine, daughter of Michael and Sandra Riley, is an eighth grade student here at Holy Sepulcher Catholic School and an active member of the parish. She is a very well-rounded young lady. Katherine is devoted to the faith and lives out our Catholic mission. She is not afraid to take education risks and push herself to higher limits. Katherine is involved at Catholic Church as an altar server. She serves both weekday and weekend Masses. Occasionally, Katherine helps with the Children s Liturgy. Academically, Katherine soars to high levels. She is known for taking projects and class assignments to the next level. She willingly participates in several elective academic competitions such as National History Day, Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science, and English Fest; she has received first place in all. Katherine is always busy between school, church, and recreational activities such as scrapbooking, volleyball, band, and forensics. Katherine is a great role model for all her peers in our building and is very deserving of this honor as she exemplifies the holistic nature of Catholic Education. We invite you to the Catholic School Annual Christmas Sing ALong on Friday, December 21st at 1:30pm in the church! Gaudete Sunday: Let us rejoice and be Joyfilled. In today s Gospel, John the Baptist raises our hopes for being ready for Jesus coming, as he once raised the hope for a Messiah in those who flocked to hear him. John gives some concrete, practical suggestions about how to live as God expects. John s preaching still helps get us ready for Jesus coming into our own daily lives. He preached acts of justice giving all a fair share of food and clothing and treating all people with respect.. John also preached mercy forgiving others, welcoming them, expecting forgiveness from God. In the catechism lessons for the children this week, John the Baptist is an example for them to be good to other people by being kind, generous, and fair. The children will also look to us for examples of doing loving, caring actions. Understanding will follow the habits we instill in them. We are made in God s image, and share the Trinity s communal social nature. We are called to reach out and to build relationships of love and justice. December 21: Saint Peter Canisius Born in 1521, four years after martin Luther wrote his 95 Theses, St. Peter Canisius worked to reform the Church during the counter-reformation and was part of the Council of Trent. A Doctor of the Church, he wrote catechisms to share the faith with children.

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK This Gaudete Sunday calls us to rejoice because the Lord is near. Does your heart rejoice and sing, or are the pressures and burdens of life weighing you down? We can easily become overwhelmed. The weaknesses and sins of life, indeed our own weakness and sin, eat away at the joy and hope God wants us to know. Those who are grounded in their faith and possess deep spiritual lives know that God is near. Realizing this puts life into perspective. We really want to be free from our burdens but do not always know how to achieve this. We keep stumbling and falling. Advent is a time when we can learn to "do life differently," just like John the Baptist instructed the crowds. Joy and hope are the gifts God offers, not anxiety and despair. Rejoice in the Lord Always The Third Sunday of Advent is a bit different than the others. While violet has been the color we are used to the past few weeks, this week the candle and the vestments are a rose color. These changes signify an increased joy in our hearts on this Sunday which we call Gaudete, which means rejoice! Our joy is increased because we know that our Savior is near, Emmanuel, God is with us. And, yet, a bit of anxiety may also creep in. We may be asking ourselves, are we ready? What must we still do? This is what those in today s Gospel were asking John the Baptist. His response? Be generous. Be honest. Don t cheat others. As Christmas draws ever nearer, there may be lots of things that distract us from what the Lord truly desires of us this time of year. God wants us to rejoice today, and all days, in freedom of heart so that we may share our gifts and proclaim the good news of God dwelling among us and in us. These lessons can also serve us well as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! and recognize God at work in the hearts of sisters and brothers in faith. Rejoice! The Lord is near! Let the peace of God guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
