Simon got a new name after his profession of faith. As soon as he declared to Jesus, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," Jesus renamed him with a title that means "rock." And with that name he gave Peter the mission to be a solid foundation upon which he would build his church. Not Peter's church. Not James or Paul's church. Not Martin Luther's or John Calvin's or anybody else's. This is Jesus' church, the church of Christ himself, that we call the Catholic Church. So it was Christ himself who desired to give authority in the church -"the keys to the kingdom of heaven" - to a human leader. Peter was thus established as the first pope. He exercised a special kind of headship, within the community of the apostles and the church at large, because Jesus gave him the power to do so, not because Peter claimed it for himself. And so too every pope since, right down to our Holy Father today, exercises this unique leadership within the Church. What a gift this is to us! Jesus knew well the human tendency to squabble and disagree, to argue and compete. He knew that the church would be prone to all of this because of her members, and that providing a final voice of authority, saying in effect that "the buck stops here" would be helpful for maintaining unity. As Catholics, even in spite of the differing opinions and perspectives that are manifest in the Church, we nonetheless maintain a strong sense of identity and belief thanks in large part to the papacy. Today, may we give thanks for the pope and pray for him as he strives to lead all of us closer and closer to Christ. Prayer for Pope Francis Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to Your shepherd, Pope Francis, a spirit of courage and right judgement, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care may he, as successor to the apostle Peter and vicar of Christ, build Your church into a sacrament of unity, love, and peace for all the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Please note: If you have not filled out a registration form, we may not have a record of you. Consequently, when you want to be married, have your child baptized or are in need of a sponsor letter, we will not know if you are a registered member. Register online at or by stopping at the parish office. Also, please let us know if you are moving out of the parish so we can update our records. ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! You Are the Christ - are you prepared, like Saint Peter, to profess with your lips that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God? How about to profess it with your life, by the quality of your words and deed? Are you willing to place your trust in Jesus in the midst of trials, or is it only for when things are going well? We are all called to set our lives firmly on the foundation of Jesus so to stand firm and share his life with others no matter the circumstances of our lives. Summer Sessions and continue to prepare your heart to share the life and love of God with others even as we await the big changes that are about to take place in our parish and throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The uncertainty may challenge us, but we trust in the work of the Holy Spirit to provide the gifts and resources for the Church to grow and thrive. Visit to learn more and to stay informed. SEPTEMBER 17 - OPENING SCHOOL YEAR MASS for Total Catholic Education - 10:30 MASS. This includes all students and families involved in Faith Formation, those who attend Holy Sepulcher School, Catechists, Teachers and those who continue their formation in faith through adult education opportunities. A FAMILY PICNIC will follow the 10:30 Mass on September 17. Giving Tree Meeting The Giving Tree is held every December in order to purchase Christmas gifts for the elderly, children, the homebound and the hospitalized. A tailgate / football party is also held annual at Colonial Gardens, an assisted living center. A Giving Tree planning meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 5 at 6:00 pm (note time change) in the John Paul II Room. Son of God, Son of Man, Messiah, Lord, and the Christ are some that immediately come to mind. But, who do YOU say that Jesus is? Who we need or want Jesus to be becomes the key to unlocking a relationship with God. For some, Jesus is just a prophet, a wise man, or an inspirational figure in history. These labels keep Jesus in the past and prevent us from really having a living, vibrant relationship with him. MEN S AND WOMEN S FELLOWSHIP GROUPS CATHOLIC MEN S FELLOWSHIP The next Catholic Men s Fellowship (CMF) meeting will be on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 pm, in the John Paul II room. The group will be doing a DVD study program. A Biblical Walk Through The Mass by Dr. Edward Sri. Dr. Sri explores the biblical roots of the words and gestures we experience at Mass and explains their profound significance. In this study, you come to know and understand the Mass like never before, leading you to a richer,more fruitful worship experience. All men are welcome. CATHOLIC WOMEN S FELLOWSHIP The Catholic Women s Fellowship Group uses prayer, Scripture, reflection, and faith-sharing to spread the Good News of Jesus. Their intention and prayer is for a deeper relationship with Jesus. As we grow in our love for Him, our branches will grow for the Glory of God! I am the Vine and you are the branches (John 15:5). The Catholic Women s Fellowship gathers to join hearts and minds to bring our faith alive in fellowship! The Catholic Women s Fellowship Group will meet this Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7:00 pm in the Early Childhood Development Center s Conference Room. Bazaar Wrap-up Meeting A Bazaar Wrap Up Meeting will be on Monday, Aug. 28 at 7:00 pm in the John Paul II Room. All chairpersons are encouraged to attend. AROUND THE COMMUNITY St. Matthias Rummage Sale St. Gregory Parish/St. Matthias Church: St. Matthias Annual Rummage Sale will be held on Sept. 14, 15 and 16 from 8:00 a.m. 5:00 pm each day in the church s Upper Hall which is located behind the church. The address is 417 E. Main Street, Evans City. Rummage items will be accepted prior to start of the sale. Items accepted will be dishes (clean), household items, tools, sports equipment, jewelry, clothing (children & adults), shoes, baby equipment and small furniture. Bishop s Education Fund Catholic schools are one of the best ways through which the Church brings young people into a relationship with Jesus and prepares them for life. Our schools provide: Spiritual formation that encourages virtue Gospel values that promote respect, compassion and service Academic excellence leading to success in higher education The Bishop s Education Fund (BEF) provides tuition assistance for Catholic families who qualify; yet this support covers less than half the demonstrated need, which continues to grow. Due to this pressing need, Bishop Zubik has directed that every dollar raised from this fall s BEF Appeal on September 9-10 be used for direct student aid. Thank you in advance for supporting Catholic education through the BEF appeal. Labor Day Event Patriotic Rosary The ChristLife Spirit Refill Team of St. Teresa of Avila Parish is sponsoring a Patriotic Rosary on Monday, September 4th in the Church after the 9:00 am Mass. This is a unique opportunity to pray the rosary for the Consecration of Our Nation, and includes a patriotic song and reading for each mystery, prayers for all levels of our government, and a Hail Mary prayed for each of the 50 states. All parishioners, family, friends & neighbors are invited to attend. Please pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of Corey Kleinfelder who recently passed away and is enjoying everlasting life.
