His words are not addressed to a select few, the professional religious people, but to all who would follow him. He calls for radical renunciations. We must prefer nothing to the love of Christ, not even the strongest bonds of affection. To be his disciples, we must take up our cross and renounce everything. Is this reasonable? We have become so reasonable that most of the time we no longer show any of that gospel audacity which marks the authentic disciple of Jesus. In a world where the conditions of life are dominated by the idols of materialism, Jesus call demands heroic response. We are led to rediscover, in the gospel, the high cost of grace. In the invitation to radical detachment, the issue is attachment to a person, Jesus. We become what we love. If we love money, we will become money. If we love Christ, we will become children of God. Eucharistic Adoration Day On Wednesday, September 7, we will have our monthly Eucharistic Adoration Day. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed from 9:00 am - 6:45 pm. This is a great opportunity for us to spend some personal time with Our Lord during this special day. Sometimes the burdens of our lives can be so demanding, that the Lord asks us to let Him help us carry them. On Mission for the Church Alive!, our diocesan-wide planning initiative, won t fully succeed without everyone s input. Draft proposals of new models of ministry will be presented, taking into account our parish membership, Mass attendance, sacramental participation, services, finances and much more. This is your chance to get the facts and help shape the future. Here at Holy Sepulcher Parish, consultation sessions will be held on Monday, Oct. 10 and Monday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 pm. CLERGY CONVOCATION Every three years, the priests of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, with Bishop Zubik, attend their Pastoral Convocation. Beginning Monday, September 19 and concluding Thursday, September 22 nd, all priests will be at the Oglebay Resort & Conference Center in Wheeling, West Virginia. This is an opportunity for spiritual renewal, pastoral and professional development, and priestly fraternity. Look for details in coming bulletins on how necessary pastoral services will be provided during the time Fr. Bob will be away from the parish. Your prayers for the success of this gathering are very important. Please note: There will be no Masses scheduled on Tuesday, September 20 at 7:30AM, Wednesday, September 21 at 7:00PM, and Thursday, September 22 at 7:30AM. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE The fall campaign for 40 Days for Life is scheduled for Sept Nov. 6; Holy Sepulcher s day is Friday, Sept. 30 from 11:00 am - 3:30 pm. We are looking for volunteers to join us in this peaceful, prayerful vigil outside of the Planned Parenthood abortion facility on Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA. We ask only that you hold a sign (Pray to End Abortion) and pray with us. This 40 Day Vigil is held in all 50 states, at the same time, twice a year; since the campaign began praying in front of abortion facilities, 75 abortion clinics have been closed! Countless babies have been saved from abortion, when their mothers saw us praying and turned around - including one young mother from Butler who turned around last spring and is about to deliver her twin boys! EIGHTIETH INTERNATIONAL EUCHARISTIC ROSARY MARCH The Eightieth International Eucharistic Rosary March will be on October 2 at 184 Washington Place, Pittsburgh, PA. David Rombold at Epiphany Church Following the Liturgy of the Word there will be a Eucharistic Procession through the City of Pittsburgh with the Most Blessed Sacrament and statue of Our lady of Fatima returning to Epiphany Church for Benediction, Crowning of Our Lady and for those who choose to stay, a special Blessing for Healing. The Holy Sepulcher Knights of Columbus have decided to cook a few soon! The proceeds of these dinners will go toward the Holy Sepulcher School Tuition Assistance Fund. Please mark your calendars. The first dinner is this Friday, Sept. 9 and the second one is on Friday, Oct. 7, both from 4:30-7:00 pm. Take out is available, especially for those of you heading to high school football games! All dinners will be at the Holy Sepulcher School Cafeteria. The cost is $9.50 / adults and $7.00 / children and includes 2 sides, a drink, and dessert. USED LAPTOP COLLECTION Thanks for supporting the Patzun Mission. Used laptop collection begins Aug 22. We are again amazed by the generosity of our parishioners. Many people indicated they want to donate their used laptops for the new Software Development Program. Beginning August 22, please leave your laptop with the power cord in the Parish Office. We ask that you DO NOT leave laptops in the Coat Room; we prefer they are in a secure location. Many thanks to everyone for continuing to support the Mission. ANNUAL SOCIABLES PICNIC The Sociables will have their annual picnic on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1:30 pm. We are looking forward to having you join us! The Sociables is open to anyone over 50 years old. PLEASE BRING a Halloween treat to send to the residents of Colonial Gardens (pudding packs, Jell-o cups, packaged crackers or cookies, etc.) We will be explaining our Holiday Package fundraiser and distributing tickets to the members. Sister Anna Marie Gaglia, CSJ, Principal school@holysepulcher.org From the Desk of Sister Anna Maria Gaglia This summer a parishioner was in Saxonburg where two children from Holy Sepulcher School, ages 6 and 7, were selling lemonade. The proceeds of the lemonade stand were going in St. Vincent de Paul s Poor Box located in the back of the sanctuary. The parishioner, who bought lemonade, sent me this note: Please remember to send a letter to the two little ones I met this summer from Holy Sepulcher School who told me that all the proceeds from their lemonade stand were going to the poor box in the Church. I am a very strong believer in nurturing the minds and hearts of young people. If we can guide them and praise them for their love of other humans at this young age, then we as adults will have done our duty to GOD. I loved this message because this is the heart and soul of Catholic Education. We provide an excellent education, our teachers are state and diocesan certified and the student teacher ratio is 12:1. Last year our graduates were valedictorians and were accepted at some of the best colleges in the nation. Yet, the value that we treasure the most and work the hardest to fulfill is that of preparing young students to live a life that is full of faith and love and to nurture all their talents and desires to live in a peaceful world, to guide them and praise them their love and respect of others. As we begin this year, thank you for all your support. Thank you for your financial support and, most especially, for your prayerful support and love. This includes children, parents, families who participate in Catholic Education, as well as teachers, catechists and adults learning about deepening their life in Christ. The RCIA classes provide an overview of the beauty of the Catholic Faith allowing participants to ask questions, engage in discussion all in the context of walking with others in the parish on their faith journey. If you have questions, please contact the Faith Formation Office at SAINT TERESA OF CALCUTTA Today, September 4, Mother Teresa is going to be canonized a saint in the Catholic Church. She died only 19 years ago and the world can t wait to hear her proclaimed a saint! I have reflected on why I love Mother Teresa so much. Of course there are the very obvious reasons: her selfless, wholehearted service to the poorest of the poor, her courage to follow Jesus no matter the cost, her simplicity and her love - for Jesus and for humanity. But when I dig deeper, I realize there is more that inspires me (and millions of others around the world). Mother Teresa, like some of my other favorite saints, makes holiness seem possible and exciting! When I read her reflections and stories about working with the poor, she reminds me over and over again, that we are all called to holiness - right now, today. Everything she did was for love of Jesus and love of the soul she encountered. Mother Teresa shows us that, through God s grace, our minds, hearts and actions can be driven by this holy fire of love: Do small things with great love. What you are doing I cannot do, what I m doing, you cannot do, but together we are doing something beautiful for God, and this is the greatness of God s love for us - To give us the opportunity to become holy through the works of love that we do, because holiness is not just the luxury of the few. Find your own Calcutta. Find the sick, the suffering, and the lonely right there where you are in your own homes and in your own families, in your workplaces and in your schools Everywhere, wherever you go, you find people who are unwanted, unloved, uncared for, just rejected by society completely forgotten, completely left alone. Holy Sepulcher Life Teen, a Eucharistic-centered Catholic youth ministry, is committed to empowering the youth of our parish to live as disciples of Jesus Christ daily, encouraging the youth to fully participate in the life of the church and caring for the total well-being of all the teens entrusted to our care. Bishop David A. Zubik will lead the prayer service at 11:00 a.m. The service which should last approximately 30 minutes. The local event is in conjunction with the United States Conference of Catholic bishops (USCCB) and Catholic Charities USA, who established Sept 9 th as a Day for Peace and Prayer.
