This is not a pretty picture. Jesus shares a parable in today's Gospel that reminds us of a truth we would rather forget: evil is real, and the devil is at work. The bountiful harvest of our faith is something that Satan wants to destroy. And he has a host of diabolical tactics to help him carry out his wicked plans. But there is one strategy in particular that we must be on guard against. As the French poet Charles Baudelaire put it, "The devil's finest trick is to persuade you that he does not exist." Sneaky as it may be, this approach is effective! And, unfortunately, the attitude of our modern era is very conducive to buying the lie. Too often we dismiss the idea of the invisible spiritual reality of angels and demons. It doesn't seem "scientific" enough for us because it can't be seen or "proven." But neither can our faith! We believe in a host of invisible realities starting with God himself. We should not be fooled into thinking that the devil is a make-believe cartoon character with red horns and a pitchfork on his shoulder. Alas, no. As the "Catechism of the Catholic Church" reminds us, "Scripture witnesses to the disastrous influence of the one Jesus calls 'a murderer from the beginning'" (CCC 394) and, as we read in the Bible, "Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the Devil" (1 Jn 3:8). This is not pretend, and so it must be taken seriously. But so too, the reality of Satan must be situated within the broader context of God's supreme power. The devil "cannot prevent the building up of God's reign" (CCC 395). The influence of evil can never defeat the power of our faith, unless we let it do so. The word of God is a light to the mind and a fire to the will. -St. Lawrence of Brindisi

3 JULY 23, 2017 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA) Is there someone in your family, among your friends or neighbors, who might be interested in joining our Catholic family, especially someone who is not an active member of any religious denomination? Beginning this fall, on one evening of each week, a series of classes in our Catholic Faith will be offered here at Holy Sepulcher Parish. This is a beautiful opportunity to gradually become aware of the entire process of introducing new members to our church; it is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). It is a very ancient Rite, recently restored in the life of the church. The Rite involves the entire parish welcoming the converts through individual sponsors from the parish community, who introduce the converts to parish activities. As one begins the process of Christian Initiation, no commitment is required, other than to see if the Catholic way is the way for a person to find Christ in his or her life. The classes continue until the end of Lent, Those who go through the program and want to become Catholic are baptized; if they are already baptized, they will make their profession of faith. Baptism takes place at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. In the early Church, this was the time for new members to be received into the church. To help the Candidates, sponsors are needed from our parish. We all have a beautiful gift from our Father: Our Faith! Let s share it! To pre-register or just to inquire, please call the Faith Formation Office at The Holy Sepulcher Chapter of the Knights of Columbus has been serving the parish since As most of us know, the Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. Nationally and locally the Knights provide annual charitable services, promoting Catholic education, evangelization and parish-wide events. Over the years, the Local Holy Sepulcher Chapter has provided financial support for many parish organizations including the Parish School. They share the mission of the school which is to provide a Catholic education committed to the highest standards of faith formation and academic excellence. The Preschool Program has been growing over the past few years and needed extra space. Sr. Anna Marie and I asked the Knights if they would consider allowing the Pre-School to use the space that has been dedicated as the Knights meeting space which was built by the Knights. The Knights voted to allow the Pre-School Program to use the room starting in September. On behalf of the School and Parish, Sr. Anna Marie and I want to express our deepest gratitude to the Knights for their continued generosity and commitment to their mission here at Holy Sepulcher by providing this space for the growth of the Preschool Program. According to the National Conference of Bishops Parishes are where the Church lives. Parishes are communities of faith, of action, and of hope. They are where the Gospel is proclaimed and celebrated, where believers are formed they are the heart of the Church. Mother Seton Marian Pilgrimage Holy Sepulcher is sponsoring a one day Spiritual Journey to the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, MD on Thursday, August 17. The cost is $ / person and will be a guided tour of the shrine. Mass will follow the tour. After a wonderful lunch at the Carriage House Restaurant, the tour will continue to the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes. A dinner stop will be made enroute. The tour bus will depart from Holy Sepulcher at 6:00 am and will return at approximately 8:30 pm. Reservations and payments can be dropped off in the collection basket or at the parish office. ADOPT A STUDENT WITH TUITION DONATIONS Each year, there are qualified students whose families cannot afford tuition. To meet this need, Holy Sepulcher School has developed an opportunity to Adopt a Student by making a donation to help sponsor a student with tuition. This society, although it operates apart from the parish, works in conjunction with the diocese to assist the poor & needy in southern Butler County. 7 PAGE 7 AUGUST 13, 2017 BAZAAR NEWS CHINESE BASKET AUCTION If you are looking for ideas for donations there are new Bees on the wall and a list of baskets on the table in the Narthex. All item and basket donations can be left in the coat room. Gift cards, gift certificates and monetary donations can be dropped off at the office or placed in the collection basket at Mass. Please mark any donations with Chinese Auction. In addition to items, basket donations, gift cards, etc., we are also asking parishioners who may have a business that offers a service to make a donation for that service in the form of a gift certificate (house cleaning, lawn service, clean-up, car detailing, massage therapy, house painting, personal trainer, etc.). Your donations are what help to make the Chinese Auction the success that it is. Thank you in advance for your support. Reminder: deadline for all donations (including baskets) is July 30. Individual items submitted after July 30, will go into a mystery basket. After July 30, completed baskets donated must be wrapped and ready to display! VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED AT THE BAZAAR: SIGN UP SHEETS LOCATED IN THE NARTHEX Many volunteers are still needed to assist at our annual church bazaar as it takes hundreds of volunteers to make the Bazaar run successfully. Help is needed before, during and after the Bazaar. All positions need no prior training and are easy to do. We have spots for kids and adults, walking and sitting, indoors or outside. You will be surprised at how much fun and enjoyment you can have with your fellow parishioners and our bazaar guests. Don t miss out! Sign up sheets are available in the Narthex. Please keep in mind that you will need to obtain your Volunteer Clearances, as mandated by the Diocese of Pittsburgh, by going to the church website ( and click on the ministries tab or call Joanne at if you have any questions. Bottled Water Cubes / Cases of Soda Pop (used for the Life Teen Snack Shack) 2 Liter Bottles of Soda (used for the EDGE Ring Toss). A total of 150 two liter soda bottles are needed. Remember: All donations are welcome, but kids love the fun and wild flavors! New or Gently Used Stuffed Animals (used for Kid s World) All donations can be left in the coat room marked Bazaar. HELP DISTRIBUTE BAZAAR POSTERS The Bazaar committee needs help distributing poster to help advertise our annual Bazaar. The posters are typically placed in businesses or prominent areas that see a good amount of foot traffic, located in the surrounding areas. If you know of any good locations that may be willing to display a poster, please take a poster or two. Posters are in the Narthex. FLEA MARKET DROP OFF TIMES Any items for the flea market can be dropped off in the field behind the church on the following days: Wednesday, August 9: 8:00 am - 8:00 pm Thursday, August 10: 8:00 am - 8:00 pm Friday, August 11: 8:00 am - 8:00 pm Saturday, August 12: 8:00 am - 12:00 Noon Please note, we cannot accept any items prior to these dates. All gently used items are welcome except clothing, tires, chemicals, paint, upholstered furniture, large exercise equipment, magazines, VHS tapes, and car seats. NOTE: The drop off location is in a new location. The new drop off location is beside the church on East Cruikshank Road beyond the rectory Follow the drop off signs. We are preparing our line-up of entertainers so that it may be published prior to the bazaar. BAZAAR RAFFLE TICKETS A book of Bazaar Raffle Tickets was mailed to each parish family. The tickets are $2.00 / each or $30.00 / book. Additional books of tickets are available at the parish office and in the narthex.
