This verse is part of a beautiful reflection on childlike faith. We're reminded of the innocence of children, how eager they are to experience life and how quick they are to trust. Rarely do we hear it with the story that immediately proceeds it. The Pharisees question Jesus on the lawfulness of divorce! Hardly the sort of thorny moral conversation one typically has in front of children. Yet here we are. Jesus' response goes further back then the Mosaic law. "From the beginning, God made them male and female? the two shall become one flesh what God has joined together, no human being must separate." Jesus cites a particular set of passages from Genesis 1 and 2, before the Fall in Genesis 3. Adam and Eve possessed original innocence. How eager they were to encounter one another and to explore the garden! How immediate their initial trust in God. We no longer live in Eden. As we age in our fallen world, our childlike trust is wounded and betrayed. We become hardened to the beauties of life. We're quick to find a way around difficult moments. In brief, things become complicated as we lose our innocence. The teachings of Christ and the Church on sexuality become more challenging or more objectionable. Jesus recognizes this in today's Gospel. His invitation is not to compromise with our broken reality. It is a return to beauty, to the fullness of life as it was meant to be. We can affirm our trust in God. We can view life with gratitude. We can experience healing of our lost innocence. This is possible today -- now! -- by grace. Indeed, "the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." SO WHAT IS COMING ON OCTOBER 15th? As you know, the implementation of the On Mission Initiative begins on Monday, October 15, 2018 Much of this involves what are termed Groupings. All the parishes of the Diocese have been placed into 57 Groupings. Our Parish Grouping is Adams/Cranberry/ Glade Mills. This is important for several reasons, one of which is that all clergy are assigned to each parish in the grouping. Therefore, on Monday, October 15, 2018, our grouping will have three priests assigned to it:father Charles Bober, Father Charles Baptiste and Father Kenneth Marlovits. The clergy also includes four deacons: Deacon Ralph Bachner, Deacon William Carver, Deacon Robert Marshall and Deacon David Miller. These priests and deacons are assigned to and will minister in both parishes of the grouping beginning on October 15th.

3 PAGE 3 On Wednesday, October 10, we will have our monthly Eucharistic Adoration Day. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed from 9:00am - 6:45 pm. This is a great opportunity for us to spend some personal time with Our Lord during this special day. Sometimes the burdens of our lives can be so Jesus wants us all to come to Him in the Blessed Sacrament. He is there in person, just waiting for you. Nowhere on Earth are you more welcome, nowhere on Earth are you more loved, than by Jesus truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. - Mother Theresa demanding that the Lord asks us to let Him help us carry them. Dave October is Respect Life Month Each October the Church asks us to reflect upon our commitment to promot respect for the dignity of all human life, from its first moments in the womb until its natural death. The Church s passion for the life issues stems from her foundational belief that every human life is created in God s image and likeness and that God sees His divine image in every life He creates. Thus, God is insulted and offended when His image is defaced by any crime that degrades, diminishes or destroys human life. Cardinal Sean O Malley of Boston, writing on behalf of the Bishops of the United States, expresses this truth beautifully:our worth is based not on our skills or levels of productivity. Rather, we discover our worth when we discover our true identity found in the unchangeable, permanent fact that we are created in God s image and likeness and called to an eternal destiny with Him. Because of this, nothing can diminish our God-given dignity, and therefore, nothing can diminish the immeasurable worth of our lives. Others may fail to respect that dignity - but in doing so only distances themselves from God s loving embrace. During this coming month, may we all ask ourselves how well we uphold, promote and defend the dignity of every life and whether or not we share the Church s godly view of the dignity of all human life. Further, we are all encouraged to pray and work for the success of pro-life efforts. MASS ATTENDANCE COUNTS Each October, parishes have been asked to compile their attendance data for the weekend Masses. The purpose of the October Count, which began in 1987, has been to track Saturday/Sunday Mass attendance trends throughout the diocese. This year the diocese has requested that we extend the October Count through January DAYS FOR LIFE Have you signed up for 40 Days for Life yet? We are still in need of volunteers to stand and pray at the Planned Parenthood abortion facility on Liberty Ave., Pgh -to demonstrate your Respect for Life and to pray for mothers who are considering having an abortion. We are the last sign of hope to a pregnant woman entering the abortion office and the first sign of mercy for those women who are leaving. Our scheduled time is Friday, Oct. 12 th from 11am -3pm; we usually do 2 hour shifts and car-pooling is available. Volunteers will need to have the following clearances: Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History Certification and PA Child Abuse History Certification from Dept of Human Services. Please note as a volunteer, there is NO cost to you for state clearances and if you volunteered last year your clearances are still good. ROSARY CONGRESS COMMITTEE A Rosary Congress is being held at St. Michael the Archangel Church on Center Ave. in Butler, starting Wednesday, October 10th at 6:00 pm through Thursday, October 11th at 6:00 pm to pray for the end of abortion, to sanctify families, reparation for sin, conversion of America, & world peace. Ministry groups & individuals are encouraged to sign up for a Holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament during that time. The Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy and fatima prayers will be said each hour followed by silent meditation. Call Linda Spohn or Pat Nocera to sign up. ANOINTING OF THE SICK MASS A mass and celebration of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be held at St. Joseph Church in Cabot on Saturday, October 13, at 10:00 am. Those eligible to receive the sacrament include Persons anticipating surgery for a serious illness, Elderly who are notably weakened, Anyone suffering from a debilitating condition or mental/ emotional pressure, and Children are eligible if they have sufficient use of reason to be strengthened by the sacrament. Family members are invited to attend. He Is Not Ashamed To Call Them Brothers This Sunday s second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews, in reminding us how God humbled himself by choosing to become one like us in Jesus Christ, also highlights for us that Christ chooses to call us his sisters and brothers. Through his creating us in his image and likeness and consecrating us with his Spirit in baptism, God the Father adopts us as his beloved children and unites us with each other through his Son, Jesus. If Christ Jesus considers us his sisters and brothers and is willing to sacrifice for us, then we, who strive to love with the heartof Jesus, should do the same. As the new parish groupings take effect and the interim Mass schedules begin as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative on October 15 th, we will likely encounter new sisters and brothers in Christ. May the love of God at work in us be extended to them in our words and deeds, and may we receive the love of God from them as we seek each day to build up his kingdom. Together we read the story 10 Apples Up on Top and practiced balancing apples on our heads and fingers. After practicing their balancing skills, the students worked as individuals and in groups on an apple STEM project. The students used cut up apples and toothpicks to create a standing structure. It is always amazing to see how creative and unique each creation was. It reminds us of how truly special God created each and everyone of us. The students had a wonderful time working together as a school family. The students will be walking/running with other Holy Sepulcher students and teachers to help raise funds for Holy Sepulcher Catholic School.
