2 Father John s forum Fourth Sunday in Lent I Was Blind Before, Now I See The Gospel (John 9:1-41) today is about two cures and one tragedy. First, there is the healing of the blind man s eyes. Through Jesus touch, the man is now able to see but that is just the start. Slowly the man comes to recognize Jesus as a prophet and then finally as Lord. The man moves from sight to insight. That s the second cure. The very opposite happens with the Pharisees. They were born with vision but refused to believe. They were born with vision but refused to believe. They were spiritually blind. The cured man accepts Christ. They reject Him. That s the tragedy. It s like two trains speeding past each other in opposite directions. As quickly as he moves toward faith in Jesus as Lord and into the light, they move just as fast into hostility toward the Lord and into darkness. As he comes out of a dark tunnel, they enter it. Both the Pharisees and the cured man looked at Jesus of Nazareth. They saw an opponent. He saw a Savior. In Baptism, we were given the capacity to see the Christ-centered meaning of events of our life. It is called the gift of faith. We have to care for and grow in that faith. Lent should help us do that. Let s use this second half of Lent to deepen our gift of our Catholic faith through prayer, to learn about it through study, to display it in our relationships with others, to strengthen it by gathering with the Church on Sunday so we can proclaim it at Easter and live it the rest of the year. Joseph, Captured Fire, Alba House, 2005) Welcome Deacon Jim Mickens On March 14, Bishop Zubik assigned Deacon Jim Mickens to Holy Sepulcher Parish to assist in the ministry of sacrament and the ministry of word. Deacon Jim will work in conjunction with Deacon David Miller as we minister to the faithful of this parish. I am happy to share his words of introduction with you: My name is James Mickens, but I go by the name Deacon Jim. I was born in Hollywood, California in In 1963, I moved to Arizona and lived there for nearly 49 years. Originally, I was raised as a Jehovah s Witness, but I could no longer believe as they did, therefore, in 1987, I resigned my position as an Elder and departed their church. In 1992, I began to explore Catholicism and a year later I joined the RCIA. I was baptized a Catholic in I married my wife, Janice, in October 1995, and I was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Phoenix in Throughout my ministry, I became the Director of Religious Education, which gave me the opportunity to work with the RCIA, infant baptism, Youth Ministry (Edge/Life Teen), Bible study, and a host of other things. I spent time working with our Catholic school, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Knights of Columbus, of which I am a Forth Degree member. In the last few years, I have developed a disability known as Progressive Genetic Spinocerebellar Ataxia. It attacks the cerebellum and the main brainstem. It affects me in five major areas: my balance, motor functions, speech, swallowing and eyesight, but my thoughts and who I am as a person stays the same. There are numerous side effects as well, but I am determined to serve the best I can for as long as I can. Janice and I were alone in Arizona, so we moved to Pittsburgh in order to be closer to her family and her hometown. We bought a townhouse in Sarver and have enjoyed the change of seasons and cooler environment of Pennsylvania. We have enjoyed getting to know all of you at Holy Sepulcher and we hope you will introduce yourselves to us, young and old alike. On behalf of our parish, I warmly welcome Deacon Jim and Janice! Deacon Jim will work with our Adult Faith Formation Program from time to time as well as begin a much-needed phone ministry for our homebound parishioners. We are blessed to have you as a part of our family of faith. We wish continued blessings! Amen. Lenten Speaker Series Our Lenten Speaker Series continues this Wednesday, April 2 during our 7:00pm Mass. Weston is the son of Derek and Katelyn Happ Women s Healthy Lifestyle Group: IN SHAPE! The Women s Healthy Lifestyle Group has a new name: IN SHAPE! Topics for a Spiritually Healthy Attitude and Physical and Emotional Enrichment. This group has been meeting since January and would like to extend the program to all women of the parish. In Shape! meeting days are on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Day Chapel; weather permitting, the group meets outside the church at 6:30 p.m. for a light walk around the parish grounds. In Shape! will also host special speaker evenings with topics of interest to ALL parishioners regarding healthy lifestyle topics. The first speaker event will be on Tuesday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. presented by parishioner, Art King of King/Harvest Valley Farms. The topic of interest will be Local fruits and vegetables: the KEY to good health. ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS Help parents send their children to our quality Catholic school. You can divert your state taxes to needy families for tuition assistance. Go to and register with the Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED). Click on single application. Apply as a for profit entity. Once you submit, a new application will come up for EITC or OSTC. Currently there is $20,000, available for OSTC. JUNIOR CANTOR MINISTRY: A Junior Cantor Ministry is now forming due to the many youth wanting to actively participate in the weekend liturgies by singing. Requirements: must be in the 4th grade or up, able to read, have a pleasant singing voice and be a member of Holy Sepulcher Parish. INSTRUMENTALISTS FOR TENEBRAE ON GOOD FRIDAY Violin, flute and oboe musicians are needed for the Tenebrae Service on Good Friday (April 18) at 7:00 p.m. Music will be provided. Practices will be on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. beginning on Tuesday, April 1. INSTRUMENTALISTS FOR HOLY WEEK Instrumentalists (flutes, trumpet, violin, etc.) are needed to play for Palm Sunday through Easter. Music will be provided only if the music director is contacted.

THE PASSION OF CHRIST *Next Sunday, April 6, Life Teen will be viewing The Passion of Christ. The Life Night will begin at 6:00 p.m., which is earlier than the normal start time. Because the movie is rated R, parental consent is required for any teen to watch the movie. Men and Women Retreats: COME AND SEE The Catholic Men s Fellowship of Pittsburgh is hosting the 9th annual Gathering of Catholic Men Sat., April 12 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the AJ Paulmbo Center on Duquesne Campus, 600 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA. The day begins with a Holy Hour and includes a host of great speakers offering insight on how to live our faith more deeply and richly as Catholic men in today s society. There are also opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, even for those who may have been away from the church for awhile. The day concludes with a 3:00 p.m. Mass with Bishop Zubik.
