At least, that's what Jesus shows us in today's Gospel as a leper approaches him for healing. Until the nineteenth century, lepers were shunned to the margins of society for fear of spreading the disease. To touch a leper was to risk becoming unclean yourself. In today's Gospel, Jesus defies convention. "Moved with pity, he reached out his hand, [and] touched him." The leper is healed! But this is not the only risk Jesus takes. Before Jesus heals the man, he knows full well the desperate nature of his situation. Jesus knows that this man will be overjoyed upon being healed and that he just might tell everyone he knows. For a Messiah looking to temporarily fly under the radar, healing this particular leper might not be the best idea. Jesus heals anyway. It can be easy to become calculated in our giving. If I go out of my way to help this person, how will it affect my reputation? How will this charitable donation affect my budget? How could I possibly make time to volunteer regularly? In today's Gospel, Jesus casts these concerns aside. He touches the untouchable. He reaches the unreachable. For his efforts, he receives a betrayal of his request for silence. "The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter." Before long "it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly." Jesus is forced to remain "outside in the deserted places." It would appear, perhaps, that he is unable to accomplish his mission. When we take a risk to be generous, things might not follow the prescribed path. We might be disappointed. We also might be surprised! Our witness to radical generosity is attractive to a world in desperate need. Indeed, when Jesus took risks for love, "People kept coming to him from everywhere."

3 FEBRUARY 11, 2018 SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3 LENTEN REGULATIONS Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness. (Joel 2:12-13) Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent is less than two weeks away This beautiful season calls each one of us to true conversion. The penitential season of Lent calls all of us to acts of repentance through prayer, fasting and alms giving. Since Lent retains its ancient penitential character, the faithful should be reminded to make the entire Lenten season a period of special observance through the three practices of prayer, fasting and alms giving. 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. 2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of No one should consider this obligation lightly. 3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obligated to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. 4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. 5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. 6. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation. Ash Wednesday Reflection The key word for the day is turn. The prophet Joel cries out the words of the Lord: Even now, return to me with your whole heart. This turning manifests itself in outward signs: fasting, almsgiving, prayer. But the essential turning is inward. Rend your hearts, not your garments. Those who fast and pray and give alms in order to be seen turn not to the Lord but to human acclaim and approval. The reward they seek is the reward they receive. But those who turn to God without seeking approval even from themselves, who give without letting the left hand see the right, allow God to measure the recompense. Your Father who sees in secret will repay you (Matt. C:4; cf. 6:6,18). The mystery is this: integrity cannot be bought. It is a gift. Turn to him, Joel says, and perhaps he will turn to you and leave behind him a blessing (cf. Joel 2:14). Human turning in selflessness hopes to meet God s free turning in blessing. For it is characteristic of God to relent, to turn. Jonah knew this and fled from his commission to preach repentance to the hated Ninevites. Is this not what I said? I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, rich in clemency, loathe to punish (cf. Jonah 4:2). However, the turning of God is always a surprise, always out of proportion to the gift of the rent heart. His people turn in fasting and prayer; he turns with the gift of life. At the climax of his turning, God made him who did not know sin to be sin that he might turn us to be the very holiness of God. He turned to take our nature that we, who did not know righteousness, might live by his life. We are a new creation, reconciled to God through Christ. Now the ministry of that gift has been entrusted to us. We are ambassadors for Christ, ambassadors of reconciliation. Our theme this year is We Are The Church Alive! The message to share is one of discipleship. By learning Jesus, loving Jesus, and living Jesus we become his disciples, and we help to make other disciples for Jesus. We are on a mission to bring God s love to everyone. Each parish is given a goal, a commitment to meet. The assessment for Holy Sepulcher Parish is $99, The people of God of Holy Sepulcher are encouraged to give $300.00, per family. This is the same amount we asked for last year. We ask you to use the pledge system of $30.00 down and $30.00 / month, for nine months. You may wish to pay the full amount of $ immediately or each month, you will receive a reminder in the mail from Our Sunday Visitor Envelope Service, marked Parish Share. This is the suggested method of payment. For those of you who find these suggested amounts to be too high, I ask you to give what you can afford without hardship. Others of you have indeed been very blessed by God and are capable of giving more than what is suggested. The St. Vincent de Paul Society is an international society founded by Frederic Ozanam, a French priest who spent his life ministering to the poor & under privileged in Paris, France. The organization was named after the patron saint, St. Vincent de Paul. Donations put in the Poor Box in the back of the Sanctuary support this cause. On Ash Wednesday this week we begin the Lenten season our time to pay attention to our ongoing conversion. There is surprising hope in remembering you are dust and to dust you shall return, because it reminds us that God is in charge. When we approach God with humility and repentance, we invite God to live in us anew. Give up something to help you grow in faith and charity. Purposely replace your anger toward drivers with a blessing. Set up a place in your home for family or household prayer during Lent. Pray together and bless one another as you move through Lent. Lots of Love Last year we did a service project called Lots of Love, in which students and staff members donated items for chemo care bags for cancer patients. We were able to complete 75 bags. We had a wonderful response from the recipients, and one grateful patient got his organization to give us a $500 donation to expand the project and reach more patients this year. This year, during Catholic Schools Week, when our students put together their "Lots of Love" bags, we had a goal to triple the number of bags made. Each bag contained about 6 items that will help the cancer patients feel more comfortable and loved during the process of chemotherapy. The students made cards with a special personal message of faith and hope for the person. It is our hope that the thoughtfulness and love by our students and families will be felt by each person receiving the bag. Through generous donations, we were able to meet our goal of 225 Lots of Love Bags. These bags will go out to the local hospitals, to patients undergoing cancer treatments. Now Accepting Applications for the school year Every child deserves an effective, challenging, and motivating education. The point of today s Gospel reading is that the coming Kingdom of God is not about excluding sinners but welcoming them and treating them with compassion so that they can be healed. In Paul s letter to the Corinthian community he tells them that whatever individuals decide to do about kosher regulations and the like, they should seek to do what is best for others to the glory of God and the salvation of all. Think of a time when you were able to set aside cultural or religious expectations in order to do what was most beneficial for another. How did your action glorify God? I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the Joy of salvation. PRE-BAPTISM CLASS: First-time parents are asked to attend a Baptism Preparation class.
