2 Fourth Sunday of Lent March 15, 2015 Sunday Reflection It is a paradox of human living that signs of death are so frequently signs of healing. To this day the ancient caduceus, one or two snakes wrapped around a pole, stands as a sign of a pharmacist or physician. We know that the venom of vipers is used to make the antidote which heals those bitten by the same snakes. Despite the commonness of this paradox we still find it difficult to say amen to Jesus preaching of death as the way of life. All of us wants to be lifted up - but not upon the cross. All of us want to have eternal life - but none of us wants to die. When it comes to matters of sin and alienation the cure seems worse than the disease. The prophet Jeremiah attempted to point out the same sort of paradox to his people. Was it truly possible that God could restore the nation at the hand of Cyrus, the king of Persia? We do not look to the enemy for healing and integrity. But God is always breaking through human expectations. Paul knew that whenever we begin to think that healing is wrought by our own hands then we begin to think in very restricted categories. If healing and wholeness are God s work then the possibilities are as limitless as they are undeserved. Lent is an invitation to think the impossible and to live in impossible ways. Whoever rejects the impossible chooses condemnation. Whoever believes, whoever dares to live lifted up with Christ on the cross, is drawn with Christ to God. Our Sat. Mass continues at 4:00 pm now through April 25. Starting May 2, the Saturday Mass will be at 6:00 pm. The Sanctuary Candle is burning this week in memory of Edward George, Sr. from Barb Jamison. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays in Lent (March 20 & 27) at 7:00 pm. (except Good Friday). Our Catholic Faith: THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE Our Lord Jesus Christ, initiated the Sacrament of Penance when He said, Receive the Holy Spirit, if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven, if you retain the sins of any, they are retained (John 20:22-23). He also said to Peter, I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven. (Matthew 16:19). With support of the scriptures, our Holy Catholic faith teaches that we are to confess our sins to an ordained priest. Also, referred to as the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession, the Sacrament of Penance consists of four essential elements: 1. Contrition: A heartfelt sorrow and aversion for the sin committed along with the intention to sin no more. 2. Confession: After an examination of conscience, the confessing of at least all serious sins to the priest. 3. Act of Penance: Satisfaction for sins committed and giving redress for injuries done. 4. Absolution: The priest forgives the sins using a special prayer and the sign of the cross. To help ensure the holiness of the Church s members, Catholics having reached the age of discretion are required to confess serious sin at least once a year (Canon 989). To progress in the sacramental life, Catholics are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Penance often with regularity, even if they are not aware of any serious sin. This is a great opportunity for parishioners to ask God for his forgiveness and mercy during this season of renewal and reconciliation. There will be six priests available for the Sacrament of Penance. We invite and welcome you to attend and be reconciled to God and to one another. The Lenten Parish Service will be on Tues., March 24 at 7:00 pm.

The Scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the Elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. The Scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the Elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation and to give them strength in Christ, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. (RCIA). 2ND BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY WORKSHOP The Holy Sepulcher Bereavement Ministry is sponsoring a 2nd workshop to better serve our parish during times of loss. This workshop is open to everyone. The agenda for the workshop will include the discussion of our Baptismal call and the Church practice in ministering to the bereaved and understanding of the grief process. For the complete month s schedule, visit our website: ELIZABETH MINISTRY In the spirit of Mary and Elizabeth, The Elizabeth Ministry serves our parish by welcoming new babies and providing mentorship and support to expectant and new moms. This wonderful ministry is always open to new volunteers. Mentors are needed to support couples facing difficulties in pregnancy through phone calls, visits, and / or prayer. Mentorship areas include, but are not limited to, adoption, infertility, pregnancy complications, breastfeeding support, early and late term loss, and special needs. If you are an existing mentor, watch for an in the next week to verify your contact information. If you would like to become a new mentor or for more information, please contact Allison at klibstick@centurylink.net or EUCHARISTIC ADORATION During the season of Lent, we will have Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesdays (March 18, 25 and April 1) from 9:00 am - 6:45 pm. Each Lent we are called to reflection, prayer, penance and fasting. Eucharistic Adoration is an opportunity for us to spend time with Our Lord in quiet prayer, meditation and adoration. Also, some additional ways of prayer and reflection available at Holy Sepulcher to enhance our Lenten journey are Daily Mass and Stations of the Cross. The Lord invited us to come be in His presence and spend time with him. WEDNESDAY LENTEN SPEAKER SERIES Our Lenten Speaker Series continues each Wednesday during our 7:00pm Mass. If you are looking to enrich your Lenten journey, please consider joining us for these special Masses. Each guest priest will celebrate Mass. We offer a 3 year old Preschool program, a 4 year old Preschool program, a Pre K program, full day Kindergarten as well as 1st - 8th Grade. Soccer Shots Soccer Shots, the leader in youth soccer development for children ages 2-8, will partner with Holy Sepulcher School to bring a 9 week session for all the children in Kindergarten and 1st Grade! The program starts March 25 at 3:00 pm and the cost is $99. The program is open to Holy Sepulcher students as well as non Holy Sepulcher students. Congratulations to the following students who competed in National History Day on the regional level at Westminster College. The theme this year was Leadership and Legacy; the students were able to choose the topic they wanted to present and the area in which they would like to present it. The performance group (Mary Kate Schratz, Veronica Shaffer, Ethan Skinner and Beatrix Stickney) presented a play on Clara Barton. The exhibit group (Brady Collins, Leah Grady, Mary Bernadine Torrez and Victoria Wilson) presented their board on Ulysses S. Grant. Both groups took 1st place in their division, which makes them eligible for the state competition at Millersville University in May! HORNET S GALA The Hornet s Gala is only a month away! Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 11 at the Hampton Banquet Hall. This year we will feature the band Johnny Angel and the Halos. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $75 / person and will include a buffet dinner, open bar, dancing, live and silent auction items and a reverse raffle with a grand prize of $5,000.00! An RSVP if you can attend is nice to help us plan on the size of the group. We are now accepting candy donations. Adult Faith Formation Jesus is the Anointed One the ultimate priest, prophet and king foreshadowed throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. Join us as we deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ through Fr. Robert Barron s new DVD-based Study Program: Priest, Prophet, King. The program will be held in the YYAC from 7:00-8:30 pm. This is the last session. A Pre-Baptism Class is required for first time parents before the Baptism of your child. The next class at Holy Sepulcher will be held on April 16, 2015 at 6:30pm. We are there from 4pm-7pm Other Events: The Light is On for You THIS WEEK! This Wednesday, March 18 from 7:45-9:00 pm the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available in every parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Now is the time. God is waiting to offer you forgiveness, healing and peace. The light is still on and the confessional door will be open. 40 Days for Life Have you signed up for 40 Days of Life yet? Some people are not comfortable with protesting ; we want you to know that what we are doing is safe and legal. We do not blockade; we simply stand and pray, at a designated distance away from the doorway of Planned Parenthood (933 Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA). Some people pray the Rosary; others pray silently; some groups like to sing; others remain silent. We will provide signs for you to hold. When you pray at a 40 days vigil, your witness serves as a beacon of light to the women going into the abortion center, to the workers inside and to the people driving by. This witness can start a dialogue that can save a life - a dialogue that cannot happen if you are not there. We need volunteers to stand with us for at least 1 hour on Friday, March 27 between 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. Car pooling can be arranged.
