We hope you will feel at home here and, if you do not already have a church home, will consider becoming a part of the Saint Herman Church community. ETIQUETTE TIP OF THE WEEK The bulletin will have an etiquette tip every week so that we can be most reverent and respectful in our worship. This month the tips will be about how to dress when coming to church (in summary, be modest and dress up). See the attached insert. TITHE ONLINE WITH CREDIT CARD at the bottom of the home page of our church website ( there is now an option to pay your tithe via credit card. You can set this to occur every month on the same day of the month. Remember that God asks for the first-fruits, the first 10% of our labors, not whatever happens to be left at the end of the month. GOOD WORKS BASKET August Project: New Icons for Iconostasis Thank you to all who donated to our July project. We put together five backpacks for elementary school children. SAINT HERMAN ANTIOCHIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America Diocese of Los Angeles and the West PRIMATE and DIOCESAN HIERARCH His Eminence, the Most Reverend Metropolitan JOSEPH PASTOR Rev. Fr. Matthew Howell DEACON Rev. Dn. Thomas Ross Contact Information 6988 N. En Dove Road Wasilla, Alaska Pastor s Phone: (907) priest@sainthermanwasilla.org 12 th Sunday after Pentecost August 19, 2018 A NOTE REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION Welcome! In the Orthodox Church, reception of the Holy Eucharist is reserved for baptized, chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared by prayer, fasting and a recent confession. If you are visiting from a non-orthodox church or otherwise are not prepared to commune today, you are welcome to receive some of the unconsecrated, blessed bread which the acolytes are holding. We pray for all to be united in the Body and Blood of Christ! If you would like to learn how you can enter into communion with the Orthodox Church, please speak with our clergy.
2 THE EPISTLE V (For the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost) Sing praises to our God, sing praises. Clap your hands, all ye nations. The Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. (15:1-11) Brethren, I would remind you in what terms I preached to you the Gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He rose on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. Then He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then to all the Apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared also to me. For I am the least of the Apostles, unfit to be called an Apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God, which is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. THE GOSPEL (For the Twelfth Sunday of Matthew) The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (19:16-26) At that time, a young man came up to Jesus, kneeling and saying, Good Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life? And He said to him, Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. If you would enter life, keep the commandments. He said to Him, Which? And Jesus said, You shall not kill, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. The young man said to Him, All these I have observed; what do I still lack? Jesus said to him, If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. When the young man heard this, he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. And Jesus said to his disciples, Truly, I say to you, it THE GOSPEL (CONTINUED) will be hard for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus looked at them and said to them, With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. SAINTS & FEASTS OF THE DAY Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost & Twelfth Sunday of Matthew; After-feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos; Holy Martyr Andrew the Commander and those with him; Venerable Theophanes of Docheiariou monastery on Athos A GOOD WORD So, read the Fathers, even one or two lines a day. They are very strengthening vitamins for the soul. -- St. Paisios of Mt. Athos "Give your children a solid spiritual foundation, and they will be content with whatever they have. Deprive them of a life in Christ, and they will be miserable even in the midst of great wealth." -- His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH All of us have been called to serve God. We do this in our families, our parishes and our secular jobs. We serve God when we serve one another. Our acts of kindness and generosity, our prayers for our loved ones and our enemies, are all offerings to God which He receives from us and uses for the benefit of all mankind. -- His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH The unity of God the Father and Jesus Christ is a perfect unity, and this perfect unity is what our Lord calls us to have with one another. If we act in the name of God, then the proof of our motivations will be revealed in our unity. Endless arguing and bickering is a sign that God is absent and that we have forgotten Him. The contentious person is outside God s grace by his or her desires to dominate others. -- Metropolitan JOSEPH When a man begins to train himself in keeping silent, silence to him seems to be lesser than speech; but when he is trained in silence then he knows that speech is lesser than silence. -- St. Nicholai of Zica

4 Church Etiquette Tip of the Week When we gather to worship God, we conduct ourselves thoughtfully and reverently. These tips on Church etiquette explain some of the common customs that contribute to the holy atmosphere of Orthodox worship. They are not intended as a means to judge other people, but rather as guidelines to help you worship in spirit and in truth. In the coming weeks, each bulletin will have different etiquette tips to helps us be more reverent during our worship. 1. Church Dress - Remember the time when people put on their "Sunday best" to go to church? In fact, dress clothes were often referred to as Sunday clothes. In some parts of the country, this is not common today. In fact, all too often, dress in church has become too casual. In all areas of our lives, we should offer Christ our best. And the same is true of our dress. We should offer Christ our 'Sunday best", not our everyday or common wear. And we should dress modestly, not in a flashy way that would bring attention to ourselves. Our dress should always be becoming of a Christian - especially at church. If you are going somewhere after church where you need to dress casually, bring a change of clothing with you and change after coffee hour. Remember, use your best judgment and good taste when dressing for church. After all, you do not go to be seen by everyone else - you go to meet and worship God. How you dress is a reflection of your heart and of your attitude about how you approach the Almighty God. 2. Children s Church Dress - Shorts, cut-offs, and spandex shorts are never appropriate church wear (for children or adults!). Shoes or sandals should be clean and tied. No one should wear T-shirts with any kind of writing on them ("This Bud's for You!" is definitely out). Children should have some way of distinguishing what they wear to church versus what they wear in everyday life. 3. Women s Church Dress - Dresses should be modest. No tank tops or dresses with only straps at the shoulders (shoulders and chests should never be bare for church services), no short skirts (mini-skirts), and no skin-tight dresses. Dresses should have backs and not be cut low in the front. While long skirts or dresses are preferred for all services, if women wear pants to church, they should be dress pants (not jeans, leggings, etc.). Shorts of any type are not appropriate for church. 4. Men s Church Dress - Men should also dress modestly. While coat and tie are not mandatory, shirts should have collars and be buttoned to the collar (the actual collar button may be left undone, but two or three buttons undone is inappropriate). Slacks should be cleaned and pressed. Jeans (of any color) are usually too casual for church. Shorts are not appropriate church wear. 1
