2 St. Michael the Archangel Parish www. indlaystmichael.org GUADETE SUNDAY Guadete is Latin for Rejoice! Guadete Sunday is the name given for today the Third Sunday of Advent. As any good Catholic knows, Advent is a time of expectation and preparation as we commemorate both the birth of Jesus at Christmas and look forward to His Second Coming. Advent has always had a penitential flavor to it a sort of mini Lent if you will. This is why, like Lent, the color that predominates during Advent is violet although not as deep a violet as Lent. The subtle change in the color violet between Advent and Lent serves a purpose it is an outward sign that tells us something. Advent is violet but not as deep a violet as Lent. Advent is penitential but not as penitential as Lent. There really is a reason for everything the Church does. So today, on this Third Sunday of Advent as we draw closer to Christmas, the Church s liturgy takes on a more joyful tone encouraging the faithful in order to help us to continue preparing for Christ s coming. On this day the color that predominates at our liturgy is Rose. This lighter and more joyful color reminds us to not get discouraged. The time of Christ is drawing near! Rejoice! Even the readings at Mass on Guadete Sunday reflect this theme of rejoicing. Our first reading from Isaiah talks about bringing glad tidings to the poor and healing the broken hearted. Isaiah goes on to proclaim, I rejoice heartily in the Lord, in my God is the joy of my soul. This theme continues with the Responsorial Psalm My soul rejoices in my God. And the second reading from 1 Thessalonians tells us to Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks. And finally, in the Gospel of John, John the Baptist tells us that he testifies to the Light to Jesus that all might believe through Him. Our world can have much darkness in it and, at times, we may be tempted to become discouraged. But Jesus is coming! In fact He is here now! We receive Him in the Eucharist at Mass and listen to Him in Sacred Scripture. And He will come again! When? We just don t know. But be prepared! You are loved by Jesus! There is no darkness in our world, or in your life, that the light of Christ cannot dispel. Light always overcomes darkness. Let Jesus be the light of your life. Rejoice! For He is near! In Christ, Fr. Mike The 4th Sunday of Advent & Christmas Day This year the Fourth Sunday of Advent falls on December 24. This has raised the question of whether the participation of the faithful in a Mass celebrated on Christmas Eve (prior to 12 midnight) would satisfy both the Sunday and Holy Day Obligations. Bishop Daniel Thomas, after reviewing information provided by the Committee on Divine Worship and undertaking several discussions on this topic, has advised that the two obligations to participate at Mass are not fulfilled by participation at one Christmas Vigil Mass. Rather, the faithful, to fulfill both obligations, are to attend a Mass celebrated for the Fourth Sunday of Advent, and a Mass celebrated for the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord. Student Council will again lead this tradi onal All School Mass on Tuesday, December 19 star ng at 8:15 am. We will start Mass in the dark, and slowly throughout the readings the light of Christ will begin to fill the Church. At the end of Mass, luminaries are given out and all are encouraged to set out their luminary on Christmas Eve as a way to guide the spirit of the Christ child to their homes. Even if you can t join us on Tuesday for the Luminary Mass, I encourage you to take part in the tradi on of the luminaries by se ng one out on Christmas Eve as a sign to the community that the light of Christ is alive in our homes and our Parish.
