1 SAINT MARY S PARISH We Need Your Gifts & Talents When we look at the people God has chosen to serve Him throughout the ages, we might fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to them and saying, "there is no way God could use me." However, when we look at most of the Saints, they were all ordinary people, and, in some cases, they were the last people whom you would expect to serve Christ! God calls each of us as we are and has given each of us gifts and talents in order to serve His Kingdom. Here at St. Mary's, we are looking for catechists to help provide quality religious education to the youth of our parish. We will equip you with the tools to help you pass on the faith and to help the students in your class. If you feel called to be a catechist, please prayerfully consider taking on this important role. Parish Office Summer Hours The Office will be closed on Fridays until Friday, September 9th. This year, the feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is not a Holy Day of Obligation. 3 Registration for Religious Education Grade 1 is the grade that children should begin attending religious education classes to begin preparation for the sacraments and to begin growing into a relationship with Jesus and His Church. We are still accepting new registrations for children entering Grade 1. If you are new to our program, we ask that you please come into the Parish Office to see Diane to complete a registration form. Please bring a copy of your child's baptism certificate with you. We have a choice of days, Sunday 9-10:15 AM or Tuesday 3:45-5 PM, to make it easier for you and your family's needs. If you know of any other children who will be entering Grade 1 in September, please spread the word about our program so that everyone can begin this journey of faith together. If you have been away from our program for a year or more, we want to welcome you back. Each year of religious education builds upon the next, so that each student has a solid foundation in faith. We will work with you and your child to help them to reach the level of knowledge needed to begin preparation for Confirmation, which takes place in Grade 9. Confirmation registration forms were mailed out a few weeks ago and are due back on August 15. The Wedding of the Sea Monday, August 15 Witness the spectacular growth of an Atlantic City tradition on Monday, August 15! 2016 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program Commissioner Steven Rogers and the Department of Public Affiars are pleased to announce that applications for the 2016 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program Vouchers will be available this year at Nutley Farmers Market. Residents can register for the program during the hours of 10:00am 2:00pm, on Sunday August 14, 2016 in Municipal Lot #1 at the corner of Franklin Avenue and William Street. As per the Essex County Division of Senior Services, all residents 60 years and older, and income eligible, are eligible to receive vouchers for the 2016 season. Applicants should be prepared to produce valid identification, as well as proof of income. Eligible residents can earn no more than $1,832.00/monthly and $916.00/Bi-Weekly. As in the past, approved residents will receive four (4) $5.00 coupons, which can be redeemed for fresh fruit and vegetables only, at any farmers market in the State of New Jersey, July through November For more information please call the Public Affairs Department at Mass of the Assumption of Mary at Boardwalk Hall at 12 Noon Bishop Dennis Sullivan will celebrate the Mass. Immediately following the Mass, we will process to the surf for the Wedding of the Sea. Bishop Sullivan and Mayor Guardian will enter an Atlantic City lifeboat for the traditional wreath toss. Boardwalk Hall, located at Mississippi Avenue and the Boardwalk, will open at 11 AM. Wedding of the Sea Festival at St. Michael's from 12:30 to 6 PM The festival has returned! Ten restaurant vendors and a beer garden. For the children, there will be carnival games, face painting and a balloon artist. Live music and a DJ. Airconditioned indoor and tented outdoor seating. St. Michael's is located a couple of blocks from Boardwalk Hall at 10 North Mississippi Avenue. 5 Summer Dreams For me, summer is a time of dreaming, percolating (my word for letting ideas grow and bubble to the top) and laying out plans for the future. This often becomes fodder for my weekly bulletin articles. About a day or two before the print deadline I apply the filter of Sunday s readings to make sure this space doesn t turn into an Andy Rooney-like rant. (note: I am a big fan of Andy Rooney s work.) One question that continuously bubbles up is: Who are we as a parish community A small part of the answer lies in what we do and how others perceive us. Yet, who we are as a parish community goes far beyond the qualities and quantities by which we can be described. *********************** Let s switch gears and look at today s 2 nd reading where St. Paul speaks of our being surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. When I think of this cloud of witnesses I am reminded of the words of Isaac Newton: We see farther because we stand on the shoulders of giants. I ve written about the giants on whose shoulders I stand. These were regular people who were witnesses even when they walked the earth. They were my father and grandparents. They were my musical mentor David Sacco. They were my first pastor; Fr. Dominick Schiraldi, whose name day (August 8th) was the way the Holy Spirit led me to some of these conclusions. Who do you think of as the giants upon which St. Mary s stands? Even a relative newcomer like myself can quickly come up with names like Walsh, Owens and Paulson. It is these and more. It is the person who greeted you at the door, proclaimed the scripture, served at the altar, took up the collection or distributed the Eucharist. It s the living witnesses surrounding you to the front, back and side. It s the names of priests, staff and people that are written in today s bulletin and in those before and yet to come. It is you and it is I. Blessed to be serving at St. Mary s, Not all of us can do great things. But we can all do small things with great love.
