COMMUNION ETIQUETTE We invite you to the importance of reverence when you approach the altar to receive Jesus in Holy Communion. When you stand in front of the priest or communion minister it is customary to bow your head as a sign of reverence and to respond Amen as the priest or minister says the Body or Blood of Christ. There are 2 proper ways to receive communion: either on the tongue or in your out-stretched hands. It is not proper or acceptable to reach out and grab the host. In the next few weeks, we will return to the practice of having the altar servers or ushers hold a paten in front of you as communion is distributed. Dear Parish Family, "Do whatever He tells you..." In response to these words of Our Lady, Jesus performs the first of his miracles in John s Gospel... Mary's words are spoken to us as well! Jesus was revealed as beloved Son of the Father in the Gospel for the Feast of His baptism... today His power is revealed in the changing of water into wine. This is the Jesus who invites us to a deeper relationship with Him! When we decide to do whatever He tells us we begin to discover the gifts the Spirit has given us for the common good. We are a truly a gifted, charismatic people... I pray that in the coming months each of us may discover our God given gifts and learn to use them for the common good and for the good and growth of our parish family! As I mentioned last week, next year marks the 100th anniversary of our wonderful church building! We will begin the celebration with our Dinner at Gargiulo's on Sunday, March 3rd. I hope you will invite your family and friends to join us. Please invite former parishioners and alumni of the schools to be with us. We would like to begin collecting pictures of the church over the years... Please make non returnable copies of the pictures; include as much information as possible and drop them off at the rectory. We have hired a bus for the annual ProVita (Pro Life) Mass at St. James Cathedral Basilica on Saturday, January 26 at 5p.m. The bus will leave St. Brendan at 3p.m. Leave your name at the rectory office as soon as possible. As a health precaution, we have suspended communion from the cup until Holy Thursday. We remind you that we believe that Jesus is truly and completely present in both the Eucharistic Bread and Wine. RIGHT TO LIFE January is the month of the annual Right to Life March which takes place in Washington DC. We are happy to provide a bus to the annual Pro Vita (Pro Life) Mass at St. James Cathedral-Basilica on Saturday, January 26th at 5 pm. The bus will leave St. Brendan Church at 3 pm and leave St. James for the return trip by 6 pm. At this meeting, there will be a presentation by Venture Solar regarding the possibility of placing solar panels on our school roof. Fr. Peter will also present a sketch of the proposed painting of the sanctuary area of the Church. All Council members, Finance Council members, and Parish Trustees are expected to attend. Anyone else interested in either of these projects is welcome to join us. TAX CONTRIBUTIONS FOR 2018 Any registered parishioners in need of their 2018 tax contributions to St. Brendan Church must call the Rectory office to request their statement.

(1 Peter 4:10) Week of January 12-13, 2018 Offertory Collection $ 2,178 2nd Collection $ 486 Attendance at Mass 5 pm 58 9 am 49 7 pm am 217 The money that is donated from our weekly collections is an important source of income for the parish. Our weekly expenses include utilities, insurance fees, salaries, ongoing maintenance, repairs, and numerous other bills for operating expenses.as well as the increasing costs for the parish programs, ministries and services we offer here at St. Brendan. If possible, if each of our parishioners could just increase their weekly contribution, BY ONE OR TWO DOLLARS it would greatly help offset the increasing costs faced by our church. We want to assure you that every single penny donated goes right back into our church, the operations of our church and our parish programs. Thank you for your continuing generosity. I cannot express to you how much we look forward to your help each year. Your help enables us to take care of our women and children and also to give help to women who call us for baby s things that have no family or church body to give them what they need for their babies. Many women who contact us are from all five boroughs ranging from women in shelters to women in drug rehab. We thank your people who have supplied us with clothing and baby supplies. 6 PAGE SIX ST. BRENDAN ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH January 20, 2019 UN DIOS VISIBLE Nos resulta difícil transmitir ideas a la gente a menos que le mostremos algo, que le ilustremos lo que queremos decir. Dios, que es invisible y verdaderamente más allá del entendimiento humano, aparentemente tiene la misma dificultad. La gente quiere ver, no solamente quiere escuchar una idea. Por eso Dios nos dio a Jesucristo, Dios hecho visible en el mundo. En las semanas recientes hemos visto cómo al nacer Jesús es mostrado a los pastores y a los Reyes Magos, y luego empezó su vida pública en su bautismo con Juan. El Evangelio de hoy nos habla de su primer signo, que es proveer vino para los invitados a la boda en Caná. Por supuesto, hasta a Jesús, que es Dios hecho visible, no siempre se le entendía en su tiempo y ni siquiera ahora. Por lo tanto, tenemos que considerar lo que vemos: la pobreza y simplicidad de su nacimiento, su humildad y franqueza ante Juan Bautista, su amabilidad y compasión hacia las personas en sus problemas ordinarios, como la falta de vino en una boda. Pero al conocer a Jesús conocemos a Dios. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1502 el Fraile Nicolás de Ovando y doce franciscanos dieron inicio a la evangelización de América en la República Dominicana. Ellos fueron enviados por los reyes españoles con el mandato de convertir a los nativos sin les hacer fuerza alguna. Con los misioneros llegaron Alfonso y Antonio Trejo quienes traían con ellos un cuadro de la Virgen María bajo la advocación de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia. Ellos la llevaron a Higuey, donde en 1572 se le construyó su primer santuario. Poco a poco esta pequeña imagen se convirtió en la Reina del corazón de los dominicanos. María observa dulcemente a su recién nacido quien yace sobres las pajas. Está coronada y lleva puesto un manto azul rociado de estrellas y un escapulario blanco. Lleva una aureola hecha de doce estrellas. En una esquina de la imagen san José también observa al niño por encima del hombro derecho de María. El 25 de enero del 1979 Juan Pablo II la coronó por ser la primera evangelizadora del continente Americano. Con ella los doce misioneros trajeron la Alta Gracia de Jesucristo a nuestras tierras. Aun necesitamos más voluntarios para cubrir cada hora, también necesitamos más personas que se detengan a visitar a Jesús durante el tiempo de Adoración. Le animamos a que lleguen unos minutos antes para firmar el libro de Adoración, se encuentra en la entrada de la Capilla. Baptisms are celebrated in English on the second Saturday of the month. Spanish Baptisms are celebrated on the fourth Saturday of the month. All Baptisms are celebrated at 12 Noon. Arrangements must be made in advance with a member of the Pastoral Staff. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS is a process for adults who wish to be baptized into the Catholic faith. Information about this program, or about reception of First Eucharist and Confirmation for adults, is available at the Rectory. MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least six months in advance and participation in the Diocesan Pre- Cana Program is required. Offering is $500 with or without music. SICK AND HOMEBOUND: Eucharistic Ministers are available to bring Holy Communion to those unable to come to Mass. In the event of serious illness please request the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. PARISH REGISTRATION: All parishioners are asked to register so that we may know you and provide reference letters when necessary.
