1 4 November 2018 All Saints ; All Souls Welcome A warm welcome to everyone, and especially if you are new or visiting. Do please stay on for drinks and to meet people after the 9.30 and services and keep this welcome sheet for your prayers this week. Prayer with the Anglican Communion we pray for the Church of Ceylon (Sri Lanka); for Archbishop Justin; for Bishops Tim, Jonathan and David for the Sisters of St Andrew in Lyon, among them Sister Katie Seal our mission giving: : 500 for Winchester City Centre Chaplaincy, building friendships, listening and supporting others in their place of work; for Liz Russell, the chaplain we support give thanks for all the saints, named and unnamed, and especially those who are an inspiration and example for us personally for those who hold positions of responsibility and power, for integrity and respect in all their relationships give thanks for a growing awareness that the future of planet earth is to some extent in our hands, and that little changes by us can make a difference all who come to our All Souls Day service as we remember our loved ones who died in years past all who work to bring health, wholeness and healing; GPs, health centres and hospitals; all who offer pastoral care, especially our Parish Visitors the unwell: Caroline Behan, Judy Golding, Andrew James, Julia Jones, Laura Liepins, Isla McGregor (age 13), Anna McKenzie (age 11), Emma and Mark Miller, Kate Morgan, Les Scott, Jane Seal (Peter s mother) and Sheila Wilson. All awaiting appointments or treatments those who have died recently, including Malcolm Cuninghame, Joy Hart and Mike Thomas; all who live with the pain of untimely death; God s comfort for their families and friends and all who remember loved ones Please feel free to put prayer requests on the board at the back of church or them to admin@stmatthewstpaul.org. Lady Chapel is set up for prayer, either alone or with one of the prayer ministry team, after the 9.30 parish communion service.

As we keep the festival of your saints, give us their meekness and poverty of spirit, a thirst for righteousness, and purity of heart. May we share with them the richness of your kingdom and be clothed in the glory you bestow. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Matthew 5: 1 12 [p. 711] When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. God, the source of all holiness and giver of all good things: may we who have shared at this table as strangers and pilgrims here on earth be welcomed with all your saints to the heavenly feast on the day of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt-offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them for ever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. The retreat leader, Maggie Guillebaud, is an Anglican priest and former member of the Arts Council; she has a particular interest in early Christianity. 7 Volunteering opportunities Winchester Churches Christmas Project Pairs of volunteers are linked with families that find Christmas a difficult time of year; they ascertain their needs and then shop with or for them.
