3 THE TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST NOVEMBER 18, :00 am Choral Eucharist Service begins on page 355 in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Prelude Andantino Harold Darke ( ) Processional Hymn # 596 Judge eternal, throned in splendor Opening Acclamation BCP 355 Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for Purity BCP 355 Gloria Collect of the Day S280 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray: O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LESSONS Congregation is invited to sit for the lessons. First reading: Daniel 12:1-3 The Lord spoke to Daniel in a vision and said, At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. Lector: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God
4 Psalm 16 Cantor sings antiphon, then all repeat. Please sing antiphon at the end of the Psalm.
5 Second reading: Hebrews 10:11-25 Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since then has been waiting until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds, he also adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more. Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Lector: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sequence Hymn # 382 King of glory, King of peace General Seminary The Gospel: Mark 13:1-8 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings! Then Jesus asked him, Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down. When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished? Then Jesus began to say to them, Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, I am he! and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Steven J. 7 STEWARDSHIP All Saints is blessed with many things. We are first and foremost blessed with the wonderful people who have been brought into our community by following their spiritual journey to our doors. As they come here, some prioritize quiet prayer, some rejoice in the spirituality of the music and sacred liturgy. Still, others are happy learning about how the stories from scripture can impact the way they respond to the demands of living in our complex and oftentimes confusing world. I rejoice that All Saints is not pompous or stuffy. We are made up of real people who share real feelings, deep concerns and practice things like forgiveness, mercy and loving-kindness in the day to day mix of interactions as well as the hard work of running a soup kitchen that feeds the hungry, in season and out of season. We are also blessed with beautiful, historic buildings for worship and a reasonably large financial endowment. But as large as that endowment is, it is still the obligation of church members to support the church financially as well as in every other way. From the point of view of each individual, pledging support to the church is a way of bringing your gifts to the Christ child, like the Magi of old. It is a way of honoring and investing in one s faith community. From the vantage point of the church, it is necessary for us to continue to operate in the name of Christ. We pay bills for everything from insurances, to repairs, from salaries to heating. No one person can do it all, but together we support our historic mission and hope to continue to be a place where the message of Christ is proclaimed and practiced and the presence of Christ is experienced in sacrament, service and community. Please think carefully and give generously to your church! It is not just for us but that others may come to experience the good news of Christ in this place, at this time and in the years ahead! THE JOY OF VOLUNTEERING! Did you know that every week your fellow parishioners spend hours of their Saturday in food preparation and cooking in order to feed God s hungry and needy children. It is strong spiritual medicine, both in the giving and the receiving. You are invited and welcome to participate. VISIT US ON FACEBOOK AND AT OUR WEBPAGE If you re a Facebook user like our page or review us, it will encourage others to join us. Also be sure to visit our website at to see news, read the service sheet in advance, and follow a link to the lectionary readings. Father Yagerman welcomes your comments and feedback and will be glad to answer any questions you may have about our internet presence. The Rt. Rev. Andrew Dietsche addressing the Vestry during his pastoral visit on November 4 th.
