Quentin Road Palatine, IL The Newsletter of All Saints Lutheran Church of Palatine October 2017 We open our doors to shelter homeless persons again on October 7th, ministry requires more than 100 volunteers, dozens of food donors All Saints ministry to homeless men, women and children in our community resumes on October 7th. We are one of 18 faith-based emergency shelters that support Journeys The Road Home, a not -for-profit agency that assists people who are homeless and at-risk of becoming homeless in the northwest suburbs. Every Saturday night from October through April we offer those who come to our door in need warm, dry, secure shelter and nutritious food. To do it we need more than 100 volunteers from the congregation and the community who work face-to-face with our guests on shifts each night we are open as well as dozens of cooks and shoppers who provide the food that we serve. PADS Ministry Resumes There are several ways members can help support this ministry: Become a volunteer. Adults and high school students are hosts for our guests while they are at All Saints. They work one of four shifts each night we re open Dinner, from 6 until 8:30 p.m.; Evening, from 8:30-11 p.m.; Night Owl, from 11 p.m.-3 a.m.; and Early Riser. From 3-7 a.m. Many volunteers once each month; others less frequently or as last-minute substitutes. Shelter volunteers must attend a one-hour newvolunteer orientation before working. (See separate article about dates when orientation is offered.) continues on Page 2 Bethel Food Pantry Food Drive Our Food drive was a success! Our Drive ended up with 2,027 items or 101% of our goal. Our entire Congregation deserves a big THANK YOU!!! Thanks to all the volunteers who contributed to this fund raiser s success including Thrivent, our golfers, boy scouts, and everyone else that contributed throughout the summer. Special thanks to our Sunday School youth who helped push us over the top in September. Pet Blessing Saturday, October 7 at 9:00am The All Saints Lutheran Church Pet Blessing Event is where we give thanks to God for the pets that fill our homes and our lives. Whether you are an All Saints member or just a pet owner, you and your pet are welcome to receive a blessing. We meet in the church parking lot for a service of prayer and thanksgiving. Thank You, Donors! 15 pints of blood were collected on Sunday, September 24th.

2 For All to Know Christ October 2017 Saints Alive! 2 PADS Resumes, continued from Page 1 Help with clean-up on Sunday morning or with the laundry on Mondays. No training is required for these tasks. Clean-up volunteers come in at 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning to clean up and reset the rooms on the lower level of the church for use by the Youth Group and Confirmation students. Bed and bath linens used by our guests are laundered on Mondays by other volunteers. Cook a portion of the meal served each Saturday night. The sign-up book has pages for each night showing the menu items needed. Each line in the book represents a specific number of servings. If you re able to provide more than eight servings put you name and phone number on the appropriate number of lines. Bring hot food to the church ready to serve between 6-6:30 p.m.; we ll keep it warm until dinner is serve about 7:00 p.m. (See separate article about feeding PADS guests.) Shop for non-perishable groceries and beverages. Those needs also are described in the sign-up book for each week we re open. Make a cash donation to help purchase supplies and occasionally food items if not enough donors sign up. Use a pew envelope; mark PADS on the memo line of checks made out to All Saints. As the new season begins there are several new faces on the PADS Leadership Team. Karen Grossmann and Seiji Osayu have stepped up to take responsibilities as site Managers one night each month; Faith Witt is the new Volunteer Coordinator for those helping on the Early Riser shift; Adrienne Bolbot and LeAnne Harris have accepted responsibilities as Kitchen Managers one Saturday each month. We re still seeking volunteers to become coordinators of laundry volunteers and food services. What s Cooking at PADS? PADS guests appreciate home-cooked meals and how you can help us serve great meals. PADS at All Saints is famous for good food, said Diane Gylling, one of the shelter s four Kitchen Managers. We get a lot of great feedback from our guests about our home-cooked meals! she added. We hear the kudos but the praise is really earned by the dozens of cooks and food donors who provide the food we serve each week, said Diane. Your contributions are greatly appreciated, and with your help our volunteers can continue to serve great meals for our guests. Whenever possible please bring food for dinner ready-to-serve. We only have one oven and it is difficult to reheat food which may require a different temperature than what s needed to keep things warm. Cooked food should be brought to the shelter between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. It will be kept warm in the oven until dinner is served about 7:00 p.m. The shelter entrance is on the lower level of the church. Non-perishable groceries, beverages, frozen food, etc. can be dropped off anytime during the week. The PADS refrigerator is in the pantry adjacent to the lower-level kitchen; put anything not requiring refrigeration on the counter. Whenever you drop off your food donation please sign the Food-Donor Log. Food Pantry Transition The Bethel Food Pantry operating out of the former Bethel building has closed. We have now moved to a new location and new name. We are now operating as All Saints Food Pantry and working in conjunction with Partners for Our Communities (POC) at the Community Resource Center located at 1585 Rand Road in Palatine. We are excited about the opportunity to serve more people and serve in conjunction with partner agencies. There will be even more volunteer opportunities than in the past, so talk with one of the pastors or Cindy Williams about your willingness to serve.

3 For All to Know Christ October 2017 Saints Alive! 3 Mark your calendar PADS Not Socks Sunday October 8 th Here are ways you can become involved in All Saints ministry to homeless persons in our community: Not Socks but we need other stuff Sunday, Oct. 8 Pick a tag from the display in the Gathering Space which identifies a variety of things we need. We will be collecting NEW white T-shirts and both men s and women s underwear in all sizes to replenish our stock as well as a several other items needed to support this ministry. We could use a few gently-used duffle bags or backpacks, too. If you forget, the season is seven months long; just bring your donations another day. Or you can make a cash donation using a pew envelope; make checks payable to All Saints and put PADS on the memo line. This will be our first month-at-a-glance volunteer and food-donor sign-up at the PADS kiosk in the Gathering Space during the Ministry Fair following both worship services. Journeys New Volunteer Orientation Adults and high school students who want to volunteer face-to-face with our guests in the shelter must attend a new volunteer orientation conducted by Journeys The Road Home in its offices at 1140 E. Northwest Hwy., Palatine, In October, the one-hour sessions are being offered on Oct. 3, Oct. 11 and Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. and Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. World Community Day Church Women United began World Community Day in 1943 with a purpose dedicated to the cause of peace. Today the focus is still on peace with the goal of creating an inclusive multi-faith community that is just, caring, and supportive. This year All Saints will be the local host of World Community Day on November 3rd at 1pm. The program theme Rekindling Fires of Peace will include music, a short sermon from Pastor Jenn and responsive readings such as prayers. We are looking for women to participate as well as help with hospitality during the coffee hour after the prayer service. Please RSVP to tracywilliams87@gmail.com. Prayer Chain Bethel Lutheran has had an active prayer chain via that continues and we want it to grow. Also, if you have a prayer need you d like to share (in addition to our bulletin insert prayer list), you can Sue Chase the Chill Join us on October 21st from 9:00 am to 11:00 am for another fun morning of knitting, crocheting and chatting for the community. Crafters of all skill levels are welcome as we make scarves for those who might need them. We have some knitting needles and crochet hooks, as well as yarn, but if you have your own, please bring them! Women s Christmas Dinner Save the date, Friday, December 8. Chef Dave Esau will, once again, prepare one of his "awesome" dinners for us. More details coming soon!

4 For All to Know Christ September 2017 Saints Alive! 4 Poker Night All Saints is having a Poker Night Friday, October 13. Gather at 7 pm to select your table partners and game. Bring a snack to share, your favorite beverage and five dollars to contribute for pizza served during the evening. The stakes are not high, so $20 will get you in for the fun and an engaging time. Daily Devotionals and Conversation Each day (Monday through Friday), Pastor Jenn or Pastor Seth write a brief daily devotional that is sent out via . The scripture texts for these reflections are based on the daily lectionary, designed to tie in to and build upon the readings from the Sundays. If you'd like to receive these, please office@allsaintspalatine.org. For those interested, we also have a conversational component. You can also read the devotionals at aslcdevotions.blogspot.com. Here, you can also leave comments either for the pastors or for other members and reflect back on what we've written. Join in the conversation and make the Bible a part of your daily life. Habitat for Humanity Happening - October 7 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11) Did you know that All Saints is part of the Spring of Life partnership, which includes 7 local churches, in support of Habitat for Humanity? As you may know, Habitat contributes building materials and volunteer labor and lunches-- for families who otherwise could not afford a home. We refer to this as a hand up, not a hand out, as families are required to assist with labor and qualify for interest free loans. We are grateful for our members who are among the most reliable, and knowledgeable volunteers on home builds in Northern Fox Valley. As we begin our 15th build this one in Des Plaines--we invite you to participate in an important fundraiser at Harper College s Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 7, featuring live entertainment (Felix & Fingers Dueling Piano s with our own T. Committees Need You Do you have a few hours a month to make All Saints a stronger place? We could use your help. You could help by joining a committee. It s not as boring as it sounds. Each committee operates a little differently, but mostly you meet once per month and share your ideas and perhaps take on a small task or two. That s it. But it makes a world of difference. If you d like to help, we could use you with our Worship, Property (building maintenance), Outreach (making All Saints known in the community), Stewardship (helping us use all of our time and talents and treasure wisely), Technology (computers and IT), Financial Support (money, money, money), Learning, Social Ministry and other Committees. Talk with either of the pastors and we ll get you hooked up.

September Faith and Fellowship Groups Maybe Breakfast Meet before heading to the office or the rest of your day for Bible Study and conversation at 7:00 am on Wednesday mornings at Red Apple (2121 S. Plum Grove Rd. in Palatine). If you are interested, talk to Pastor Seth so he can reserve a space. We can always make room. or How About Lunch? Over the last few years the women and men of Bethel have met for lunch at the Red Apple restaurant once each month. The ladies meet on the 4th Thursday at 12:30 pm while the men meet at 12:50 pm on the 3rd Thursday, They plan on continuing this and welcome All Saints members to join them. There is no need to call anyone just show up. But if you do have any questions, call Pat Schmitt at Be a PADS Volunteer Lists All Saints maintains several lists to communicate with members. There are three different lists: Publicity is for general publicity announcements. Devotions is for our daily devotions. Education is for parents of students age 3 through grade 8. Weekly Sermon is to receive an video link to that week s sermon. HURRICANE RELIEF Lutheran Disaster Response is hard at work on the ground providing immediate relief to those affected by hurricanes, and LDR will stay there until the work is done, years later.
