3 From the Rector... Alleluia! Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia! Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family, Greetings in the name of our risen Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ! This is the season of renewal, refreshment and regeneration! We who have shivered under the blanket of winter, rejoice at every song that Spring may be breaking through. As joyful as is the anticipation of our world coming alive with green leaves, flowers and the music of songbirds, nothing compares to the joy of the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who brings new life to not only His creation, but also to His people. We began April with the celebration of the triumph of God in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I offer my heartfelt thanks to all those who enabled our many and varied services of worship: to the members of our Altar Guild for their extraordinary work and dedication, all those who read Scripture and/or lead Prayers of the People, to our servers, Eucharistic assistants, sidespeople, and to Sherisse and the choir who helped us sing praises to God, to our secretary, Cathie Matthews and all who assist in the office. As well, grateful thanks to Joy Gervais for her work with children Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, and to all who assisted with the Seder Supper. And thank you to all the other saints who quietly, in the background, carry on their work for the building up of the Kingdom of God. I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:3-6 We continue in Easter Season throughout the month of May, which culminates in the Day of Pentecost [24 May] which celebrates the event, 2000 years ago, when God poured out His Holy Spirit on believers, empowering followers of Jesus, everywhere, to share in the Mission of God. The Holy Spirit is a gift for all believers whose presence and gifts enable us to be witnesses to the life, love and power of God, that we may be the church God calls us to be! We end the month with Trinity Sunday [31 May]. Our Diocese as a whole will gather in Sault Ste Marie May, for Synod. The mandate of the Diocesan Strategic Plan has been completed, and this Synod will cast the vision for the future. Let us keep in our prayers the Bishop, Clergy and lay delegates of Algoma. And let us pray that in all our deliberations and decisions, Jesus may be seen. During the summer months, I will be embarking on an extended time of study leave/sabbatical/vacation. I am grateful for the wonderful team I have in our Wardens and Treasurer, who have been so encouraging and supportive in the undertaking of this venture. And I thank God for each member of our Parish family. In the wonder of the Easter season, in this time of resurrection and new life, may the Holy Spirit infuse us in new ways that we will be vividly aware of God s presence and love in all of our lives; and praise Him for all the ways in which He has blessed us so abundantly. May the power of new life, renew us in His love, renew our relationships, renew our structures and renew our hearts; and may the Holy Spirit flow through every fibre of our beings bringing hope, help and healing. Praying for you the fullness of the Holy Spirit in all our lives, I remain, The Venerable Dawn Henderson + Rector Image:

4 From the Wardens This past month has been stimulating and busy. Two special announcements that were made at our Church Services on April 19 th, are worth noting. First, as instructed by Vestry, we are moving ahead with plans to provide accessible washrooms, an expanded Narthex and a new entrance to All Saints. In addition to the badly needed washrooms, this will provide much more space for greeting and fellowship for overflow and for small meetings. It is estimated that the new addition will cost about $300,000. We have set aside $50,000 from a bequest and have applied to the Diocese for a loan of $250,000 from the Archbishop Wright Building Fund. On the advice of our treasurer, Tom Peppiatt, we plan to repay this loan over 25 years at $10,000 per year plus interest. Our Parish has no other debt. Once we receive approval from the Diocese, we will proceed with final drawings and tendering. It is our hope to have shovels in the ground this Fall. We are very excited about this project. If you have not seen the conceptual pictures of the new addition, they will be available at the back of the Church for the next few Sundays. Second, as our Rector approaches the 25 th anniversary of her ordination, we have persuaded her to take a well-deserved and much needed, extended time for a combination of sabbatical/study/ vacation. During that time, Ven Dawn will be completing a course at Wycliffe College. We are pleased that she is currently researching additional educational opportunities. Dawn will also be spending time in the development of new programs for All Saints growing out of the courses she has been taking. In Ven Dawn s absence, the Wardens and Treasurer will act as an administrative team to ensure that we have coverage for all services, including Wednesday chapel services and nursing home services, and to ensure that everything runs smoothly. We will be well supported by the Parish Advisory Council. We are still working on coverage but can confirm that The Rt. Rev. Tom Corston, retired Bishop of Moosonee, will be here for four Sundays, and The Rev. Dr. Jay Koyle, the Diocese s Congregational Officer, will take a service during July. Also, we are delighted that our own Bishop, The Rt. Rev. Dr Stephen Andrews will be with us on July 12 th. Costs related to our rector s time away will be covered from a fund which we have on hand for this purpose, as well as a contribution from our Bishop. It will not affect operating funds for our Parish. If you have any comments or questions about either of these announcements, please contact one of the Wardens. Thank you. Hugh Mackenzie, Barb Willms. Betty-Lou Durr, Sue Dixon, The Wardens

10 Our Bishop has asked that an informational letter from the Primate, Fred Hiltz, and the National Indigenous Bishop, Mark MacDonald, be available to each parish. The full text of the letter will be posted in our Narthex. Below are excerpts. Canada s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) which has addressed the sad legacy of the Indian Residential Schools will hold its final event, the closing ceremonies of its seven-year tenure, in Ottawa for four days commencing on Sunday, May 31st. The daily themes are as follows: Day 1 is We are all in this together ; Day 2, We still have lots to learn ; Day 3, Reconciliation means respect and change ; Day 4, This ending is only the beginning. In the spirit of the 4th-day theme, we are calling our Church into 22 Days of prayer and renewal in our commitments to healing and reconciliation among all people the Indigenous Peoples of this land and all others who have come and settled and also call it home. These 22 Days will take us to the National Aboriginal Day of Prayer, on Sunday, June 21st. Inspired by a conversation among a number of Cathedral Deans in dioceses where the TRC held National Events, and with the support of a number of General Synod staff, this call is heartily endorsed by the national House of Bishops. Together we are calling the Church to take time in each of these 22 Days. to listen to the story of a survivor of Residential Schools. to pray for all those affected by the long shadows of Residential Schools. to ring church bells for the murdered and missing indigenous women and girls. to consider our steadfastness on the long journey to reconciliation in this country. to consider our commitment as a Church to stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples in their cry for justice. to post your own stories of learning and witness to the call to renewed relations with The First Peoples of this land. In these 22 Days between the Closing Event for Canada s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and National Aboriginal Day, we invite one and all to join us in labouring for that for which we pray, saying, In speaking and hearing and acting upon the Truth may we as individuals and as a nation meet the hope of a new beginning. Great Creator God, who desires that all creation live in harmony and peace, [remembering the Children we dare to dream of a Path of Reconciliation where apology from the heart leads to healing of the heart and the chance of restoring the circle, where justice walks with all, where respect leads to true partnership, where the power to change comes from each heart], hear our prayer of hope, and guide this country of Canada on a new and different path. Amen.

16 Acts 2 JESUS and Pentecost But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you [Acts 2:8a] This happened on a day that was called Pentecost and it was a time when the city of Jerusalem was full of people who had come for this festival. There were people from all over the Roman Empire. When the disciples told these people about Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit, each person was able to understand exactly what the disciples said. Now this was a miracle because these people spoke different languages; but everyone understood through the power of God s Spirit! After He was raised from the dead on Easter Sunday, Jesus spent 40 days with His disciples. He taught them about the ways God had prepared His people to be ready for Jesus, the Messiah; and He explained to them many of things which had happened before the crucifixion. It was a time of great joy! After those 40 days, Jesus returned to be with His Father, God, but before He left, He promised the disciples that they would receive power from God to be able to spread the Good News about Jesus throughout all the world. So, the disciples met together and prayed and waited. Just 10 days after Jesus left, they were all together when suddenly the room was filled with a huge sound from heaven the sound of a mighty, rushing wind. And then bits of flame rested on top of each of them. This was the coming of God s Holy Spirit which Jesus had told them about! Peter spoke to the crowd and explained this miraculous event hundreds of years before the time of Jesus, one of the prophets named Joel, had delivered God s promise that this very thing would happen. God had promised that He would pour out His Holy Spirit on His people men and women, young and old. And God also said that whoever called on the name of Jesus would be saved. The Church began that day and thousands of people were saved. 17 Genesis Isaac God s mission is to reconcile the world to Himself to redeem humankind, all of creation the whole cosmos! How would God [Yahweh] restore relationship, [fractured by humankind s rebellion Genesis 3], with all the peoples of the earth? He began with a baby. In Genesis 12 and 15, God called Abraham and cut a covenant with him God promised to provide Abraham with descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, with a land, and with blessings so that through him all the nations of the world would be blessed. But Abraham and Sarah, his wife, became anxious about God s delay in providing a descendant even just one! Sarah, believing her barrenness to be the problem, suggested Abraham have a child with her maidservant, Hagar. [Throughout Scripture, and indeed in life, things go badly when people, without consulting God, take matters into their own hands.] Hagar has a son, Ishmael, and although God assures Hagar and Abraham that Ishmael will the prosper, he is not the son of promise. God will provide a son for the elderly couple, and, several years later, He does Isaac, whose name means laughter because when Abraham and Sarah heard the news that they would have a son in their old age, they both laughed. Why might God have made Abraham and Sarah wait so long for their son to come along? Well, perhaps it was so that God received the glory. When you are 100 years of age and your wife, only a few years younger, has a son you know it s God! As the son of promise, Isaac, grew there was tension between him and his older brother, Ishmael. As a consequence, Ishmael, and his mother, Hagar, were sent away, into the wilderness. Despite this, God assured Hagar that God would bless Ishmael and make him fruitful and multiply him exceedingly. [The descendants of Ishmael became the Arab peoples.] However, God s agenda was to bless the world through Isaac and make covenant with the son of promise, not the son of human scheming. Although the son of promise, Isaac grew up as any child would, until one day, sometime after Isaac s 17th birthday, [God] said [to Abraham], Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you. [Genesis 22:2] Now, many of the cultures of the Ancient Near East practiced human, and especially child, sacrifice. But the God of the Hebrews forbade such a thing. You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way; for every abomination to the LORD which He hates they have done to their gods; for they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods. [Deuteronomy 12:31] Humankind had been created in the image of God; therefore, human life was of the highest value. What, then, could God have been thinking when He seemed to demand the very thing He had prohibited? The New Testament Letter to the Hebrews [11:17] explains that God was testing Abraham. God was not tempting Abraham; He was testing him, trying him, or refining him as one refines metal to separate out the impurities. God s great mission of reconciling the world to Himself requires a people who will trust and obey God, and not count the cost. Jesus made it clear there can be no compromise: If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. [Luke 14:26-27] What might Abraham have thought when God instructed him to sacrifice his son? Notice that Abraham does not hesitate to follow God s word: he rose early the next day and set off for Mt Moriah. The Letter to the Hebrews [11:19] offers an insight to what Abraham might have thought He [Abraham] considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead. The entire Old Testament points to Jesus. There are many images which are types and shadows that are revealed, or made plain, in Jesus. In the life and death of Jesus, there are many echoes from this account of Abraham and Isaac. Of course, both Isaac and Jesus were referred to as only sons and sons of promise: Isaac, the one promised to his parents; Jesus, the anointed one whose coming was foretold by the prophets. Abraham, his two servants and Isaac traveled a 3-days journey, and then the father and son went on with only each other as company. As Isaac carried the wood of the burnt offering, so Jesus carried His own cross to Golgotha. Isaac asked his father, Where is the lamb for a burnt offering? When Jesus cousin, John [the Baptist] saw Jesus coming to be baptized, he said, Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Both Isaac and Jesus willingly take up their spot on the place of offering. But the accounts differ in a critical way: the Angel of the Lord intervened with Abraham to halt the sacrifice. God supplied a ram caught in a thicket as a substitute. On the third day, Isaac and his father returned home. Genesis records that A saying arose, In the Mount of the Lord, it shall be provided years later, on that same hill, Mt Moriah, the place later known as Calvary in Jerusalem, God did indeed provide. Jesus, God s only Son gave us his life on the cross, that he might shatter the chains of evil and death and banish the darkness of sin and despair. [BAS Eucharistic Prayer 2]. This is the fulfilment of the promise made to the Patriarch, Abraham, that through him all families of the earth shall be blessed.
