From the Rector... Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family- The Lord spoke ]...if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 Our Lenten journey is a journey not only to the heart of of our faith as Christians the cross and the empty tomb but also a journey to our own heart and to the very heart of God. The Season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday [05 March- services of Holy Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes, in the Church, at 9.30 am and 7.00 pm], provides us opportunity and encouragement, with our Lord, to take a look at our priorities and those things which drive us or hold us, or indeed hold us back. It is a time to seek healing and forgiveness. Our Lord s words to Solomon, from Second Chronicles, show us His way admitting we need healing, prayer and repentance, before God. This is the preparation for the celebration of the triumph of the resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter. It is also our preparation for the triumph of the breakthrough of Love in our lives by the fulfilment of prophecy and His conquering death. Death is swallowed up in victory...thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ 1 Corinthians 15.55,57 The invitation to observe a Holy Lent [BAS page 282] invites us to a season marked by selfexamination, penitence, prayer, fasting and almsgiving, and by reading and meditating on the Word of God. It may seem a daunting task in this busy world, but we begin with small steps. There are daily Bible reading guides at the back of the church, and many other resources availble for private study. To assist in our Lenten journey we will resume our DVD Study covering the entire Bible, The Story. This is my story; this is your story; this is the greatest story ever told this is God s Story! This excellent series is narrated by Randy Frazee and Max Lucado and gives a big picture overview of all of Scripture. [There is more information elsewhere in Parish News, and also posted on our website.] Undergirding everything we do as a church, is prayer. If each one of us would but spend 10 minutes a day in prayer asking God s blessing, guidance and grace for the people, life and ministry of All Saints, it would revolutionize all of ours lives. Using our Parish Prayer Booklet, in one month, we can hold before our Lord our entire parish family. The Prayer Calendar has been moved to the 2nd last page of this issue why not post it on the fridge to focus prayer. In Lent, as well, there will be opportunity to gather together for prayer, both as a parish and as a Deanery Every blessing as we journey together in Lent. Yours, in the love of Jesus Christ our Lord, The Venerable Dawn Henderson + Rector

From the Wardens The present team of wardens are thrilled to have Sue Dixon join the team in the position of Deputy People's Warden. If at any time you have something to discuss or an idea to share, any of the team would be only to happy to chat with you. Please feel free to call us or speak to us after church. Working together we anticipate an exciting We are thrilled that we did not have a financial deficit this past year. Our treasurer reports that it is the first time in 7 years that we have not been in the 'red'. We are most grateful. It is an encouraging sign. We pray that parishioners will continue to generously support the ministry of All Saints'. In Service and Prayer Barb Willms, Betty-Lou Durr, Andy Martinolich and Sue Dixon The Wardens for 2014 January 2014 Treasurer's Narrative January is always a difficult month after having a high givings month in December. We had a loss of $2369 which was lower than both last year and budget. Income of $18,023 was $23 higher than budget and $1,674 higher than last year. Expenses of $20,392 were $187 lower than budget and $1,353 higher than last year. The major increase from last year is in property due to the increase in snow and cold temperatures The operating account has a balance of $9,328. The ASH renovation has a balance of $62,810 still to be spent. Tom Peppiatt, Treasurer 5:00 7:00 pm in Lower Sutherland Hall Pancakes Real Maple Syrup Sausages Ice Cream Fruit $8 per person; $5 for children Hope to see you there! Why SHROVE? Shrive, [past tense shrove or shriven] means to confess and receive absolution from a priest. For hundreds of years it has been customary to go to confession before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. Since Lent involves prayer, study, almsgiving and fasting[!], Shrove Tuesday was seen as the last opportunity to use up any of the rich foods in one s pantry before Lent butter, eggs, cream What better way to use up such luxuries than in pancakes! And real Maple Syrup? Well, how Canadian, eh?

PAC Parish Advisory Council The new Parish Advisory Council met on February 13th; the listing below summarizes the work and discussion from the meeting. Next meeting: Saturday 8 March at 8:30 am. Respectfully, Sue Dixon, PAC Chair To understand the Bible, says authors and pastors Randy Frazee and Max Lucado, you need bifocal lenses, because two perspectives are involved. The Lower Story, our story, is actually many stories of men and women interacting with God in the daily course of life. The Upper Story is God's story, the tale of his great, overarching purpose that fits all the individual stories together like panels in one unified mural. The Story video curriculum will open your eyes to God's master-plan unfolding in the lives of the Bible's characters-and in your own life. Discover the heart of God's Upper Story, and the joy that comes as you align your story with God's. This study highlights key events and people in Scripture to provide the big picture of God s story. Please contact Ven Dawn or the Office for more details. Everyone is invited! And welcome!

Outreach A sincere thank you to Katharine Ford who has chaired this committee for six and a half years. Katharine has exemplified the John Wesley motto (see below) which has accompanied her reports in the newsletter. Katharine is always on the lookout for needy causes, local, national and global Christine s Place, water purification tablets for Haiti, Sleeping Children of the World, Walking with our Sisters, Anglican Council of the North, to name a few and she has brought these good causes to our congregation. Under her leadership, we have strengthened All Saints support for Mission to Seafarers. Katharine will lead the Lenten Loonie/Toonie drive for Outreach again this year. On March 5 th, Ash Wednesday, please take a film canister from the basket and label it with your envelope number. Please fill the canister with loonies and toonies throughout Lent and return it on Easter Sunday. This is one of our major sources for Outreach dollars. Two projects, which we hope All Saints can support in 2014, are the Do all the good you can, Diocese of Algoma Mission to Tarime, Tanzania and our growing Friday by all the means you can, night ministry providing dinners for the youth who attend Bible study in all the ways you can, at The Door, Highlands Youth for Christ. Please remember when you in all the places you can, see Katharine Ford to say thank you for her caring service on behalf at all the times you can, to all the people you can, of Outreach at All Saints. as long as you ever can! Dorothy Johnstone for The Outreach Team ~ John Wesley Parish News is one of the many ways we communicate with our parishioners: in it we give thanks for events of the previous months, and look forward to the days ahead. Would you consider sponsoring an issue, or part of an issue, of Parish News? Your sponsorship might be as a thanksgiving, or as a memorial, or just because... Each month, we distribute 130 copies of Parish News at an approximately cost of $150. The Outreach Committee joined Katharine Ford (sitting in the centre on the right) for lunch to celebrate her contribution to Outreach at All Saints. 7 The Majority are Children: By Suzanne Interview with Raphael Nyabala, NCCK, Kenya January 17, 2014 Half a world away but right there on the computer screen, PWRDF partner Raphael Nyabala, Camp Coordinator for the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) at Kakuma Refugee Camp, appears through Skype video. It is 9:30pm in Kakuma and Raphael has spent the day touring the camp, meeting with NCCK staff and volunteers, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) officials and international NGO representatives, and seeing the site being constructed for the camp s new arrivals. The situation in the camp is quickly becoming overwhelming, but Raphael maintains the same measured, thoughtful calm we came to know when he visited Canada last fall. What amounts to a civil war is raging in the newly-minted country of South Sudan on Kenya s northern border and for the past two weeks 500 to 700 refugees have been arriving every day in Kakuma, situated just 125 km south of that border. Since violence broke out in South Sudan on December 15, 2013, over 413,000 people have been internally displaced and over 27,000 have fled to neighbouring countries including Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia. 9,800 of those refugees have arrived in Kakuma. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Response (OCHA), About 80 per cent of the South Sudanese refugees are children and aid agencies are concerned about their wellbeing and safety. This official report is confirmed by Raphael who states that the vast majority of those arriving are women, children and the elderly. The men he explains, are fighting in the war, have been killed or, in the case of young men, have been conscripted by one side or the other in the conflict. The wave of refugees is straining the coping mechanisms of neighbouring countries, states the OCHA. Raphael confirms that regular supplies for the camp already bursting with over 129,000 refugees are being diverted to meet the needs of the new influx of refugees and that all other work is on hold. Two hundred temporary shelters a day are being erected. 2,000 shelters in total are now in place out of an initial emergency target of 5,000, with supplies for further shelter construction available for only one more week. As Raphael points out, the problem is a lack of finances to purchase more supplies rather than their availability. The Government of Kenya through their Department of Refugee Affairs (DRA) and the UNHCR has managed to secure land to extend the camp site for 20,000 to 22,000 more refugees, but given the rate of refugee arrivals that land will be filled within the next month and a contingency plan for yet more land will be needed. See more at The lack of resources is creating social pressures in the camp. The water supply is limited, and some water is having to be trucked in.,inadequate shelter and overcrowding especially in the reception area creates the environment for potential conflict and gender-based violence. The UNHCR is providing transportation from the South Sudan/Kenya border in order to avoid exploitation by local transporters, but Raphael explained that the desperation of the refugees is such that a knife fight had to be averted on one truck when a refugee perceived that his place had been taken by another. In addition, while the conflict in South Sudan is largely political, it is exacerbating ethnic tensions between the Dinka and Nuer peoples, and those tensions are likely to be brought to the camp. In the midst of this crisis situation, Raphael and his team are working hard with the UNHCR and other agencies to try to provide safe accommodation, food, health services, social services and education for the many children who are arriving. Education is also needed to address gender-based violence and the growing number of people with HIV and AIDS arriving in the camp. When asked what his message to the Canadian government would be, he called for concrete support for the refugee operation in Kakuma including land preparation for settlement and construction of dwellings for the asylum seekers, education resources to enable them to continue studying and livelihood support programs for those needing to work. Raphael also

asked Canadian Anglicans to contribute to efforts to preserve and sustain the lives of asylum seekers who have fled the war in South Sudan. Most of all he asked for our prayers for the refugees and those who seek to welcome the stranger half a world away. Submitted by Joy Lewis, PWRDF Representative for All Saints Refugees arriving by UNHCR truck at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. With that theme in mind, we are encouraging the children to consider helping one of our Starfish children, by contributing their change to the world bank sitting on our Church School altar. 12 John 9. Mark 7: Mark 2:1-12. JESUS and the Physically Challenged Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the mute sing. [Isaiah 35:5-6a] A miracle happened: the man could both hear and speak and he told everyone what God had done for him. Many people heard about Jesus and they filled His house. Four friends were determined to help their friend who was lame [he couldn t walk]. They had to carry their friend on a stretcher up onto the roof of the house, opened up a hole and lowered their friend down in front of Jesus. Jesus healed the man and told him to Take up your bed and walk. And right away, the man got up and was able to walk. Jesus was the Messiah/Saviour that God had promised through the prophet Isaiah. Jesus healed many people and forever changed their lives. In Jesus day, people who were sick and those who had disabilities, had a very difficult life! Sometimes family members took care of them, but sometimes, they just had to look out for themselves by begging on the streets. But Jesus always had love for those who were unwell and often healed people so that they could live independent lives. 700 years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah had told God s people that there would come a day when God s Messiah/Saviour would heal the blind, the deaf, the lame and the mute; that prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus One day Jesus met a man who had been born blind. Jesus disciples that God was punishing this man for something he or his family had done wrong. But Jesus said, this was not right. And so, Jesus healed him and the man could see! This healing caused quite a stir in the Temple because no one had else had healed someone born blind. Another day, Jesus was in the north of Israel and he met a man who was both deaf and mute he couldn t speak]. Jesus put his fingers in the man s ears, touched his tongue, prayed and said, Be opened! 13 Covenants Part 1 Do you know people whose promise alone is as good as any contract? Do you recall a time when business was transacted on the strength of only a handshake, where each party made promises of what they would do and how they would act? If you do, then you already understand a bit about the concept of covenant. What is a covenant? A covenant is an unbreakable contract. Both the Old and New Testaments are full of covenants. Some covenants were between people of equal social standing: Jacob, the son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham, entered into covenant with his Uncle Laban [Genesis 31:43-55]; each guaranteed to respect the other's boundaries (a non-aggression pact). This was a fairly common pattern: people or nations entered into such "parity" covenants, promising to respect and protect each other. Some covenants were between people who were in a lord-subject relationship: both King David and King Solomon entered into such "suzerainty" covenants with nations they conquered. But the most notable covenants in the Bible are between God and His people. There are 7 such covenants: the Edenic, the Adamic, the Noahic, the Abrahamic, Sinaitic, Davidic, and the New Covenant [more of these in months to come]. Unconditional or Conditional? At times, God entered into unconditional covenants with His people. Genesis 12 and 15 recount the covenant promises God made to Abraham: that God would give him numerous descendants, the Promised Land, and blessings so that through Abraham s descendants, God would bless the whole world. God made these promises unconditionally--they were dependant on only God's everlasting and faithful Word, not upon anything Abraham or his descendants would or would not do. At other times, God established conditional covenants: the Sinaitic [Mt Sinai] covenant is a prime example. God promised to choose the nation of Israel [newly delivered by God from Egypt] to be His treasured possession...a kingdom of priests, a holy nation [Exodus 19:5]. But there were obligations on the part of the people: they had to obey God's holiness code (the 10 Commandments plus hundreds of other laws outlined in Exodus through Deuteronomy). God always keeps His promises, but the people? Not so much. What Is the Pattern of Covenants? Many of the covenants of the Near East found by archaeologists follow a recognizable pattern. God's giving the 10 Commandments reveals this very typical pattern of covenant making. The "person" initiating the covenant (God--in modern legalese--the party of the first part) introduces Himself and outlines His position and historical relationship to the covenant partners (the Hebrews --the party of the second part). The Lord says to His people camped around Mt Sinai, "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of slavery (Egypt) and out of the house of bondage." [Exodus 20:2] Then there are listed the "stipulations", that is, terms and conditions. The terms are contained in the 10 Commandments and other laws. God is, in effect saying, "You want to be in covenant relationship with Me? This is how you must live": have no other gods, honour your parents, do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not covet... After the stipulations are given and promises made, then there follow the penalties for breaking the covenant. Much of the rest of the Old Testament is the account of God's people breaking the covenant. And yet God in His infinite grace, mercy and love continues with His people. Why Should Modern Christians Care About Covenants? Baptized Christians are covenant partners with God. And since every baptized Christian is in covenant with God, we are also in covenant with one another. Any time we slander another Christian, we impair our own covenant relationship with God. Next month: what does it mean to be covenant partners with God, and one another.
