From the Rector... Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family, Holy and might God, we give you thanks for the triumph of Christ in the lives of his saints [BAS page 428] Jesus Christ is known to the world by how His saints live in the world. We gather this month in celebration of saints, throughout the world, and throughout the millennia. At our baptism, we are marked as Christ s own forever, called to be his saints. The many ways in which the saints of All Saints, day by day, live their faith in the community, in word and action, stand as a witness to God s calling. Abu Sa'id wrote: The true saint goes in and out amongst the people and eats and sleeps with them and buys and sells in the market and marries and takes part in social intercourse, and never forgets God for a single moment. And Frederick Buechner writes, In His holy flirtation with the world, God occasionally drops a handkerchief. These handkerchiefs are called saints. The month of November begins with All Saints Day [01 November]. We gather with traditional said Eucharist at 8.30 am, and Family Service at 10 am, praying with thanksgiving for all the saints, on earth and in heaven. There are saintly activities for the younger saints, following the service. The following Wednesday [04 November], at 9.30 am, we gather in the church for the commemoration of All Souls - the day we pray for saints who have gone before us - those we love but see no longer. Please join us to remember your loved ones. Remembrance Sunday is on 08 November. We remember and give thanks to God for saints in the service of God and country - for all those men and women who served, and who continue to serve, our country in war and in peace, in the military, the merchant marine, and our police forces. As we remember, we pray that our world might know true peace. We continue discussion and discernment regarding the future shape of ministry in Muskoka; let us pray for mercy, grace, wisdom and God s guidance in all our on-going conversations and decisions. Please keep in your prayers our Diocesan family as the Bishop s Council and the Executive of the Diocese meet this month [02-05 November] As we pray that God would grant us grace to follow his blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment [BAS page 428], I give thanks to God for all the saints of All Saints, and I hold you in my heart. Yours, in the love of Christ Jesus our Lord, Saints are simply men and women who have fulfilled their natural obligation which is to approach God. Evelyn Waugh The Venerable Dawn Henderson + Rector

From the Wardens The Parish Advisory Council and Corporation have met since our last report in the All Saints newsletter and we look forward to our next PAC meeting. We are happy to report that our parish has been able to participate in the Lift up Your Hearts initiative since reporting in our last newsletter. The initiative s motto is celebrating God s generosity. One of the hopes of this initiative was that the exercise of lifting up our hearts to God in thanksgiving for his work among us will deepen our sense of unity and make us more effective as witnesses to God s excessive grace. It is often when we consciously lift up our hearts and thank God for his many blessings in our lives that we become aware of how much He has really blessed us. When considering simply walking into our own parish, we have many blessings to thank God for: consider the friendly faces you see when you walk into church each Sunday, these people are a blessing; they greet and welcome newcomers and regulars alike with a smile, a hello and a bulletin. The altar is always beautiful and looks this way because of the many busy hands behind the scenes making it ready for Sunday worship; we are very blessed! Consider the other parishioners around you, these people are our church family and we participate in the Eucharist with them and are able to share Christ s peace when we shake their hands; our church family is a blessing to all of us! Each week Venerable Dawn enthusiastically states Lift Up Your Hearts and we say We Lift Them Up to the Lord ; we are blessed to have Ven. Dawn and the gift of her enthusiasm! There are many ministries that go on around us and behind the scenes but they all come together to celebrate God s love and we do that together in unity. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and participation in this important initiative. We have so much to be grateful for! Your All Saints Parish Wardens Hugh Mackenzie, Barb Willms. Betty-Lou Durr, Sue Dixon, Want to hear the composer sing our Church School Theme Song for this year? Children of the Living God: [after the ad] Pastoral Care Pastoral Care continues with our regular ministries and looks forward to our next meeting. We are happy to report that we will be delivering poppies to those in long term care and in hospital with the modified poppies with the pin removed. We are grateful to all of those who help and support our team. Respectfully submitted, Sue Dixon & Betty-Lou Durr,

First Annual Ride for Refuge Saturday October 3, 2015 Three riders and nine walkers from All Saints' Anglican Church Huntsville joined in the family friendly fundraising, Ride for Refuge. taking place in Bracebridge. The Ride for Refuge has been an annual event in Canada and the U.S. since 2004, raising funds for the displaced, vulnerable and exploited. In October 2014, Craig Roberts, his wife Tina Chatillon and good friend Shawn Payne participated in the Ride for Refuge and raised funds for a Breakfast Program for another church in Bracebridge. Craig questioned why would they not get their own church involved and raise funds for All Saints'. A presentation was made to The Parish Advisory Committee, and soon after the Outreach Program of All Saints' Anglican Church of Huntsville became an approved charity as their fundraising funds would be used to support current outreach programs and meet newly identified needs of the vulnerable in our community. The Starfish Family program supplies monthly food hampers, helps with winter wood and hydro bills and in general responds to disadvantaged families on an individual basis. The variety of children's needs range from diapers to winter boots, school supplies, school snacks etc. It is their hope that these efforts will assist families in becoming self sufficient. And so, on Saturday October 3, a cold and blustery day in Muskoka, our three riders, Craig, Tina and Shawn rode 50 kms while our nine walkers walked 5 kms to raise funds for All Saints' Huntsville. Our nine walkers included our beloved Ven. Dawn Henderson, Outreach Chair, Dorothy Johnstone, Church school leader Shirley Spiers, our Youth group leader Joy Gervais, Altar Guild leader Darla McMeeken and three of our youth, Alexis & Taiya Martin-Smith and Emily Roberts. Bette Roberts got us organized, made the event happen and participated on a rented scooter. We even had a support van driven by Rod Roberts. By 9:00 am. we had all received our Ride for Refuge T-shirts and lanyards, had been offered tea, coffee or hot chocolate and a variety of muffins. When we returned to our starting place at Muskoka Falls Public School we were rewarded with a hearty meal of salad, chili & rolls and dessert and beverages. It was heart-warming to have the comradeship during our walk, with time to catch up on news and to just enjoy the day. Not to mention the vigor and energy displayed by our three youth. Book time on your calendar for next year's ride/walk on October 1, 2016.

PWRDF: Primate s World Relief & Development Fund PWRDF Announces $20,000 in Relief Funds for Syrian refugees in Europe September 11, 2015 By Simon Chambers Hungarian Interchurch Aid (HIA) has started to provide psychosocial services for children in two temporary reception centres: Bicske and Vámosszabadi. In both centres an average of children stay temporarily, typically for a couple of days. The target group of the project is children between 3-14 years. HIA surveys show that the psychosocial assistance is a stop-gap support for these people that will assist the children in particular. PWRDF has announced $20,000 in funding to support Syrian and other Photo: Fekete Dániel/HIA-Hungary/ refugees in Hungary, Greece and Serbia through the ACT Alliance. Hundreds of thousands of refugees have made their way from ACT Alliance Syria and northern Africa into Europe either across land or the Mediterranean Sea 250,000 in 2015 alone. Local populations and governments are unable to handle the huge influx of people. The Greek island of Kos, for example, has a population of 33,388. Between January and July of 2015, the police and coast guard registered 18,200 refugees who landed on Kos, an increase of 1200% from the previous year. Currently, 450 refugees are arriving on Kos every day, where they have to be processed before they can continue on to the Greek mainland. As the time for processing continues to increase, the need for food, shelter, sanitation, and water for these thousands of refugees also increases. ACT is working to provide food, water, shelter, health care, sanitation, education, and psychosocial support to over 300,000 Syrian refugees in Greece, Hungary and Serbia. In addition to these basic supports, supplies to help the refugees get through the winter, including warm clothes and bedding, will also be provided. PWRDF continues to support Syrians displaced within their own country, as well as those who have fled to Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt. A more complete listing of PWRDF s response to the Syrian refugee crisis can be found here. 10 Starfish Update The Christmas Giving Tree program will run again this year. This Outreach Program, although directed to Starfish, is operated as an independent project. No tax receipts are given. New team members are added. Emergency calls from the Salvation Army to take on extra families are often received and accepted. The families receive a generous hamper and a gift of clothing and special gifts for each family member. Cash gifts are used to pay for the food hampers, extra money is used for hydro deposits. We find that often church families will do a hamper as a Christmas project. A.C.W. has always donated the turkeys. Please choose a tag, purchase the gift, wrap the gift and return the gift with the original tag attached. Cash donations should be left at the office or placed on the collection plate. Thank you, Karen Coleman, Patty Payne P.S. Gifts should be returned by 16 December Psalm Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. 5 For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures for ever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

To understand the Bible, say authors and pastors, Randy Frazee and Max Lucado, you need bifocal lenses, because two perspectives are involved. The Lower Story, our story, is actually many stories of men and women interacting with God in the daily course of life. The Upper Story is God's story, the tale of his great, overarching purpose that fits all the individual stories together like panels in one unified mural. The Story video curriculum will open your eyes to God's master-plan unfolding in the lives of the Bible's characters-and in your own life. Discover the heart of God's Upper Story, and the joy that comes as you align your story with God's. This study highlights key events and people in Scripture to provide the big picture of God s story. Please contact Ven Dawn or the Office for more details. Everyone is invited! And welcome! Each session, teacher and historian, Ray Vander Laan, brings to life different places and people of the Scriptures. Every week we watch a minute DVD clip and then have an open discussion about what we ve seen. Please feel free to join us! All materials are provided. Beginning Wednesdays at 10:30 am Seeing the places where particular passages in the Bible took place really helped me understand what Jesus meant. Please contact Ven Dawn or the Office for more details. Everyone is invited! And welcome!

Happy Belated Thanksgiving everyone!! Although "Thanksgiving" isn't exactly celebrated here in Spain, I still have a tremendous amount of things to be thankful for today. The first Thanksgiving in North America was when explorer Martin Frobisher from England celebrated his safe arrival in Newfoundland... This weekend, I am extremely thankful for my safe arrival in Barcelona, Spain and my incredible first month here! My first day, after having no sleep on the overnight 7 hour plane ride, I was greeted by my host parents, and taken on a couple errands. I was torn between wanting to look out the window of the car to the most beautiful city I had ever been in and my host mother who seemed to want to tell me everything all at once, and was talking to me with a thick Spanish accent. Being welcomed to an entirely new world while having not slept is quite an unreal experience. Here is a picture captured at the airport. I'm in my Rotary Blazer and with my luggage 3 seconds after meeting my new parents! My first weekend here (4th day in Spain), I went to a town called Roses, 20km from the French border, where my family has another apartment. From the living room window of the apartment you can see out to the Mediterranean Sea. We went to dinner and roamed a town built around an old medieval castle, and spent the next day at the beach before we returned to Barcelona. [Here is the view from the apartment (much more beautiful the second day when it was sunny]. After our weekend in Roses, I had a week to settle into my new life in the beautiful city of Barcelona before school started on September 14. During that week... I met with girls that I would be going to school with, other new friends (friends of my host brother), went city sight-seeing with other exchange students, there was a Catalonia Independence Manifesto with 2 million people in the streets of Barcelona, and I visited Montserrat, a beautiful mountain with a cathedral at the top where I attended a mass and a well known boys choir performed.. and even more!... At my new house I have a father, Jaume, a mother, Esther, a brother, Marcel, who is a year older than me and has lived in the United States for one year through the Rotary program, and a daughter a year younger than me who is studying in Wisconsin, US right now through Rotary for one year. We live in an apartment in the neighbourhood of Barceloneta, Barcelona, about a one minute walk from the beach. I feel very lucky to have been assigned this host family - who I will be staying with all year. They have been so welcoming, and helpful with all challenges a Cultural Exchange offers. They understand I want to learn Castellano (Spanish) and when we aren't busy will teach me words/ rules, will ask me questions so that I must speak, and have conversations that could take 25 minutes if we were speaking English but take us an hour. My host brother has agreed to give me some structured lessons as well! Adjusting to a new home, and family structure/norms of people who are pretty much strangers and speaking another language is definitely not a walk in the park, but I am very fortunate to be with this family, in this city. The school system is very different here compared to most high schools in Canada. There are about 1000 students in my school that teaches JK (age 3/4) to 2nd Bachillerato (age17/18) - there are about 60 students in my entire grade. There are very limited course options. There are two main pathways you can take - science/technology or social/humanitarian. Once you're in one pathway you have 1 or sometimes 2 choices of classes. I am in the social studies pathway (although my schedule has been arranged because of exchange student reasons), I am almost always with the same students in the same classroom and different teachers come to us rather than the students switching to each teacher's classroom. There are two things I find most challenging about my school. 1) My first challenge is the actual voyage to school every morning. It is one hour long. It commences at 7am in which I travel in a car about 10 minutes to a train station. I catch a train to another station and switch trains. I then catch a bus up close to my school, hop off and walk another 5-7 minutes up a steep hill, then up 3 flights of stairs to my classroom for 8am. The first day I attempted this journey, I ended up arriving at school an hour late. As a girl from a small town with no public transportation, I am new to train stations (especially ones in foreign places) and ended up enjoying the traumatic experience of hopping on the wrong train, travelling miles away from where I should have been. I stayed strong and somehow managed to correct my major error and find my classroom. The next day I made sure I would only get on the correct train - L6 to Reina Elisenda. I waited for 45 minutes

and the train never came. Feeling defeated at 8:20 I went back to my home. Called my host mother at work and told her. Then I went to my bedroom and cried. The next day my host mother came into the train station with me. The reason why I had so much difficulty was because the train I was told to take doesn't actually run between 7am-9am...It wasn't my fault!!!!! So I now take the route as explained above, and all is well. 2) The fact that almost everything is in Catalan (the official language of Catalunya, my region of Spain, a language which I do not know). Almost every single class is in Catalan, and all the students speak in Catalan with each other. Everyone knows Castellano (Spanish), so that is how I speak to people, but they all speak to each other in another language... Catalan is a romance language similar to Spanish with some similarities to French, but a bit harder School can be hard, but at least the view from my classroom isn't bad! (sometimes clearer days allow for the pinky/orange sunrise...muy bonita) Barcelona is the best city I have ever been to! I am so thankful to have the opportunity to live here for one year. The architecture everywhere is so pretty! Big stone buildings, churches, cathedrals, cobblestone pedestrian-only streets, trees and plants everywhere, lovely weather, people, public transportation... I am really enjoying it! Because of the good weather here, and the Spanish fiesta-loving culture, Barcelona always has fiestas/ holidays/celebrations/events going on. The most famous for Barcelona was two or three weeks ago, its name, "Merce". It is a 10 day fiesta in Barcelona in which everyday in various plazas of the city and different times there are events taking place day/night for anyone/ everyone to enjoy! There was a carnival in my neighbourhood, fireworks at the beach, concerts, dances, shows, human castles, more concerts, art galleries etc...and almost every event was free!! There is always something to do here - I love it so far! On my third weekend here, I went to a Rotary event in Madrid with all the Rotary exchange students in all of Spain, some Rotex (including my host brother and our friend), and various Rotarians from the three Rotary Districts in Spain. It was great meeting all the other students, sharing our experiences! This weekend I am off to Logrono for a weekend of just my Rotary District. I really want to see more of this beautiful country!! Here are all the Canadians!! This weekend my host mother suggested I make Thanksgiving Dinner for our family and friends here in Barcelona! So my host mum and I slaved away in the kitchen Saturday night (starting at 12am-1:15am because we are in Spain) and Sunday until the guests came. There was no turkey - so we had chicken, we did not have official gravy (but a new other delicious salsa) or stuffing. I'm pretty sure the cranberry sauce was jam, and we had homemade Pumpkin (butternut squash) pie. It was no Tusz/Filliter Thanksgiving dinner...but the entire lunch was delicious and I think my Spanish friends were impressed! We even went around the table saying things we were thankful for! My host mother told me, "Rotary has an exchange program for students to learn a language and culture in one year... But you, Marina, want to learn it in one month!" It is true, the language barrier is rough (and I have two of them) but poco a poco I will learn. Everyday becomes a little easier. I am so grateful for all family and friends back at home supporting me and encouraging me on this adventure. I have so much, so many people, so many places, opportunities, adventures and experiences to be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend. I hope you all ate a lot of food, and had some lovely things to be thankful for too! Sincerely, Marina PS. Included are just some of my photos of where I live and things I've seen/been up to! Here is a picture of all the students! (I got hidden slightly because I'm so short)

Matthew 13:31-33; Mark 4:30-32; Luke 13:18-21 Parables of Jesus: The Mustard Seed & Yeast The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed [Luke 13:31] Jesus told another parable about yeast, the thing that makes bread rise. He said the Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast just a little bit will cause about 100 loaves of bread to rise! When Jesus began His ministry, He called a few fisherman to join Him. Then His little group grew to 12. After He rose from the grave, He told those 12 to go everywhere and tell people the Good News that God loves them and sent His Son to save them. Those 12 told other people, who told other people, and soon people from one end of the Roman Empire to other knew about Jesus. And from that small beginning of 12 people God has added many, many people who believe in Jesus. Today, about 2 billion people follow Jesus that s almost 1/3 of all the people on planet Earth! We may feel that our prayers and our words and action can t do much. But Jesus tells us that even the smallest things can make a huge difference when God is at work. Jesus often told stories called parables, to explain the Kingdom of God to His followers. It s sometimes hard for people to understand God because God is perfect and we are not; He knows everything and we do not; He is everywhere in the universe at all times, and we can only be one place at a time. And so, Jesus used stories about things that were very common to his listeners to help them understand God and His Kingdom. One day, Jesus told the story of a mustard seed. The mustard seed is very, very small. If you put one on the end of your finger, you would have to look closely to see it. Jesus used the example of the mustard seed. Although a mustard seed is tiny, once it is planted and starts to grow, it can produce a plant that may be as tall as 3 meters [10 feet]. Now the people listening to Jesus would probably have laughed out loud because there are many huge trees in Israel, many larger than the mustard.
