From the Rector... Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family, And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. Then he said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Revelation This passage from the Revelation of St John the Divine speaks of new creation, inaugurated by our Lord, and which will be fulfilled when God s kingdom comes on earth as in heaven, and all things are made new. We live in that in-between time, anticipating that great new beginning. With the activity of summer drawing to a close, September itself is a beginning: for the younger saints, it s back to school, and, for many of us, the beginning [as un-liturgical as it may be] of our church year. As Bible teacher Warren Wiersbe has said, The Christian life is a series of new beginnings. Over the past two months, there have been joyous celebrations of Baptism, Confirmations and Weddings each one marking new beginnings. We give thanks as we welcome the newest member of Christ s family in baptism, we rejoice with those who have renewed their commitment to Jesus Christ in their Confirmation, and we celebrate with those who begin a new life together as husband and wife. In our Deanery of Muskoka, the Change Team has begun its work to implement the Diocesan Executive s Proposal for the Re-structuring of Muskoka [See Parish News Summer 2016]. With its three-year mandate, we will see many new beginnings. It is a challenging time for all of us transitions are! - but we look forward to new opportunities of mission and ministry that go beyond our walls and boundaries. Sunday 11 September marks the 15 th anniversary of 9/11. Our 10 am service on that day will be a time to remember, and also to honour the First Responders of our own community -- the men and women who serve and protect our community, not only in times of emergency or crisis, but every day. We rejoice in all those who are part of our parish family and give thanks to God for those volunteer their gifts and talents in the ongoing life and mission of our parish whether in the Sunday services or in the various groups, teams and activities that contribute to who we are. As followers of Jesus we need to remember that who we are and whatever we do it s all about God. He is the starting point, and not coincidentally, the ending point! God is both the subject and the object of our worship. We live in the light of the One whose we are: Jesus Christ, the same, yesterday, today and forever! Hebrews 13 Yours in the love of Christ Jesus, our Lord, The Venerable Dawn Henderson + Rector

Sunday 17 July 2016 was a very special day of Worship services and Confirmation of seven candidates [see next page], celebrated by the Right Reverend Dr. Stephen Andrews, Bishop of Algoma. This day was Bishop s Stephen s last visit as Bishop before taking up his new duties [as Principal of Wycliffe College, Toronto]. All Saints Church, Huntsville, was able to include a special presentation gift from our congregation crafted by Susan Higgins, one of our confirmands. The exceptionally lovely fusion glass, in the shape of a mitre, represents the Holy Spirit. Bishop Stephen and Fawna also received a gift for their new grandson, Thomas, and Soapstone gifts for Fawna. Everyone enjoyed a light lunch and shared a specially decorated Confirmation cake.

Congratulations to our candidates for Confirmation: Geri K, Emily C, Mason H, Samuel T, Ravyn H, Susan H, Alexis M-S. They each received a new signed Bible, an Algoma Bookmark, certificates, and a silver cross engraved with the date.

From the Wardens What a summer we have experienced in Muskoka! One incredible day of sunshine after another. Hopefully amid the busyness, you have had time to relax, reflect and enjoy the company of family and friends. We extend a warm 'welcome back' to those parishioners who have been away over the summer months. We missed you and we are glad that you are back. Thank you to parishioners who filled in and went the extra mile when needed over the summer. We have GOOD NEWS to share! After a long wait and much red tape, the sale of the small portion of land adjacent to our neighbour, the Wilgress Cafe, is complete. As a result the contract for construction of the new addition has finally been signed and construction is expected to begin this SEPTEMBER 30th. We are thrilled to finally begin this long awaited, much anticipated project. You will no doubt wonder about ease of entry into the church during this time of construction. There will be no problem or interruption in this regard as the contractor will erect a barrier fence along the left side of sidewalk from the present church doors out to the sidewalk on High Street. Hence we will be able to enter and exit as usual with no interruption to services. We are pleased to find that the general response to our bulletin change has been positive and that as a result visitors and those unfamiliar with our worship service have found it easier to participate. The Wardens Barb Willms, Hugh Mackenzie, Sue Dixon, Patty Payne

Prayer for Muskoka in our Time of Transition From Ven Dawn...In this time of transition, as you pray for the Transition Team and the changes that the Re-organization Proposal will bring to all of us in Muskoka, I invite you to include this prayer, composed by our Pastoral Care Team: God of Love, we thank You that, through Baptism, we are made members of the Body of Christ, and that You call us to be Your Church in the world. We thank You for the Anglican community and for the diversity within our Diocese and within our Deanery of Muskoka. In this time of transition, as we face the challenges, the pain and the opportunities that change presents, we ask for Your guidance, strength, compassion, courage, comfort, the unity of spirit and the bond of peace. Grant Your wisdom and grace throughout the process that all things may be done to Your honour and glory. and the building up of Your Church, now and for generations to come. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. AMEN Diocesan Prayer for the Election of a Bishop Gracious and loving God, we pray that you will call among us as our bishop a person of prayer, a faithful disciple, a compassionate pastor, a chief shepherd of your own choosing; who will guide the people of this Diocese of Algoma as they share the transforming Gospel of Jesus Christ. Bless those who will elect Algoma s new bishop with gifts of discernment and understanding, so that they will have the wisdom to recognize whom you are sending. In this time of transition; keep us all steadfast in faith and united in love, trusting in the promises of your Kingdom. Fill our hearts and minds with your grace and favour that our words and actions embody the Story we proclaim. We ask this through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

PWRDF: Nepalese helping Nepalese Simon Chambers Left: Airlifting construction supplies to Langtang in Nepal. Photo: Langtang Conservation Committee After the devastating earthquakes in Nepal in April and May of 2015, PWRDF was approached by Nepalese Canadian Community Services, a Toronto-based group supporting Nepalese expatriates living in Canada, who wanted to work with PWRDF to respond to the disaster in their homeland. They raised over $13,000 for reconstruction which they wanted to use to rebuild homes for families who lost everything in the quakes. PWRDF, working with the Lutheran World Federation in Nepal, identified the community of Langtang for this work. Langtang is a village located high in the mountains near the Tibet Autonomous region. Langtang was damaged in the first earthquake, but was affected far more in the second quake. 116 houses were destroyed, and most of the community s infrastructure- roads, monasteries, the community centre, and open spaces- were gone. All 116 households who lost their homes were provided with materials to rebuild corrugated iron sheets, hammers and nails, roofing plain sheets and more. Langtang s remote location in the mountains and the destruction of the roads in the earthquakes made delivery of the materials very challenging. Helicopter lifts were required to bring in the materials. Once the materials had arrived, families were able to work together to rebuild their homes. As more government support from the Nepalese government becomes available, families will upgrade the homes they have already built to be even stronger and longer lasting, integrating the materials provided by PWRDF into future construction. Thanks to the work of Nepalese Canadians, PWRDF and the Lutheran World Federation, over 100 families in Langtang now have homes again, and are able to focus on rebuilding their communities and livelihoods. For more information contact: Joy Lewis, All Saints PWRDF Rep. See more at PWRDF Launches $400,000 Food Project in South Sudan Simon Chambers Over the next few months, PWRDF, with Finn Church Aid (FCA) and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) will sup port over 10,000 people who have been forced to flee their homes by the violence in South Sudan. The program in rural communities in Mundri County, Western Equaotria state of South Sudan will primarily support vulnerable women and children. A large number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) have settled in Mundri County after fleeing the recent fighting in Juba, Bor and Malaki. The 10,028 IDPs supported by the project during the next 3 months will have 2 full meals each day. Each individual will receive: 7 kg of maize flour, 1.3kg of beans, 350 ml of cooking oil, 200g of sugar, and 100g of salt per month for 3 months. They have already planted crops, but need this food to tide them over until their crops are ready to harvest. The food provided by PWRDF will ensure they are healthy and have enough energy to care for their crops and to work on projects for the community. Those who are able to work will repair and improve community infrastructure including local water points, a bridge, a health care centre, and a compound in Amadi where some IDPs are being hosted.

The two meals a day will also help children to stay in school and to be able to focus more on their school work. It will also help nursing mothers and their babies to fare better. In addition, some or all of the 12 currently idle bore holes (small wells) in the host communities will be tested and, where possible, repaired. Access to safe drinking water will help prevent the spread of water-borne diseases and conflicts between people over the scarcity of water, and children will no longer have to walk long distances to bring water home for their families. By working with CFGB, PWRDF is able to access 4:1 matching funds from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), enabling PWRDF s $80,000 contribution to do $400,000 of work. With two full meals a day, students like these in South Sudan will be able to focus on their studies rather than their empty bellies. 14 Luke 15:1-7; Psalm 23 JESUS PARABLES: Lost Sheep For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life. [John 3:16] Scribes and Pharisees were religious people living in the time of Jesus who were experts in the Law God gave His people in order to keep them safe and living in peace with one another. But Jesus worried that the Scribes and Pharisees had become more interested in keeping the rules than in looking after God s people. The Scribes and Pharisees complained that Jesus ate and talked with people who did NOT keep the Law. So, Jesus told them a parable. What is a parable? Parables are stories about the Kingdom of God about living God s way. Jesus asked His listeners whether they, if they were shepherds, would leave 99 sheep to search for 1 lost sheep. [Don t worry about the 99 shepherds often worked together and so this shepherd most likely left the 99 in the care of another shepherd.] But many people might think to themselves No, I would not leave 99 to find just 1 who chose to wander away! Jesus shows that the shepherd in the parable would do anything to find the lost animal: he would search even in the wilderness, no matter how dangerous! And when he found his lost sheep, the shepherd carried it home on his shoulders and rejoiced that he found it. If you were the 1 sheep who was lost, would you want your shepherd to search for you? Of course! In Scripture, God is said to be like a shepherd The Lord is my shepherd. [Psalm 23] And just like the shepherd in Jesus parable, God cares for every single person and wants everyone to know that He loves them. In this parable, Jesus is, in part, asking the Scribes and Pharisees [and us!] whether we care that much for people. Do we care for those who are different from us? Do we share with people that God loves them? We can pray that God will help us do that. 15 READ: Luke 15:1-7 [-32]; Psalm 23 JESUS PARABLES: Lost Sheep For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life. [John 3:16] This month, we begin a new series: parables for Younger and Older [notice not old! Just older] Saints. We are indebted to Kenneth E. Bailey and his excellent books, Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes, and Jacob & the Prodigal. Parables, in the context of the New Testament, have been described in many ways: earthly stories with heavenly meanings; stories which illustrate a spiritual truth whether or not they actually occurred. They often seem to contain a fairly benign, surface meaning which we often presume is aimed at other people. However, we must never be satisfied with a surface interpretation and should instead look deeper meaning, and be prepared that they pack quite a wallop! Not just for other people. There are three initial questions to ask when examining a parable: Where is Jesus? When does this parable occur during His ministry? Who is listening? In Luke 15, Jesus is in Perea, on the east side of the Jordan. He is about to cross over the Jordan River [as did the Hebrews in The Book of Joshua when they came to re-take the Promised Land] and climb up to Jerusalem. It is just before the last week of His earthly life, just before what we have come to know as Holy Week. Does Jesus know what lies ahead? Oh, yes the cross. His conversations and parables turn decidedly serious. His audience for this parable consists of tax collectors and sinners who were listening to Him, and Scribes and Pharisees who were grumbling at Him. Scribes and Pharisees were experts in the Law which God had given His people to keep them safe, to facilitate peaceful, just and righteous living within other Hebrews and with other peoples. The written Law, the Torah, had been given 1400 years before the time of Jesus at Mt Sinai. In the intervening years, there had also arisen a tradition of Oral Law add-ons. Rules about rules. Jesus periodically says, You have heard it said but I tell you And then Jesus often reiterates the original intent of the written Law and God s original purpose in Creation. together was often part of a covenant ceremony in which people pledged their unbreakable relationship and responsibility. One didn t eat with just anybody. Jesus parable would annoy the Pharisees in its opening words: which of you having a hundred sheep and having lost one... Although sheep were considered clean animals under the Law, shepherds were perpetually unclean [since they had to handle excrement and occasionally, dead animals.] They were often considered untrustworthy brigands; they were never allowed to give testimony in court. Particularly uncomfortable for the Scribes and Pharisees was the fact that God likened Himself to a shepherd throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. The Lord is my shepherd [Ps 23] For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand [Ps 95] God expected good-shepherd behavior from the kings of Israel and from its religious leaders; but were the Scribes and Pharisees fulfilling that mandate? Would they risk their own lives to find one lost sheep? Jesus knew He was on the way to the cross did He expend everything in order to seek and save the lost? Yes. Now, adults understand the concept that lost has more than one meaning. Sheep can get lost, but so can people in an entirely different way [and it doesn t mean lost as in Toronto traffic!]. People can wander away from God. The Pharisees knew who had done that the tax collectors and sinners! But is Jesus, in part, really challenging them about who indeed was lost? Could it have been them? Could it have been Israel? [Could it be us?] The shepherd of the parable rejoices when he finds the lost sheep and tenderly carries the helpless sheep home. And then Jesus conclusion: there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous who need no repentance. Who is the sinner? Who needs to repent? Who is righteous? Every one of Jesus listeners that day would have known the answer from Scripture: All we like sheep have gone astray [Isaiah 53:6. Ps 14:3]. All are sinners. Everyone needs repentance. And righteousness and the invitation to eat and drink with Jesus come only at the Lord s grace-filled invitation. And having received such grace, should we not also extend the same? That s what Kingdom living is about. So the Scribes and Pharisees object that Jesus is eating with those kinds of people. Eating with someone during the time of Jesus meant far, far more than it does today. Hospitality was enormously important. Eating
