3 From the Rector... Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family Jesus said, You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere - in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria and to the ends of the earth [Acts 1.8 NLV] On 19 May we celebrate the Day of Pentecost [Pentecost literally means the fiftieth day after the Passover feast]. After Jesus ascended into heaven, the small band of Jesus followers, both men and women, gathered together, as Jesus had instructed them, waiting. Ten days after the Ascension, the waiting was over - the promise of power from on high [Luke 24.49] became reality as the Holy Spirit came upon the believers - and the Christian church was born. And, in our Lord s own words, the purpose of the Church is to be His witnesses, wherever we are. We speak the gospel of Jesus Christ with our lives, demonstrating, by our words and actions, the power of God to transform lives. We, the members of Christ s body are meant to be signs of God s Kingdom come to a world that waits its fulfilment. So, what does it mean, for us, to be church? What does it mean to be the Church here in Huntsville? Certainly, it doesn t mean just being a very beautiful stone building on a hill. We are part of the Body of Christ, and He is our head. So, who and what does Jesus call us to be?. These are questions to be asked at Pentecost. Leslie Newbigin in The Household of God wrote, Every Christian has his or her life in Christ only as a member in the body of Christ. We share in the life of Christ only by sharing it with his people... in a determination to build up one another in faith, hope and love into what he has called us to be. We are the church. And we are to be His witnesses. We have opportunity to come together with other members of our Huntsville Christian family, praying for the concerns of our community, in the Community Prayer Gathering on Friday 03 May, 7.00 pm, at St Andrew s Presbyterian Church. Everyone is encouraged and welcome to attend. We as the Anglican church family of Algoma will be gathering for Diocesan Synod in Sault Ste Marie 8-11 May. The theme for Synod is Mission on the Margins, as we seek to be His witnesses in all places. Please keep in your prayers our Bishop, all the Clergy and lay delegates of Algoma who come to take counsel together for the ongoing faith, life and witness of our church. An important part of our church family is the Anglican Church Women. The Deanery ACW Spring Gathering is on 15 May at Christ Church, Port Sydney. Later in May [27-29], Muskoka is hosting the Diocesan ACW Annual, at Hidden Valley. With a new constitution, the ACW will gather to discern how best to be Jesus witnesses in their various roles. The opening service will be on Monday 27 May here at All Saints, at 7.00 pm. The following Sunday [02 June] is ACW Sunday, celebrated at the 8.30 am service. Praying for all of us a fresh in-filling of God s Holy Spirit who alone enables us to be His Church in this place, I remain, Yours in the love of Jesus Christ our risen Lord and Saviour, The Venerable Dawn Henderson + Rector
4 From the Wardens Final completion of the Diocese Assessment package has been foremost on the minds of corporation this past month. Thank you to all who responded in any way to the request for input into this process. Congregational involvement included opportunity to share ideas, concerns and hopes at three specific meetings opportunity to be involved in the study of a book entitled 'Practising Our Faith" opportunity to review the financial and property piece of the assessment package invitation to confidentially reply by to the office with ideas, suggestions etc. We are most appreciative of the time taken to be involved and are grateful for all and every suggestion. Thank you. On April 6th, the corporation met to review, classify and compile all ideas brought forward by the congregation from the above sources. We organized these ideas into the following categories: 1. Becoming - offer more varied opportunities to develop spiritual growth, understanding and vision 2. Belonging - continue to foster strong church community where all feel welcome and comfortable 3. Mission - consider becoming involved in a mission outside of our community 4. Financial Viability - financial stability so that we can focus on our true mission From the suggestions that we received from you, we organized some very specific ideas under each of the above categories. Hopefully we have understood the spirit of your intent. All of this and other information was presented to the Diocese Assessment team on April 19th. and to the PAC on April 20th. Jay Koyle reviewed it with corporation on April 23th. It is our sincere hope that we have understood and interpreted your desires, hopes and concerns accurately. It will now be up to us at All Saints' to prayfully breath life into our HOPES. These HOPES will be presented to the general congregation in the next few weeks. Your involvement continues to be most necessary for progress and growth in our attempt to move forward. May God be with all of us as we prayerfully listen and seek his direction. Submitted in prayer and service, The Wardens The Empty Tomb - Easter at All Saints
5 PAC Parish Advisory Council The PAC met in April and spent the latter part of the agenda touring All Saints House. Bill Nunn gave us a tour of the incredible amount of work done to date; we were able to see the layout and, of course, the wonderful views this building offers. Brochures that Ed Willms has put together of All Saints House are now completed and being distributed. It is wonderful to see this beautiful building being brought back to life; we are grateful to the saints who are making this happen! The PAC also spent time in our agenda going through our financial report in detail. As well, the corporation provided a summary of the assessment work that included everyone's input. Three fundraising events were approved by the PAC with more information to follow; however, everyone might want to keep their calendars open for June 9th, September 29th and October 18th! Your PAC meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month; if you'd like to attend please let us know and we'll make sure we have a seat for you around our table. PAC members are listed on the back of the newsletter. You are encouraged to share your thoughts or concerns with any one of them. Sue Dixon, PAC Chair Blessing the Palm crosses on Palm Sunday Ven Dawn and the children Pastoral Care The Pastoral Care Team met in April and are happy to report that Easter Remembrances were sent/delivered to many of our saints. Pastoral Care also donated some food to victims of a fire in Port Sydney. Our regular prayer shawl, funeral rose and card ministies continue. Special thanks to those who support us with our prayer shawl and food efforts! As a reminder, our walking group meets each Monday at 12:00 in the Summit Center; all are welcome. Respectfully, Sue Dixon, Pastoral Care Chair
6 To understand the Bible, says authors and pastors Randy Frazee and Max Lucado, you need bifocal lenses, because two perspectives are involved. The Lower Story, our story, is actually many stories of men and women interacting with God in the daily course of life. The Upper Story is God's story, the tale of his great, overarching purpose that fits all the individual stories together like panels in one unified mural. The Story video curriculum will open your eyes to God's master-plan unfolding in the lives of the Bible's characters-and in your own life. Discover the heart of God's Upper Story, and the joy that comes as you align your story with God's. This study highlights key events and people in Scripture to provide the big picture of God s story. Please contact Ven Dawn or the Office for more details. Everyone is invited! And welcome! Thank you to Darla McMeeken, Joanne Cunnington & Shelley Schmidt Clark for the photos in this month s Parish News! Quilters Please join us Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 pm Parish News: the deadline for our next issue is Friday 17 May Please submit articles and pictures about life at All Saints to aspn@allsaintshuntsville.ca With thanks. The due date for articles is generally the Friday 9 days before the last Sunday of the month [so that we have time to prepare and print the newsletter before the end of the month].
7 Outreach We would like to thank all those who supported the Lenten Loonie/Toonie collection. The total collected was $ The handy film canisters used for the collection are becoming scarce and we ask that if you have any empty canisters if you would please consider donating them to us for use next year. Please keep in mind that the Outreach Team has offered to ship clean, warm winter woolies to The Mission for Seafarers by the end of May. Therefore we would ask that you keep this in mind as you assess your winter clothing before storing away and leave any that you would care to donate by the blue piano in Lower Sutherland Hall. These warm clothes are appreciated by Seafarers staying the winter, due to the winter closing of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Thank you. All your efforts are truly appreciated. 8 THE PRIMATE S WORLD RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT FUND: Bicycle Ambulances on the Move. By Simon Chambers They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that s so, PWRDF s partners in Mozambique should be flattered that the bicycle ambulances that they have created, and that have captured the imaginations of Anglicans across Canada, have now been replicated in Asia. As part of a maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) program in Bangladesh funded by PWRDF and the Canadian International Development Agency, PWRDF partner UBINIG has taken the idea of bicycle ambulances and run with it. UBINIG staff really liked the idea of bicycle ambulances, said Zaida Bastos, PWRDF s CIDA Program manager, who oversees the projects in Bangladesh as well as Mozambique. So they took the idea and made it work in their own context. Their own context sounds simple, but is not, because UBINIG is working in 15 districts across Bangladesh, and each district has its own challenges: some are in hill country, others are prone to disasters, still others are know for rampant poverty. UBINIG has worked with local communities, government officials, and traditional birth attendants known as dais to identify and address those local needs. When we build the tricycle ambulances, we need to build for the tallest woman who might need to sit in it, said Palash Baral, UBINIG s Programs Manager, so the tallest woman on the planning team sits in the bed of the ambulance, and they build the frame around her. Baral went on to talk about the need to cross rivers to reach health clinics in Bangladesh a problem that the arid regions of Mozambique don t face. So boats are being built to ferry the tricycle ambulances across the rivers, each one constructed for the river it will serve. Every river has different waves and wind, said Baral. Five tricycle ambulances and two boats were constructed in 2012, and already another four ambulances and one more boat have been built this year. By the end of PWRDF s current program in Bangladesh, each of the 130 dai ghors (maternal health houses) that will service over 500 villages in the 15 districts will have its own tricycle ambulance, and five boats will enable those ambulances to cross rivers on the way. Who knows where bicycle ambulances will appear next! For more information and resources, contact Joy Lewis, our All Saints PWRDF rep; or go to Submitted by Joy Lewis, PWRDF Rep. See more at

11 Y.E.S. of All Saints - Youth Group News Greetings to Youth/Parents: The warmer weather is fast approaching and with the timing of the season, our youth get busier with outdoor school activities and travelling to cottages, etc. The Fun Fridays attendance has slowly diminished, but we continue to be available for our youth and their friends from 7:15 p.m. ( note: start time, slight change) to 9:00 p.m. Please come out, come with your ideas, come with your friends, we need your input. Our Maundy Thursday night/sleepover was very well received with a large crowd of both youth and adults. An evening of salad/pizza/sundae dinner, crafts, evening service and ending with an exceptional night of drumming, with our featured guest BAZZA! What a night! Sutherland Hall resounded with acoustics of percussion that tantalized everyone who participated! We definitely want a repeat performance! Thank you to all who participated and helped with the evening and sleepover. The Ugly Couch Club youth from The Door continue to come for our Friday Night Meals at Sutherland Hall, (or meals provided at their meeting place at The Door). Either way the youth and their leaders really do appreciate our church providing for these youth a hot cooked meal of a "One pot wonder", or the like. Our Outreach Committee and donors have been very generous in providing the funds to keep this program going and James and I are so grateful for the support! However, a few of our volunteers are soon to be unable to commit on Friday nights and so we are in need of a few more volunteers to come forward to help out in preparing a simple meal for about 8-12 youth and their leaders. The youth set up the table and chairs, and do the clean up. We need someone from our church to prepare the meal, or if the meal is prepared ahead of time, then to supervise the meal time from 5 p.m. - 6: 30 p.m. If you feel you could help out at least one Friday night during May or June, please let Joy G. know as soon as possible. 13 John 11:1-16; John 14:1-6; John 20:24-29 friends that they knew the way to get to God as well. It was Thomas who said, We don t know where You are going. How can we know the way? To which Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life. Thomas nickname was doubting Thomas because of something that happened just after Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus appeared to the disciples at a time when Thomas was out. They told Thomas they had seen Jesus but Thomas doubted what they said. So, a week later, Jesus came back and talked directly to Thomas. Thomas fell at Jesus feet and said, My Lord and My God! It s OK to have doubts. Jesus will reveal the truth. Members of the early church, which began just after of the Day of Pentecost, record that Thomas travelled faraway to Iran and to India to spread the good news about Jesus. No longer doubting Thomas, but believing Thomas! Thomas was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus. His name means that he had a twin although the Bible doesn t record who that was. Thomas is first seen during one of the most exciting episodes in the Gospels: a friend of Jesus, named Lazarus, had died. Jesus said that He was going to visit Mary and Martha, two sisters of Lazarus. However, they lived near Jerusalem and Jesus had some trouble with the Jewish rulers there who wanted to kill Jesus. The disciples were quite nervous about returning to that area. But it was Thomas who said, Let us also go to that area even though we may die with Jesus. A very brave attitude! Jesus and His disciples went to Bethany where Mary and Martha lived; it was there that Jesus shocked them, the disciples and everyone else who was there by raising Lazarus from the dead! No doubt Thomas was glad he had made that journey with Jesus! On the night before the crucifixion, Jesus was having His last supper with His disciples; He warned them that He was about to die. Jesus told the disciples not to worry, that He was going to be with God again after He died. Jesus assured His M Q I L Q D E P E P A R V N E E T A M A Z I P E M E G B L T L V K O F Z S S U S E J P A H A G A Y S R A L U X Y I X K O S J N R Z L O R D V C N K T M U Y E I B Q R X U S F H Q Y A R J O B V E D L I S N W C T S E D P J C E V D P H F V I H Y J X N T N O I X I F I C U R C A F I M Z M T L D V C G A J S Y O W P A S J C E Y O M O P L N X T R M K O K Z B D V F D T M V T E I U D O U B T I N G F O H V L G W B S P K X W E T W A H K Y V A R F G O Z T K X Y BELIEVING BRAVE CRUCIFIXION DISCIPLE DOUBTING GOD JERUSALEM JESUS LAZARUS LORD MARTHA MARY RESURRECTION THOMAS TWIN Colouring with thanks:

16 Hebrews Who Wrote Hebrews? It is uncertain. At various times, scholars have thought Paul, Barnabas, Clement, even Priscilla; early Church Father, Origen, said it best Who actually wrote the epistle, God only knows. When was the letter written? Sometime between 60 and 70 AD; in other words, before the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 AD by the Romans. Where Was It Written? Perhaps from Italy. To whom was the letter written? To Hebrew or Jewish Christians. The earliest converts to Christianity were Jews who recognized Jesus as God who tabernacles with His people. [John 1:14] Why was the letter written? To exhort the readers to stay true to their faith in Jesus and not return to Judaism. To teach them the superiority of Jesus over any Old Testament temple, priest or sacrificial system. To encourage those who had u n d e r g o n e persecution. The Letter to the Hebrews Would you rather have the best or second best of a thing? Of course, the best. That is the message of this elegant letter to the Hebrews: Jesus Christ is the best! Do not settle for anything less. The author of this letter explains that although God spoke in the past through the prophets, He has now spoken through His only Son. The author goes on to explain that Jesus is Superior to angels who are messengers of God The exact image of God through whom all things were made [Quoted in the Nicene Creed] Currently sitting at the right [place of honour] hand of God The Son of God whose position, power and authority are confirmed by God through signs, wonders, and miracles. The early Jewish believers were under great pressure to return to an Old Testament way of thinking. The Letter to the Hebrews, in effect says, Why would anyone prefer an old way which As It Is Written [God appointed Jesus] heir of all things, through whom He also created the worlds. [Jesus] is the reflection of God s glory and the exact imprint of God s very being, and He sustains all things by His powerful word. [1:2b-3] Indeed, the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. [4:12] has been replaced by a better way? Although the Hebrews, [especially those who wandered through the wilderness with Moses, and entered the Promised Land with Joshua] did not enter into God s rest, those who follow Jesus may. The author then contrasts Jesus with the Old Testament priesthood, especially the High Priest, the tabernacle and its system of sacrifices. The author s conclusion is that Jesus is superiorin every way. Unlike the priests from the Tribe of Levi Jesus is a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. The Hebrew High Priest had to offer sacrifices each year on the Day of Atonement to cover the sins of the people for the past year. Jesus laid His blood on the true altar of God once; and His sacrifice was completely sufficient to take away the sin of the world. The tabernacle in the wilderness which Moses constructed, was based on the model of the real temple which is with God. Jesus is the head we have [a High Priest] who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. [4:15b] And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgement, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. [9:27-28] Do not neglect to meet together [10:25a] of the real temple not made with human hands. Jesus inaugurated the New Covenant in His blood which is the final covenant between God and His people which supersedes the Old Covenants [Old Testament]. Jesus will come a second time to bring salvation to those waiting for Him. The author then exhorts the Jewish Christians to hold fast their confession of hope without wavering. Chapter 11 of Hebrews is known as the Heroes of Faith chapter. The author highlights several Old Testament heroes Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David and others who showed great faith that God s perfect plan that would come to pass even though they themselves would not see it. Following their example, but more especially Jesus example, the Jewish Christians who were enduring tough times, should run with endurance the race that is set before [them] looking to Jesus. The letter concludes with an exhortation to live a holy life, to share, to obey rulers, to pray. Hebrews is one of the most important letters of the New Testament. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of God. [13:1-2] Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. [13:8]
