Editor s Note April Showers So keep looking for a blue bird, and list ning for his song, whenever April showers come along April Showers is one of my all time favourite songs. It s one of those songs that you find yourself humming or singing when you feel and smell that first warm April rain. The old tunes do that to you. You know the ones. They bring back a memory, a time and place or an old friend or a first love. Songs like: As time goes by, Smile, I ll be seeing you and Stardust. There are many others of course, but the one that strikes a cord with me at this time of the year is April Showers. The music was composed by Louis Silvers and the lyrics were written by D.G. DeSylva for Al Jolson. The song was introduced in the 1921 Broadway musical Bombo. The show did not have much of a story and was really just an excuse to showcase Al Jolson. The lyrics speak to a brighter future. World War 1 had just ended and the hope for better times was a popular theme. Little did they know that in just a few years the Stock Market would crash triggering the Great Depression and many years of hardship. This April, when you feel and smell that first warm April shower, think of these words: Life is not a highway strewn with flowers, Still it holds a goodly share of bliss, When the sun gives way to April showers, Here is the point you should never miss. Though April showers may come your way, They bring the flowers that bloom in May. So if it s raining, have no regrets, Because it isn t raining rain, you know, (it s raining violets) And where you see clouds upon the hills, You soon will see crowds of daffodils, So keep on looking for a blue bird, and list ning for his song, Whenever April showers come along. John Oliver 1

Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family - Alleluia! Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia! This Easter greeting has been exchanged, not just in liturgical settings, but in the streets, homes and workplaces of believers since the very earliest time in the Christian church. The truth of a risen, living and present Lord and Saviour is at the core of our faith. I grew up with these words spoken in Ukrainian each morning throughout the Easter season. The celebration of Holy Week and Easter this year is very different for me because of the unexpected death of my Mother. Thank you for all your thoughts, prayers, phone calls, s, visits, support, care and cards on her death. I felt surrounded and held by your love. Thank you also for the gorgeous flowers that graced the chancel for Mom s service. It was my privilege to conduct her funeral service in the church in which I had grown up, and to celebrate the Eucharist, the sacrament of life, with those who were there - family, old friends, neighbours, people from my former parishes and from my All Saints Parish family. My mother, Anne, was an artist, having done Fine Arts at Queen s; a teacher who, graduated Normal School in 1933 and began teaching in one-room schools. In her career she taught in both elementary and secondary school - her passion was art and teaching Shakespeare and sharing her love of literature and poetry, which she never lost. Over their years, my parents, between them, taught everyone in the town, and beyond that, had a profound influence on everyone in the area. After retiring she and my father, Arthur, were professional community volunteers. In many areas of her life Mom was a pioneer and the fact that her funeral was on International Women s Day, would not be lost on her. My father was Presbyterian and she, Ukrainian Orthodox. Their faith formed the basis of how they lived their lives. They had a living relationship with Jesus Christ, and death was, for them, but the door to eternal life with Him. This is the glory of the Resurrection, the truth which we proclaim this Easter season and the faith in which we live as Christians. Praying that all of us have this same living relationship with our risen Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, I remain, Yours, in His love The Venerable Dawn Henderson Rector

Why Flowers in Church? Floral decoration is as old as civilization. For centuries flowers have been cut and placed in vases of water for people to enjoy. They have been an inspiration for architects and builders, designers and artists. Classic painters and sculptors used flowers symbolically to communicate their message to a non-reading public. In religion, grain, fruit, and flowers were presented as ceremonial offerings to the Divine. Elaborate symbolic values were attached to particular flowers and plants. During the Middle Ages and through the Renaissance, a combination of classical, pagan and Christian themes found expression in this way. Ordinary, unlettered people were close to nature and understood the value and significance of living things around them. Flowers are arranged in churches to help provide a beautiful setting for the act of worship. Those who arrange flowers in church find it is a peaceful act of devotion. Their artistry shows the congregation the loveliness of God s creation in a church setting. Flowers can be more than decoration. Their arrangement can speak of our experience of God s presence in His creation. Colour is used in Worship and is often reflected in the choice of flowers: Blue THE VIRGIN MARY S COLOUR. Used in Advent and feasts of Mary Gold Yellow JOY, HEAVEN. Used for Christmas, Easter, weddings Flowers communicate meaning: Symbolic meanings of flowers varied from country to country, and from age to age. Some symbolic values are shared by most worshippers. A few are: White - PURITY & JOY Great Feasts Christmas, Easter, Feast Days Green LIFE, ETERNAL LIFE, HOPE, GROWTH Epiphany and Sundays after Pentecost. Red FIRE & BLOOD Feast of Pentecost and Martyr Saints Violet Purple REPENTANCE (Lent) and Royalty (Advent.) Black - SORROW. (No flowers) Funerals in older custom. (Now white) Apple Balsam Columbine Crocus Cyclamen Grapevine Lily Rose Red rose Rosemary Violet Original Sin Consolation Virgin Mary s woe Joy Passion of Christ Christ and the Apostles Virgin Mary s flower Purity Divine love, Virgin Mary Martyrs Remembrance Humility Fr. 7 Mrs. Anne Henderson Mrs. Anne Henderson, mother of the Venerable Dawn Henderson and Sidney Henderson died peacefully at the Sault Area Hospital, General Site on Monday March 3, Anne Henderson was a mother, teacher, artist, Christian and community volunteer of Bruce Mines in her 94 th year and wife of the late Arthur Henderson who died May 26, 1993 and was also a well respected teacher and principal of the High School in Bruce Mines. The local school is named after Mr. Henderson. Keeping the promise to her mother, The Venerable Dawn Henderson officiated at the funeral service. The funeral was held at St. George s Anglican Church in Bruce Mines, Mrs. Henderson s home church, on Saturday March 8, The love of god was not only portrayed through every person present but also through the floral arrangements. Incorporated into the arrangement from Dawn and her brother Sidney, were her Mom s paints and paint brushes, her Fine Arts Certificate from Queen s University and her Ukrainian ribboned headdress. Around her shoulders was the prayer shawl from All Saints as well as a palm cross in her hand made by the Altar Guild from All Saints. A beautiful arrangement from a friend of Dawn s was a large palm cross with flowers incorporated into it - it was absolutely beautiful! Other arrangements of flowers adorned the sanctuary including the flowers from All Saints. Dawn began to sing How Great Thou Art and asked for help to sing by placing her hand upon her chest and all of a sudden, the entire congregation erupted in song. I will never forget that moment as everyone sang from the heart and as I looked around the entire church was filled with the Holy Spirit. We ask for your love and prayers for The Venerable Dawn Henderson and her brother Sidney as they grieve the loss of their mother, Anne Henderson. Donations can be made to the Light Haven Christian Home Bruce Mines (where Anne resided for 13 years) or to the Anglican Diocese of Algoma in memory of Anne Henderson. Prayerfully, Joanne Cunnington 5

WARDEN S MUSINGS By Georgi Doyle Contrary to popular belief, I am not crazy. (Yet) Three people who phoned to congratulate me on being elected your People s Warden, began the conversation with Are you crazy? No, I am honored that you think I can do the job with the Lord s help and a lot of prayer. Like you, I have dreams for the future of our parish. The extension of the narthex will require plenty of research and will therefore be well into the future but there are some things that can be done - perhaps this year. We need new signs and our super Property Chairman, Phil Merson and his team have some great ideas. Their recommendation will come to the P.A.C. for approval and your financial support. At the Vestry meeting our Cemetery Board Chairman, Bruce Payne raised the issue of another respectful way to bury ashes. A columbarium was mentioned. He and his Board have done such a caring job at our Cemetery that we will need to give them our support in their decisions. Parishes that I have served in have been close to high schools and were unable to come up with programming for teens or even younger kids. Wouldn t it be great to have a youth worker from All Saints, out and about in town? Another vacation bible school would be an asset too. Could we send some of our young people on a work tour, as the high school is doing? Ours could have a Christian focus. You can probably think of many more ways a youth worker would add to the Lord s work done here. There likely is some funding available and we could make up the balance. Much of this could be done before we get into the expansion. We spend much time keeping our old buildings in good repair. It would be nice to think outside of our boxes and have a greater impact on our community as the saints from All Saints. From time to time, perhaps monthly, I plan to keep you apprised of what is going on with your Wardens and the P.A.C. FELLOWSHIP I am currently finding my feet and fortunately have a very good committee of. Lillian Gallant, Patty Payne, Joanne Bionda and Dana Porter. In our future plans we are considering the following activities: Picnic - Hopefully to be held at Avery Beach where there would be lots of room for children to play safe, have games, BBQ, with help from Parishioners for finance for hotdogs hamburgers, etc, Prizes for kids races, etc. Christmas Party - to be held at Sutherland hall, Cook already confirmed, meal downstairs, entertainment upstairs, would be looking for donations for draw prizes. Robbie Burns - in January with pipe band, Scottish dancers, etc. The committee would appreciate any ideas for events either in conjunction with a fund raiser or just for enhancing parish life. Please contact the undersigned at Pat Merson, Fellowship Team Chair 7

A friend sent me some very interesting statistics - I knew Easter was very early this year, but didn't know it could be the earliest we will ever see. Here they are: Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20). This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar. Based on the above, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March 22) but that is pretty rare. This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see. Only the most elderly (95 or older) of our population have seen it this early and none of us have ever, or will ever, see it a day earlier! Here are the facts: 1) The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this early was 1913, so if you're 95 or older you were around for that. 2) The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now). The last time it was on March 22 was So, no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year! Doug & Dorrie Millikin Church School We are giving the proceeds of the offerings in the Lenten boxes to the Table Soup Kitchen. This is a local group that serves supper meals weekly to those in need of nutrition and companionship. Please try to have Lenten boxes returned as soon as possible after Easter Sunday Thanks! On Palm Sunday, the children participated in an interactive drama, Journey through Holy Week. In keeping with the Lenten theme of Prayer, the children were given a Praying hand doorknob hanger. These are still available in the Church School area. We are continuing to learn new songs that can be incorporated in the Family Services. Other new and exciting things are being introduced at this service come and check it out! JAGs look for the April, May, and June, schedule. Also we will send out the schedules for the Family Services for May 4 th, and June 1 st. Sunday Apr. 6 th : 3 rd of Easter Family Service. This will be the story of Easter. Sunday Apr. 13 th : 4 th of Easter regular classes Sunday Apr. 20 th : 5 th of Easter regular classes Outreach Sunday Sunday Apr. 27 th : 6 th of Easter regular classes Sunday May 4 th : 7 th of Easter Family Service All Saints Church School a place for worship, friends, songs, stories, crafts, and fun! 11 PROPERTY The property team this year will have a new mandate as the Roofing Project is in reality complete. I have been given a couple of projects that should prove interesting to say the least. The first project that is on the books is a new sign down near Main Street by the Lych Gate to identify our Church to the general public and also to advertise some of our events as well as service times. The team will try to come up with a sign that meets all town requirements as well as enhances the aesthetics of our building. I do not know at this time if it will be lighted or not but I do know that a lot of thought will be going into making it vandal-proof as I'm sure it will be, by virtue of the location, a target. The team will be keeping the parish members informed of all designs and layouts to get a good consensus before any construction begins. Anyone who would like to offer an idea or advice please do not hesitate to call me. I'm sure our treasurer will be first in line with his financial advice but in the words of a famous song "we shall overcome". The second project is one that will be one of the Churches most ambitious to date, the revamping of the west end of the building starting with the Narthex. I'm very excited to tackle this project as the scope is limitless. I will be starting slowly with the initial committee being the Rector, Ed Willms and I, this will be just to gather all past ideas, sort them out and establish the basic criteria to form a specific project committee. We will then open the committee up to members of the parish who will be willing to give their time and expertise as I'm sure it will impact on our parish for at least the next decade. The general day to day operation of our three buildings over the past winter has been very good with only minor problems cropping up that our custodians and I have basically been able to handle in house" keeping the financial impact low. Finally if anyone sees an item that needs addressing in the operation of the church property, no matter how small, please either contact the church office during business hours or myself directly as it could mean a quick solution before a major calamity occurs. Phil Merson, Property Team Leader. Letters to the Editor If you would like to comment on any of the articles or reports in your Parish Newsletter, please send your comments to me at john.donna.oliver@sypmatico.ca or put a printed copy in the newsletter folder in the church office. I will be glad to print your views in Letters to the Editor in the next edition of the newsletter. 12 Pastoral Care Nursing and Private Home Visits: There were 4 visits to parishioners who reside at Fairvern Nursing Home over the past month. Two parishioners who reside at Muskoka Landing received visits by members of our team as well. Along with a visit, muffins and cookies were taken to a parishioner who is convalescing after surgery. Three parishioners who are shut in received visits by the team and those visits were accompanied by cookies. There were 5 deliveries of home-made cookies to parishioners who have been shut in due to icy conditions. One of our parishioners received a special delivery of cranberry jam to his residence. One of the pastoral care team members took a parishioner to the All Saints pancake supper and invited another (who was too ill to attend). This same member took another parishioner to the Rogers Cove Valentines Tea. During the tea many of our friends at Rogers Cove received visits. This same member took homemade cookies to a parishioner and his wife. They also delivered the parish news to two parishioners in their building. They had many visits with residents at Rogers Cove which were accompanied by newsletters and church bulletins. Later in the month they took a parishioner to church and then out to lunch. Another visit was made to two parishioners complete with banana-cranberry loaf and lunch. They also took another to lunch and delivered bulletins and Mothering Sunday carnations to two more parishioners. Prayer Shawls: There were two prayer shawls delivered this past month. Muskoka Landing / Fairvern Communion / Rogers Cove Communions: Pastoral care assists Ven. Dawn at the monthly communions. 14 GRANDMOTHERS TO GRANDMOTHERS CAMPAIGN The Huntsville Public Library celebrated 08 International Women s Day hosting the HUNTSVILLE Grandmothers to Grandmothers Group Saturday, March 8 th. with the screening of the film Grandmothers: The Unsung Heroes of Africa. Discussion ensued. In March 2006, on the eve of International Women s Day, the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. The goal is to raise awareness, build solidarity and mobilize support for Africa s grandmothers. Over 180 grandmothers groups have formed in Canada and beyond to support the campaign. (The Huntsville Group began in October 06 out of Trinity United Church.) Since March 03, $17 million dollars has been raised from over 270 grassroots initiatives in 15 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. 90% of contributions go to work projects in Africa. SFL provides grandmothers in Africa with much-needed assistance, including food, school fees and school uniforms for their grandchildren, income-generating projects, counseling and social support, and coffins to allow for a dignified burial of their loved ones. Africa has become a continent of ORPHANS an estimated 13 million children have been orphaned by AIDS and the numbers are expected to reach 20 million by In the midst of this devastation, grandmothers have stepped in to the breech. They bury their own children and then in their 50s, 60s, and 70s begin to parent again, raising their grandchildren with little to no support. In some countries, 40-60% of orphans live in grandmother-headed households. Along with Health Care Providers (when available) the grandmothers teach the child patients/orphans/victims about the drugs they have to take and before they have taken them (for life). STEPHEN LEWIS is featured in The Festival of The Arts Programme this summer, on July 23 rd, at 8:00 p.m. TICKETS go on sale April 1 st. The Huntsville Grandmothers to Grandmothers will certainly be on hand lending their support along with the rest of Huntsville, for this auspicious event! Huntsville Grandmothers to Grandmothers Group welcomes any support in this calamitous cause. Joy Lewis N.B. Individuals from All Saints Outreach Committee and the ACW are members of the Huntsville Grandmothers to Grandmothers Group. Please note that the Seder Supper scheduled for March 20 th will be rescheduled for a date later in April. The date will be published in your order of Service insert. 12
