3 From the Rector... Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family-...take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying always, with all prayer and supplications in the Spirit, being watchful to the end with all perseverance and supplications for all the saints- [Ephesians ] We are surrounded by a great company of saints, praying, and we are who are called to be saints are urged to persevere in prayer for all the saints. The month of November begins with All Saints Day [01 November]. Traditionally, we celebrate our Patronal Festival on the Sunday closest, and so this year, 03 November, we gather with traditional said Eucharist at 8.30 am, and Family Service at 10 am, praying with thanksgiving for all the saints. There are saintly activities for the younger saints, following the service. The following Wednesday [06 November], we gather in the church for the commemoration of All Souls - the day we pray for saints who have gone before us - those we love but see no longer. Please join us to remember your loved ones. Remembrance Sunday is on 10 November. We remember and give thanks to God for saints in the service of God and country - for all those men and women who served, and who continue to serve, our country in war and in peace, in the military and the merchant marine. We will bless the wreath that will be placed at the cenotaph on Remembrance Day. We pray that our world might know true peace. As the Anglicans of Muskoka Deanery gather in discussion and discernment regarding the future shape of ministry in Muskoka, let us pray for mercy, grace, wisdom and God s guidance in all our on-going conversations and decisions. On Saturday 02 November, please join fellow Anglican of the Deanery for a day of prayer at St Thomas Church, Bracebridge: 3:00-5:00 pm with a shared supper to follow. As our Diocesan Strategic Plan enters a new phase, our Bishop has called the entire Diocese to prayer in this time of transition and change. Especially, this month, please keep in your prayers our Diocesan family as the Bishop s Council and the Executive of the Diocese meet later this month [12-15 November] We are reminded of our citizenship in the larger family of saints as we come to support the 10,000 Villages sale [Friday- Saturday, November] and our own All Saints Bazaar and Tea [Saturday, 26 November] in Sutherland Hall. We are all saints together! We give thanks to God for the triumph of Christ in the lives of his saints [BAS page 428]. I give thanks to God for all the saints of All Saints, and I hold you in my heart. Yours, in the love of Christ Jesus our Lord, The Venerable Dawn Henderson + Rector

5 From the Wardens We bring to you today, serious concerns which must be addressed by our congregation. As many are aware, there is a necessary movement within our deanery to come up with ideas about how ministry in Muskoka could be restructured and done differently in response to lack of resources and people. Those who attended the recent Deanery Meeting in Bracebridge were given an overview of a possible proposal for 'Ministry Groupings' in Muskoka. This was a proposal only and those present were asked for feedback. We have now been directed to take this proposal to our various congregations and ask for input from the parish. This is just the beginning of a necessary process which will take a great deal of time, cooperation, wisdom and prayer. By the time you are reading this newsletter All Saints' will have had it's first congregational mtg. (Oct. 27th) to facilitate our discussion. This is just the beginning. To that end, we ask you to pick up the proposal pamphlet from the church or office and watch your , newsletter, bulletin and announcements for the next mtg. date. Your attendance and response is crucial. Unfortunately, the next item to bring to your attention and to again make you aware of is that our recent Treasurer's Report states in no uncertain terms that the financial state of All Saints' Huntsville is in serious trouble. Unless we as a congregation address our deficit of $25,000, our ministry on all levels will be in jeopardy. Expenses have been reduced as much as possible. Please read the most recent Treasurer's narrative for more specifics and prayerfully listen for God's direction. In Serious Concern and Prayer, The Wardens September 2013 Treasurer's Narrative September was another month of a loss of $759. After nine months our loss is $24,325 which is $6,481 higher than budget. WE ARE IN TROUBLE. September's income was $2,174 lower than budget. The major impact was lower offerings. Year to date income is $9,346 lower than budget mainly due to lower offerings. Lower expenses continue to offset part of our lower income. September's expenses were $1,414 lower than budgeted. The major impact was lower diocese apportionment. Year to date expenses are $2,865 lower than budget. Year to date spending was lower as a result of lower apportionment. Our operating account is at a deficit of $22,009. We have to use Memorial Fund and Bequest Fund money to cover the loss. Based on the current trend, I estimate we will end the year with a $30,000 loss which will be $10,000 higher than budget and we will use all of the Bequest Fund to cover the cost. Our ministry is in jeopardy without some change. Tom Peppiatt, Treasurer

9 THE PRIMATE S WORLD RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT FUND LET S TALK ABOUT FOOD (Fred Hiltz) This...month PWRDF will launch a campaign to raise awareness of issues related to food security and seek funds to address them. I encourage every parish across our church to be engaged in this campaign. We have much to learn and we have much to offer. As President of the PWRDF Board and spokesperson for this campaign, I will be starting conversations around the slogans It s all about food and It s good to be full of beans. Insofar as such statements invite comments and provoke conversations about food and food security, I am glad for surely that is what Christ calls us to be about: daily bread or beans or rice or corn, not only for a day but for a lifetime.. PROUD TO PROTECT REFUGEES - Help change the conversation about refugees during a Week of Action from 10 to 17 November as part of the Proud to Protect Refugees Campaign.Turn up the volume of voices talking about refugee protection and refugee contributions in cities across Canada. Let others around you know how refugees enrich our lives and why protecting refugee rights in Canada is a strong tradition to continue. PWRDF Providing Drought Aid in Angola and Namibia Simon Chambers More than two million people in Angola and Namibia have been affected by drought this year. Almost 40% of the population of Namibia faces shortages of water and food, and a collapse in the value of their domestic animals cows are now worth about 10% of their value in 2012 and goats about 50%. After three years of rains so bad they flooded out and destroyed crops, Namibia is now facing its lowest level of rainfall in 30 years. Namibia s rural population relies mainly on livestock and crop production to support their families. The drought has threatened peoples crops and the loss of grazing pastures and water threatens the lives of their animals. See more at PWRDF is responding to appeals through the ACT Alliance, sending $20,000 to the Namibia appeal and $30,000 to Angola. ACT is working to ensure that thousands of people who have been affected the most in these two countries have access to enough food and water, and also begin to be able to diversify their livelihoods and to prepare their communities to respond to future droughts. The Lutheran World Federation, the ACT agency which is leading the projects in both countries For more information and resources, contact Joy Lewis, our All Saints PWRDF rep; or go to

11 A visit to England normally leaves me with warm feelings, from time with family and friends, and with God in the sung Eucharist at St Pauls cathedral. But this time my feelings were more mixed. This was because of a unique mid-atlantic meeting. The morning of September 26th, Beryl and I were having breakfast in the Princess Grill aboard the QM2, when Captain Kevin Osprey came on the PA system to say we had changed course during the night, and were now heading due south. This was the result of a phone call he had received the previous afternoon from someone in Quebec. A 32-year old French Canadian woman, Mylene Paquette, was rowing solo from Nova Scotia to France, and a storm had washed away her sea anchor and damaged her satellite phone. Could we help in any way? After checking with Cunard head office, he had headed for her last known position, and should be in the area around 10 a m. But finding a small rowboat with a five foot swell running was like looking for a needle in a haystack. By 10 a.m. every position on the ship s port side was filed with people. Fortunately for us, our stateroom was on the port side, so we just had to step out onto the balcony. All eyes were looking for a small yellow boat, when, miracle of miracles, between swells, we saw something yellow. By then the ship was almost stopped, and gradually that yellow speck became a boat, with someone standing it and waving like crazy. Using its thrusters, the QM2 steered into a position where the waves were on her starboard side, and, as we came close, a watertight container attached to buoys was put into the water. Apart from 2 sea anchors and a phone, it contained fresh food and vegetables, toiletry articles, and lots of chocolate bars. Rowing like crazy, she finally managed to haul the canister on board, to a tremendous roar from 4000 people on the QM2. After three resounding three cheers from passengers and crew, we slowly sailed away, but not before she had been linked by radio to our PA system. In a voice filled with emotion, she thanked everyone, not only for the canister of goodies, but for their encouragement and good wishes, saying that day was the greatest one in her life. She had been at sea for 84 days at that time, and was only half-way across. She had seen nobody in all that time, now she not only saw the greatest ocean liner in the world, but 4000 people as well. I still find I tear up when I speak of this event. God heard her prayers and answered them in an incredible way. One person can make a difference, even in the lives of the people who were there that day. Not a day goes bye I do not say a prayer for her and for her safe arrival in France. When I think of that woman, alone and at the mercy of the sea and the weather, anything that may be bothering me fades into insignificance. Paul Clayson PS: You can read the transcript of Mylene s conversation with the ship s Captain via CBC.

God you are the potter, we are the clay mold us too, into a vessel of your love to share with others. Again, after the Family Service on Sept. 08 our enthusiastic group of all ages had a wonderful time exploring their creative minds and talent with some times: exploding paint, to create an expression of what they had learned about how God created the universe and, our world and us. Thank you to Darla, Joanne C., Linda S., and those during coffee hour with the preparing of the hot dog and soup lunch. YUMMM! All future Y.E.S. 16 Acts 4:32-37; Acts Silas became Paul s new travelling companion. On one trip, they were in a place in northern Greece called Philippi. They were beaten and thrown in prison. What would you do in such a case? Well, Paul and Silas started singing praise songs to God about midnight! Suddenly, an earthquake shook the prison and the chains of all the prisoners fell off and the prison doors swung wide open. The jailer panicked fearing that all the prisoners had escaped. But Paul calmed him and assured him everyone was still there. The jailer believed in Jesus that very minute! He and all the people in his family were baptized. In the morning, the police who had arrested Paul and Silas came to apologize to them and let them go. Paul and Silas travelled on to another city and continued to preach the news about Jesus. Do you know what your name means? There was a friend of St Paul s in the early church who was given the name Barnabas; his name means son of encouragement because he encouraged and helped others. Barnabas was a good friend to St Paul; he introduced Paul to the apostles, Peter and John. Dr Luke writes in his Book of Acts that Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith. Paul and Barnabas were chosen by God to travel together on a First Missionary Journey to tell people about Jesus. They were welcomed in several cities, but attacked in others. Barnabas and Paul remained faithful to Jesus and did not give up their work. People were made well when they prayed. Just as they were about to start on a Second Missionary Journey, Paul and Barnabas could not agree about taking with them young John Mark [see October 2013]. So, Barnabas and John Mark sailed to Cyprus to teach people about Jesus, while Paul and Silas headed north to preach to other people. Then there were two groups spreading the good news about Jesus instead of just one! Paul & Silas preach Jesus to the jail keeper. 17 Epistle of Jude Who is the author? Jude, who is a brother James and therefore a half-brother of our Lord, Jesus. Notice Jude s humility: he could easily have claimed a superior status within the Church community because Jesus was family. But instead, Jude refers to himself as a servant; in fact, the word he uses means slave. When was the letter written? The letter is thought to have been written in the mid-60s AD. To whom was the epistle written? It is reasonable to conclude that the letter was written to believers quite familiar with the Jewish Scriptures the letter c o n t a i n s m a n y references to the Hebrew Scriptures and other Jewish writings. What was the situation? 30 years after the resurrection, false teachers and members had crept into the church. These were people who interpreted the Gospel to further their own ends. Jude warns the church of the dangers of allowing such people to continue unchecked within the fellowship. J u d e e n c o u r a g e s believers to defend the true Gospel. Jude Jude [Judas, in Hebrew but don t confuse him with Judas Iscariot who betrayed the Lord.] is the brother of James [see June 2013] and half brother of Jesus. The situation Peter had warned about, had come to pass: scoffers had infected the church. Jude had wanted to write an encouraging letter about the salvation that believers share; but he became so alarmed about the situation within the churches that he changed course. He wrote, instead, a strong letter of warning and admonition. False teachers had crept into the church and the church was not taking action. The basic problem was that people knew God s word but decided to follow their own desires regardless. Jude reminded his readers that God had dealt harshly with such behaviour in the past: the rebellion of the Hebrews whom God rescued from Egypt, of the angels who fell with Satan, and of the people Jude in His Own Words contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. [3b] But these people slander whatever they do not understand [10a] In the last time there will be scoffers, indulging their own ungodly lusts. [18] But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your of Sodom and Gomorrah. Even the Archangel Michael was careful not to usurp God s place as the final arbiter. Jude mentioned others who would be judged: Cain for his murderous jealousy, Balaam for his greed, the sons of Korah for their challenge to Moses. What particularly alarmed Jude was that people who were similarly rebellious were being tolerated within the church. Jude calls them grumblers and faultfinders, who are boastful and who flatter others for their own purposes. Such people cause divisions within a congregation. And so what does Jude suggest is the remedy? Pray in the Holy Spirit, keep the holy faith, continue in God s love. But true love of God does not sacrifice God s truth. Jude encourages his readers to be merciful to doubters, to help people who are heading for a faith disaster which will have most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God; look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. And have mercy on some who are wavering; save others by snatching them out of the fire; and have mercy on still others eternal consequences. As St Paul counsels, We war not against not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. [Ephesians 6:12]The temptation is to accept any doctrine because somebody likes it and thinks it credible. However, this little letter of Jude s presents one of the clearest instructions on this matter: the church must accept, contend for the faith once entrusted to her. What an important concept! As early as 60 AD the church understood it had already received the faith. The job of the church is not to twist it to suit the morality of the times; the job of the church is to stand up for the truth already received through Scripture. One of the shortest books of the Bible it took you longer to read this article than it will to read the book Jude is a rousing read! with fear [20-23a] Now to him who is able to keep you from falling, and to make you stand without blemish in the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen. [24-25]
