From the Rector Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family -...to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who, in every place, call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ [1 Corinthians 1.2-3] We give thanks to God for the triumph of Christ in the lives of his saints [BAS page 428]. We, and all who bear the name of Christ, are called to be saints whether on earth or in heaven. We belong to each other because we belong to Christ Jesus - saints together! Let us always be conscious that we are members of a great company of saints. The month of November begins with All Saints Day [01 November]. Traditionally, we celebrate our Patronal Festival on the Sunday closest, and so this year, 04 November, we gather with traditional said Eucharist at 8.30 am, and Family Service at 10 am. There are saintly activities for the younger saints, following the service. The following Wednesday [07 November], we gather in the church for the commemoration of All Souls - the day we pray for saints who have gone before us - those we love but see no longer. Please join us to remember your loved ones. Remembrance Sunday is on 11 November. We remember and give thanks to God for saints in the service of God and country - for all those men and women who served, and who continue to serve, our country in war and in peace, in the military and the merchant marine. At the 8.30 am service we will bless the wreath that will be placed at the cenotaph later that morning. We pray for our world to know true peace. Please keep in your prayers our Diocesan family as the Bishop s Council and the Executive of the Diocese meet later this month [05-08 November] We are reminded of our citizenship in the larger family of saints as we come to support the 10,000 Villages sale [Friday- Saturday, November] and our own All Saints Bazaar and Tea [Saturday, 24 November] in Sutherland Hall. We are all saints together! I give thanks to God for all the saints of All Saints, and I hold you in my heart. Yours, in the love of Christ Jesus our Lord, The Venerable Dawn Henderson + Rector

Warden s Report We must be busy and having a good time because time is certainly slipping by, and it is hard to believe that we are approaching the Advent season and making plans for the Family Christmas celebration. The parishioners of All Saints have been active in the parish as well as in the community. As usual there are many to thank for their efforts. Belated thanks to Joanne Cunnington and her committee for organizing and putting together A Service of Thanksgiving and Song to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday, September 23 rd. Many contributed to make this an outstanding occasion. In particular we wish to express sincere gratitude to Ross Brock and the extended choir for leading us in song during the service. We also appreciate the excellent solos by Ross without a doubt he is able to make that pipe organ sing. At the conclusion of the service in the church, the congregation was piped over to the Parish Hall for a reception. Well done Joanne and committee! No detail was forgotten. THANK YOU to Georgi Doyle for organizing the second annual POW WOW PALOOZA at Pow Wow Lodge on October the 19 th. A fun time and delicious food was enjoyed by all in attendance. A PALOOZA it was! Ask Georgi what that means. Thank you Georgi. BOOK STUDY Somehow in our busyness, some of the book study groups unintentionally got sidelined. In order to make up for lost time we ask that you either individually or in a group of your making (sign up sheets in lower Sutherland Hall) read together or on your own, as much or as little of the book as you are able or have the time for. Hopefully we will gather as an entire group very early in November to determine what we have gleaned from Practicing Our Faith and how we could apply these ideas to our parish. There have been many funerals at All Saints the past few months. In this regard we appreciate all the extra effort from the Altar Guild and Funeral Tea Committee for your service and sensitivity to make these events run as smoothly as possible. We extend Thanksgiving, Praise and Prayer. We are blessed. The Corporation

It s The Same O, Same O! Yes, it s deja-vu all over again. I have served on Advisory Boards in three totally different parishes for the past 50 years. When October rolls around, the same question is raised: How are we going to meet our budget? We Anglicans are forever scrambling to pay our bills and eliminate the deficit. In my Toronto life, I ve seen the Rector send a Warden out to visit a more affluent parishioner, asking for the funds needed to bail the parish out. Each of these churches was active and vital in their communities. We really do serve our Lord. Often I would be asked to address the shortfall on a Sunday at both services. If I had a loonie for each time I ve done that, I could enjoy a fine dinner at Tall Trees. At this Thanksgiving season when we have been given so much and looking forward to the birth of Christ, I shall leave you with the general theme of my Sunday thoughts. Christ is or should be THE priority in our lives. When making your gift lists, at the very top should be All Saints Church, so that we can continue to do His work here in Huntsville and the wider world. by: Georgi Doyle Thank you to Darla McMeeken & Joanne Cunnington for the photos in this month s Parish News! OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Help us send a shoe box to a hurting child. Shoe Boxes are available in the Narthex, at Coffee Hour or in the church office. Don t forget to take a brochure. 7 Bible Study Sundays in Advent beginning 02 December 5:30 pm Light Supper 6:30 pm Bible Study Everyone is invited and welcome! What about the Mayan Calendar? What about the movie, 2012? Will there be disasters worldwide? What does the Bible say? Should I worry? What guarantees are there? Please call the office if you wish to have dinner provided To understand the Bible, says author and pastor Randy Frazee, you need bifocal lenses, because two perspectives are involved. The Lower Story, our story, is actually many stories of men and women interacting with God in the daily course of life. The Upper Story is God's story, the tale of his great, overarching purpose that fits all the individual stories together like panels in one unified mural. The Story video curriculum will open your eyes to God's master-plan unfolding in the lives of the Bible's characters-and in your own life. Discover the heart of God's Upper Story, and the joy that comes as you align your story with God's.

THE PRIMATE S WORLD RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT FUND World AIDS Day: 01 Dec 2012 PWRDF is working with the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Canadian Baptist Ministries, and World Renew (formerly CRWRC) on a project to return AIDS to the table of public concern this year. HIV/AIDS doesn t have to be a death sentence. With support, 3 of every 4 people who came to PWRDF partner Temba House (South Africa) to die have been able to go home and reclaim their lives! Once in a rare moment, civilization has the chance to confound a disease: smallpox vanquished; polio on the brink. Thirty years is enough. Let HIV and AIDS be next. Stephen Lewis Across Africa, the epicentre of the global AIDS pandemic, faith-based organizations are standing together as leaders in their communities. They are breaking the stranglehold of silence and stigma, and providing essential health, educational and spiritual support to people living with HIV and AIDS. They can lead the way, but they cannot do it alone. This World AIDS Day, we invite you to participate in a special World AIDS Day service to raise awareness of the pandemic and highlight the critical role of communities of faith in subduing the ravages of AIDS. It is time to put the AIDS pandemic back on the agenda in Canada. Join those on the front lines who every day turn faith, love and solidarity into action. Because thirty years and thirty million lives lost is enough. For more information and resources, go to Anglican Church of Canada Gifts of Mission This year s edition of the Anglican Church of Canada s Gifts for Mission guide presents ways to give to all of the ministries of the church and features 13 opportunities to support PWRDF programs and partners. PWRDF gifts, ranging from $25 to $600, include food security and the environment, health, human rights, poverty reduction and humanitarian relief/refugees. The guide offers a great way for individuals and groups to donate to the work of PWRDF. See more at Parish News: the deadline for our next issue is Friday 16 November. Please submit articles and pictures about life at All Saints to aspn@allsaintshuntsville.ca With thanks. The due date for articles is generally the Friday 9 days before the last Sunday of the month [so that we have time to prepare and print the newsletter before the end of the month].

Matthew 1, Luke 2:21-52 Jesus is the Son of God, and the son of Mary, and the stepson of Joseph. Although Joseph does not appear very often in the Bible, he is an exceptional man and excellent father. The young couple married. Joseph had faith in God and did exactly as the Lord had told him. Joseph loved his stepson, Jesus, and his wife, Mary. After Jesus was born, Joseph had another dream in which God spoke to him. This time God told Joseph to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt because evil people were trying to kill the baby. Joseph got up right away and without a moment s doubt took Mary and Jesus to safety in Egypt until God told him it was safe to return. Joseph was a carpenter and good provider for his family. He was a religious man he took his family to Jerusalem for the holy festivals as the Jewish faith required. Jesus went missing when He visited the big Temple, but Joseph and Mary searched all over town until they found their child. Mary and Joseph were a young couple engaged to be married; but Mary one day told Joseph that she was already pregnant. In those days, Joseph could have told the entire town about Mary and the way she had betrayed his trust. But Joseph decided to quietly break off their engagement so that Mary would not be shamed before the town. Mary knew that her child was to be the Son of God and that she was not guilty of betraying Joseph. Joseph came to accept that truth when he visited one night by God. God appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him the truth that Mary was to bear God s Son and name Him Jesus for He would save His people. God instructed Joseph to marry Mary. Joseph was a quiet man who was faithful, loving and ready to follow God s direction. 14 Ephesians W h o W r o t e Ephesians? St Paul. Paul had established the Church in Ephesus and had also spent 3 years living, teaching and preaching in the city. When was the Gospel written? Around AD Where Was It Written? Paul wrote the letter from prison in Rome. It is one of 4 prison epistles Paul wrote while he was under house arrest: Philippians, Ephesians, Colossians and Philemon. To whom was the letter written? It is believed that this letter was to the Christians in Ephesus, but was also i n t e n d e d t o b e circulated to other churches in the area. Ephesus was a large cosmopolitan city, and primarily a Greek one. Why was the letter written? To encourage and strengthen the Christians in and around Ephesus as they daily faced the attacks and temptations of the pagan culture that surrounded them. Paul s Letter to the Ephesians This is an era when people around the Globe fear their banks might fail. Paul s Letter to the Ephesians assures Christian believers that they have riches stored up in a bank which can never fail the Bank of the riches of God promised in Christ Jesus and guaranteed by the seal of God s Holy Spirit. The perspective in Ephesians is cosmic. Paul assures his correspondents that they were chosen by God even before the foundation of the world, chosen to be children of God, heirs with Christ. Christians are blessed with every spiritual blessing. They have eternal salvation, redemption from the slavery of sin and grace beyond measure. God revealed His eternal plan to eventually bring all things in heaven and on earth into submission to Jesus. Since believers have inherited this treasure which never rusts, never devalues, never disappears, they should live lives worthy of the Gospel Paul s In His Own Words I pray...the eyes of your heart [may be] enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, [1:18] For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God not the result of works, so that no one may boast. [2:8-9] Live a life worthy of the calling you have received. [4:1b] There is one body and one not gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature but being humble, gentle, patient, bearing with one another in love. And above all, Christians are to maintain the unity of the body of Christ. In typical New Testament fashion, Paul stresses that the Church is not a building it is the body of true believers. Within the body there are different people called to be a p o s t l e s, p r o p h e t s, evangelists, pastors, teachers in order to prepare God s people for service. In Paul reiterates [as he does in other letters] that believers are not saved by good works although they are called to do good works. All must be done in love, in thankfulness. Paul exhorts wives to submit to their husbands although readers often miss the 2nd half of the statement: Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave up His life for Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. [4:4-6]...speaking the truth in love [4:15a] Do not let the sun go down on your anger [4:26b] 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. her. Children and parents, slaves and masters are similarly instructed to treat one another with love and respect as though you were serving the Lord. Given the pagan nature of Ephesian society, it is not surprising that Paul encourages his readers to live carefully to redeem the time...for the days are evil. Paul ends his letter as he began [on the comic level] reminding believers that they are engaged in a battle not one against individuals, but against s p i r i t u a l p o w e r s. B u t Christians have God s riches at their disposal: the full armour of God the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. Armour each Christian should put on each day. The riches of Christ available to each Christian! However, riches stored but never used serve no purpose. Withdraw those blessings from God s bank the supply will never run out. Ephesians is a very brief read 10 minutes but, ah, the rewards! Eternal. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, [c] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. [5:10-13]
