UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA MELFORT ETHELTON PASTORAL CHARGE Office: (306) Website: Worship Time: 10:30 AM Ministers: All of us Lead Minister: Emmanuel Menyereye Music: Tracey Smetaniuk Music Director: Mavis Peters Office Administrator: Denise Todosichuk Caretaker: Faye Greier Today s Greeter: Doug Lyon Scripture Readers: Jean Senecal ORDER OF WORSHIP December 2, 2018 First Sunday of Advent Year C [Service of Holy Communion] WE GATHER AS A COMMUNITY OF GOD S PEOPLE As we gather for worship today we acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty 6 Territory. We honour the Cree and Métis people for whom this place has been a homeland for thousands of years. We respect the sacredness of our home and the ground on which we walk and we are grateful to gather here in peace and hope. ANNOUNCEMENTS, ANNIVERSARIES & CONCERNS: CALL TO WORSHIP: Advent, a time for reflection: we will prepare ourselves carefully and prayerfully for the coming of Jesus. Advent, a time of wonder: God loved the world so much that God sent the wonderful child Jesus. Advent, a time for priorities: in the midst of preparations, the rush and the worry,
-2- the light of Christ will shine through. Advent, a time for inspiration: if God is for the world, with the world, and in the world, what can stop God s people from changing the world? Come, let us open our lives to God. [Written by David Sparks, A/C/E Year C Gathering, page30]. HYMN (VU 215) Hope of the world ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING ADVENT 1C: HOPE Today we kindle the Advent candle of hope. (The first purple candle is lit). We welcome the light that pierces the shadows, the light that affirms God s presence, the light that enables us to move forward in faith. Come, Holy Stranger, beacon of hope on this Advent journey: welcome us as we welcome you. We receive the light of hope. HYMN (VU 6) A candle is burning - Verse 1 OPENING PRAYER: (in unison) In this season, as the days grow shorter and the shadows lengthen, we gather in eager expectation for the Light of the world to dawn. Help us, God, to lay aside all the works of night and even our cynicism as we enter this sacred season. During this hour of worship, send your Spirit to empower us to live in the light with hope. Amen. HYMN (VU 2) Come, thou long-expected Jesus
-3- PRAYER FOR GUIDANCE: (in unison) Let us now confess our brokenness before God. We confess, O God, that we have not always been people who held on to hope. We have given into pessimism and despair. Instead of nurturing new life, we have torn it down. We have wandered away from your path to follow our own. You have broken into our midst time and time again. We would have seen you. But it was easier just to close our eyes and ignore you. God, forgive and have mercy on us! WORDS OF ASSURANCE: Hear the good news. God does not remember our brokenness, our failings, the ways we have wandered away. God s love is steadfast, and God s hope is never-ending! God remembers and forgives us! Thanks be to God! PRAYER RESPONSE (MV 64) Because you came Verse 1 CHOIR ANTHEM: Starry Skies Williams /Dengler WE LISTEN FOR GOD S WORD TO US ESPECIALLY FOR THE CHILDREN: HYMN (MV 166) Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ MINUTE FOR MISSION:
-4- SCRIPTURE READINGS: RESPONSIVE READING: PSALM 25:1-10 (VU p.752): To you, God, I lift my soul. HEBREW READING: JEREMIAH 33:14-16: A righteous branch from David s line. EPISTLE READING: 1 THESSALONIANS 3:9-13: How can we thank God adequately? GOSPEL READING: LUKE 21:25-36: Signs in the heavens and on earth; parable of the fig tree. SERMON: OUR RESPONSE OFFERING INVITATION: Friends, the days are surely coming, says God. I invite you now to be a part of God s good future. Your gifts to the church bring God s vision of justice a little closer to reality. OFFERING: OFFERTORY HYMN (MV 191) What can I do? PRAYER OF DEDICATION: (in unison) Gracious God, we are cautious about so many things. Sometimes our caution masks our lack of commitment. Help us to see our giving as an urgent statement of our faith. Bless these gifts that they might indeed serve God s purposes here and in the world. In the name of the One who is yet to fully come. Amen.
-5- SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION: HYMN (MV 195) Long ago and far away INVITATION TO THE TABLE: The celebration of Communion is always a festival of friends, a pulling together of our loves and our hopes, our moments of agony and our glimpses of victory. It is here, where bread is broken and wine (juice) is shared, that we can most fully be ourselves and see others for who they truly are: sons and daughters of the living God. Here the common things of life bread and wine (juice), memories and dreams, become holy, touched by God. Here that which is earthly become divine, and that which is human becomes more than it has ever dreamed. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. How can we thank you, O God? For sun and moon and stars, for breath and life and all things good, for your steadfast promise and your faithful love, for the day that is surely coming when all things will be made new. With saints, with angels, and with the whole creation, we join our voices to the ancient and eternal hymn: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY LORD, GOD OF POWER AND MIGHT, HEAVEN AND EARTH ARE FULL OF YOUR GLORY. HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST.
-6- BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD. HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST. We give you thanks, Holy God, for Jesus, who came to be your living Word, to baptize us with Spirit and fire, to feed the hungry, to humble the mighty, and to announce the good news of your coming realm. With thanksgiving, we remember how, when the hour had come, Jesus took his place at the table with the apostles. He said to them, I will not eat this Passover again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. Then Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. After supper, he took a cup, saying, This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. I will not drink of the fruit of this vine until the kingdom of God comes. With thanks and praise we offer ourselves to you, sharing this holy meal, remembering Christ s dying and rising, and praying: Come Lord, Jesus! CHRIST HAS DIED, CHRIST IS RISEN, CHRIST WILL COME AGAIN. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us this bread, this cup, these people Christ s body and blood, given in love for the world. Make us one in the Spirit, one in the church, and one with Christ our Lord. Make us gentle, joyful, thankful people, serving our neighbours, worshipping you alone. Keep us in the peace of Christ until you gather us at your table in glory. Even now, a voice is crying in the wilderness: prepare the way of the Lord! Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in
-7- the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour are yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER: BREAKING THE BREAD AND FILLING THE CUP: The gifts of God for the people of God; Come, for all things are now ready. SHARING THE BREAD AND THE CUP: Please say: The Bread of Life as you share the bread. The Cup of Blessing as you share the cup. COMMUNION ANTHEM(S): (MV 202) Bread for the journey (VU 471) Eat this bread and never hunger (VU 469) We gather here (Come, share the Lord) (VU 480) Let us break bread together PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION: (in unison) Gracious God, for the bread of life and for the cup of salvation, we thank you. Allow us to go forth from this table and live as your holy people, rejoicing in the power of your Holy Spirit and walking in the way of Jesus Christ with hope. Amen. SENDING FORTH HYMN (VU 675) Will your anchor hold
-8- COMMISSIONING & BENEDICTION: Go in peace, live in love, and seek to be holy in all that you do. May the God of mercy keep you, the Holy Spirit cheer you, and Christ in glory greet you, now and at the day of his coming. Amen.
