3 From the Rector... Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family, Jesus said, Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also Matthew , We began Lent, this year, as every year with these words of our Lord...and so began this most interesting season. It is a season of forty days [not counting Sundays], which began Ash Wednesday [18 February] and ends with the Great Vigil of Easter [04 April]. For many Christians, the image of a journey is a common one, for, as we answer the invitation to observe a Holy Lent [BAS 282], in self-examination, study and prayer, we embark on a journey of intentional spiritual self-discovery. In many ways, it is a journey to our own heart, helping us discern where our treasure is. It is also a journey to the heart of God for we are His treasure. We have opportunity, with our Lord, to examine our priorities...to begin to discern what it is that holds us or drives us, and whether those things help or hinder our life as followers of Jesus. The journey of Lent is also a journey that leads by the way of the suffering and self-sacrifice of the cross, and the cold silence of the stone-sealed tomb, to the exuberant joy of that same tomb found empty, and the bursting forth of new creation in the resurrection. We end this month with Palm Sunday/Passion Sunday [29 March] and the beginning of Holy Week as we follow our Lord s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and his journey to Calvary. Our Instructional Seder [Tuesday 31 March], which is the Jewish Passover celebration, offers a deeper insight into the Last Supper, and our Lord s command to Do this in remembrance of Me. The Seder will be offered also as a Webinar/Web Conference for those who are unable to attend in person. [Further details will be forthcoming.] The Triduum begins with Maundy Thursday [02 April], and the traditional liturgy at 7 pm in the church. On Good Friday [03 April] we will have the honour of welcoming the Rev d Dr George Sumner, Principal of Wycliffe College, as our preacher. Our journey of Lent culminates in the Easter celebration where we rejoice that God has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1.13 We continue our Lenten study, after Wednesday Services, on the Life and Ministry of the Messiah. Throughout this season, and all of our lives, let us remember that the foundation of everything we do as a church, is prayer. If each one of us would but spend ten minutes a day in prayer asking God s blessing, guidance and grace for the people, life and ministry of All Saints, and for our part in God s Mission, it would revolutionize all of our lives. Every blessing as we journey together in Lent. Yours, in the love of Jesus Christ our Lord, The Venerable Dawn Henderson + Rector
4 From the Wardens Corporation would like to extend sincere thanks to Andy Martinolich for his five years of service as People's Warden. Andy has tirelessly given of his time and energy as an integral part of the 'team'. We are indeed grateful for all of his many, many contributions. We know he will continue to be with us in spirit and walk along side. We thank you Andy. At this time we welcome Hugh Mackenzie into the Corporation in the position of Rector's Warden. We look forward to working with him and having him as a member the 'team'. It was wonderful to have such a large number of people support the pancake supper. Thank you to Andy and the kitchen team for organizing and for their valiant efforts to keep up with the demand. Well done! As we journey through the season of Lent we are reminded of the many opportunities the season offers. A time to pray, cleanse, ask forgiveness, make space in silence taking a time to reflect. We know the time of Lent ends in the resurrection. After Lent, Easter! Let us be grateful as we move toward the time of resurrection. We at All Saints' have much for which we are thankful. In Prayer and thanksgiving, The Wardens DVD Study Wednesdays in Lent 10:30 am noon, Lower Church. Everyone is welcome! Pastoral Care Pastoral care continues with our regular ministries. We are grateful to all of those who support us in all we do. Respectfully submitted, Sue Dixon & Betty-Lou Durr Cover Graphic:

Outside, in the darkness, we light the new fire of Easter. Then, as a body, we carry the new light of Easter into the darkened Church. There, we hear the words of the story of the Exodus and we celebrate our redemption from darkness to light through the waters of baptism as we renew our baptismal vows. 6 Tax Receipts In case some of you are wondering why you received a 2014 tax statement with only you or your spouse s name on it, wonder no more. For a long time now, we have been using a programme called Church Windows to keep track of your givings. It is a very good programme, but it is not cheap, we pay a fee each year to the U.S. company that owns the programme, and they update it as needed. And we have a toll-free telephone number to call for answers to any queries we might have, and they are very good at what they do. Recently they completely rewrote the programme, mainly I surmise to make it more user friendly to the larger churches in the States. The main change was to separate the part dealing with member information (e.g. details of children, dates of birth, information etc., as well as church attendance) from the financial side. In order to do this, the records of givings are recorded only on the family member who had the giving number on his or hers original individual record. They do allow for family groups being put together under one number, but for us that would lead to other problems, and I don t wish to go there! We did not realise the problem until we had run off all the tax receipts. Although we have accommodated a few people who wished to have the receipt in their name rather than in their spouse s name, that involves tinkering with the system so we hope most of you will live with it for this year. To make sure we have our records correct for next year, if anyone would like the number to be changed to their spouse, please send me an at clayson@cogeco.ca, or leave a note with the secretary. Thank you for your understanding Beryl Clayson Envelope Secretary Sunshine Club St Valentine s Luncheon at Sutherland Hall Feb. 10, 2015 Parish News is one of the many ways we communicate with our parishioners: in it we give thanks for events of the previous months, and look forward to the days ahead. 13 John 6:1-15 JESUS and a Bunch for Lunch Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated [John 6:11] Andrew took the young lad to Jesus. And the disciples must have looked at this small boy, and looked at his small lunch, and wondered how they were going to manage. But they didn't have to manage -- Jesus was there. Jesus asked that the people sit down on the grass. Then He thanked God for the food and blessed it and had the disciples serve lunch. And another miracle happened thousands of people were fed! But something else happened that day too. At the end of lunch, Jesus asked His disciples to go around to pick up the leftovers. Leftovers? Yes, there were leftovers. In fact, the disciples picked up 12 baskets full of leftovers, just enough so that each one of them could take a basket home. What do you think the disciples realized when they each had a basket of leftovers? Maybe, that even a little, when freely given to Jesus, can turn in to a lot! There came a day when Jesus was not too far from His hometown of Nazareth near the shores of Lake Galilee. He and His 12 disciples were up on a hill overlooking the lake and a very large crowd had gathered. They had heard about Jesus, about His preaching and teaching, and especially about the miraculous things He had done. Jesus had healed many people who were sick or whose minds were troubled, and He had changed plain old water into wine at a wedding. Anyway, this one day Jesus had been teaching for a while and lunch time arrived and there were no shops or restaurants nearby. But Jesus knew what He was going to do. So He asked one of His disciples, where they could buy bread. The disciples began to worry because they certainly didn't have enough food, or enough money to buy enough food, to feed the thousands of people who had gathered. One of Jesus' disciples named Andrew found a young boy who was willing to share his lunch. The boy had 2 little fish and 5 small loaves of bread, perhaps more like 5 buns or bits of flat bread. It wasn't much but it was all they had! 14 Genesis 12 Abraham Genesis 12 is a pivotal chapter not only in Genesis, but indeed, in all of the Hebrew Scriptures and in the whole Bible. Christopher Wright in his book, The Mission of God, writes, Arguably, God s covenant with Abraham is the single most important biblical tradition within a biblical theology of mission...it generates a vast, arching, trajectory that carries us from Genesis 12 to Revelation 22. The very good Creation of Genesis 1 and 2 descends quickly into the murder, enmity, division and confusion of the following 10 chapters. God s plan is to reconcile the world humankind and all of creation to Himself through Christ; and so He begins His mission again with the call of one man, Abram. God called Abram (whose name means exalted father), a descendant of Noah s son, Shem, to leave everything behind to travel from Ur [not far from Babel/Babylon] to a distant land God would show him. And, in faith, Abram, with Sarai his wife, set out. God makes a covenant, an unconditional covenant, with Abram. A covenant is an unbreakable contract or agreement; in Old Testament times, to break covenant cost one s life. There are such covenants throughout the Bible sometimes they are between neighbours or nations but the critical covenants are between God and His people. There are seven such covenants in the Hebrew Scriptures (some would say five) and the promise of an eighth--the "new covenant" which would be inaugurated by Jesus at the Last Supper. Although humans did, at times, break covenant, God never did never could because it is not in God s character to be unfaithful. God, in what is known as the Abrahamic covenant, makes promises: that God will make Abram a great nation with inumerable descendants, that He will bless Abram such that through him all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, and that God will give Abram the land God shows him--the "Promised Land". God calls this as an everlasting promise: it never expires; it is never rescinded. In this covenant, God does more than make promises to one man; He outlines His program of redemption for the world, indeed, for the whole cosmos. Abram and his descendants would be blessed so that they could become a blessing in order that all the nations would be drawn to the one true God. In Old Testament times, the common phrase was "to cut covenant". There were a number of steps ancient peoples enacted in covenant ceremonies, and some of these steps are evident in Genesis 15. There was an exchange of coats indicating an exchange of identities (one's status was obvious from one's outer cloak). Then the covenant partners took off their belts. (Belts held up one's weapons, not one's pants! And this step indicates that each partner will come to the defense of the other.) God tells Abram He is Abram s shield in effect, Abram needs no other weapon because God will protect him. There was an exchange or taking on of names (as some women take on their husband's name in marriage). And each party made a cut in his flesh and their blood mingled. The terms of the covenant were read: I promise to do this and you promise to do that. And then the covenant was cut or ratified but cutting at least one animal lengthways. The two halves of the animal were flopped open and the covenant partners walked the blood walk between the parts of the animal. The message was, in effect, You may do to me as it has been done to this animal if I break covenant with you. Then the participants share a meal. The last action was planting or building a memorial [a tree or pile of stones] to leave a physical witness to the covenant. Knowing that background helps make sense of the peculiar events of Genesis 12 through 17. God makes an unconditional covenant with Abram: God makes all the promises (land, offspring and blessing); God's keeping those promises does not depend on anything Abram will, or will not, do. In fact, God puts Abram into a deep sleep for the actual ceremony because it is God who makes all the promises. God instructs Abram to "cut" five animals. (In Hebrew numbers, five is the number of grace) and guard them until dark. In his God-induced sleep, Abram witnesses the ceremony. God takes the place of both covenant partners-- in the Hebrew mindset, no one can see God and live--and so Abram sees only a smoking firepot and a flaming torch which take the "blood walk" between the pieces of the animal carcasses. [Recall the cloud by day and pillar of fire by night as the presence of the Lord went with the Hebrews through the wilderness.] In Genesis 17, two more aspects of the covenant ritual occur: God changes Abram's name to Abraham [father of a multitude] and Sarai's to Sarah [perhaps, mother of nations]. And the sign of this new covenant was to be circumcision for Hebrew males. Then God re-iterates that Abraham and Sarah will have a son. At this, Abraham falls flat on his face in laughter. He is 99 and Sarah not far behind. Who wouldn't laugh! And it is from the line of this unlikely couple that centuries later a little baby will be born in Bethelem thus, through Abraham, in Jesus, the whole world is indeed blessed. St Paul wrote, And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s offspring, heirs according to the promise. [Galatians 3:29]. God is able, and God is faithful to keep His covenants His promises.
