From the Rector... Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family- All your works praise you, O Lord, and your faithful servants bless you. They make known the glory of your kingdom and speak of your power; That the peoples may know of your power and the glorious splendour of your kingdom Psalm In the words of the Nicene Creed, We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of that is, seen and unseen. [BAS p 188]. The Psalmist writes The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork [Psalm 19.1]. This year our Church School will follow the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum, which begins the year with the account of creation. At our Back to School Family Service on 08 September we will celebrate the wonder and glory of God s creation. Because of humankind s rebellion, we live in a fallen world. Jesus, who is God incarnate, came to redeem all of creation. In the Gospels, His teaching and ministry demonstrate the kingdom of God - the restoration of God s rule. By His death and resurrection he inaugurated the new creation. And, If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; [2 Corinthians 5.17]. That is good news!. At our Family service we will be introduced to our new gathering song for this coming year. This year we saints are going to sing, shout, praise and share the good news of Jesus love in the world! Our faith calls us, in word and in action, to live life sharing the love God has for us, shown in Christ Jesus, within our church community and beyond ourselves, in the world, As the Muskoka summer draws to a close, the summer visitors whom we welcome into our midst, return home. The unique ministry of the 10-week summer congregations around us wraps up and those of us who have taken opportunity for time away, return home. I give thanks to God for the Rev d Judie Cooper who assisted with Sunday services, and the Rev d Don Clark who assisted with Wednesday chapel services, in my absence. I give thanks to God, also, for all the saints who, during the summer, and all through the year, continue faithful in the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ in, around, and through this parish. We return to our rhythm as a parish. On 22 September we resume The Story. You are all invited to join in our discussions as we explore God s story which is our story [Sundays after coffee hour]. We continue with suggestions and recommendations from our Parish Assessment. In broader terms, following input from Deanery Council in May, a Task Force is looking at the Deanery as a whole and at different models of ministry for Muskoka. We will hear more of this at our next Deanery Council meeting [15 October] On Sunday 29 September, you are invited to a concert by John Sand, as he shares his musical gift and talents with us. Come, with family and friends to enjoy the music and the reception following. Maker of the universe, Source of all life, give us grace to serve you with our whole heart, that we may faithfully perform your will and joyfully participate in your creation, to the praise and glory of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. [BAS p 909]. Yours in the love of Christ Jesus our risen Lord and Saviour, The Venerable Dawn Henderson + Rector

From the Wardens Where did summer go? It is hard to believe that Sept. is fast approaching. Hopefully everyone has had a restful, relaxing summer with time to enjoy family, friends and the bounty of God's goodness and creation. Please carefully ready your Parish News for upcoming events as well as creative initiatives planned for our parish. Plan ahead and mark appropriate dates on your calendar. Renovation of ASH continues. New roof, new interior design, new electrical and plumbing systems and drywall has been completed. This past week interior painting was finished. Shortly, we hope to have an open house for the congregation so that we can all appreciate the time and effort that has gone into this renovation and spread the word about the amazing new office space to rent in the heart of Huntsville (with the best view in town!). We will keep you posted. Thank you to the many volunteers who filled a variety of roles during the summer months when some of our regular members were on vacation. It has been wonderful to welcome many visitors into our midst during the time Rev. Dawn was on a much needed vacation and we were graced with the ministry of Rev. Judy Cooper. Join with us now as we step into the 'normal' rhythms of fall. May we continue to work together as a church family in a spirit of love and acceptance as we uphold the name of Christ in our church and in our community. Submitted in prayer and thanksgiving, The Wardens PALOOZA III Friday 18 October 2013 at O Meara Golf Club STARFISH SALE For Sale: One pine chest with 7 drawers in mint condition. Parish News Online - The full colour edition of Parish News is available online at As told by John Sands: My ministry It is recognized that music can have the power to soothe and uplift. We understand also that God communicates with us in various ways. When music is orchestrated, arranged and performed through the sensitivity that comes from within a loving and receptive spirit - and is an offering of gratitude and love to God - I believe it becomes a potent voice that God would use to inspire peace and well-ness to weary and disquieted hearts. It is my prayer always, that God would use me through the gift of music which he has given me. May the peace of God s love dwell within you. Parish News: the deadline for our next issue is Friday 20 September Please submit articles and pictures about life at All Saints to aspn@allsaintshuntsville.ca With thanks. The due date for articles is generally the Friday 9 days before the last Sunday of the month [so that we have time to prepare and print the newsletter before the end of the month].

Outreach Welcome back after a wonderful but cool busy summer. It is time to think and plan ahead now for the fall. We always try to support the council of the North Harvest Festival Celebrations. Please watch for those special envelopes for your kind donation. The Rev Swayze will be speaking to us on October 20 th, to tell us of the important work of the Mission to Seafarers, Thunder Bay. We will start collecting clean warm winter woollies which you no longer need nor wear for the Seafarers who stay the winter due to the closing of the St. Lawrence Seaway. These boxes are sent by bus late October or early November, but maybe Rev. Swayze might have room in his vehicle to take some with him if we have some ready!!?? A letter has been received from the Samaritan s Purse, about Christmas Shoe Boxes for children around the world. Watch for them in the lobby. They are fun to fill. We continue to support Christine s Place with baby layettes (which are greatly appreciated) our Star Fish families and The Food Bank. We look forward to hearing more about a Men s Shelter for Huntsville, which is really needed. And we are also investigating project plans for Tanzania. THANK YOU, EVERYONE, for supporting all we try to do and suggestions are welcome. Blessings to all, The Outreach Team Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can! ~ John Wesley ALL SAINTS ACW MEETING will be on Monday, September 16, at 1:30 p.m. in Lower Sutherland Hall. We are looking forward to our first meeting of the new season; all ladies of the Church are welcome please join us we are always looking for new ideas and new friends.

To understand the Bible, says authors and pastors Randy Frazee and Max Lucado, you need bifocal lenses, because two perspectives are involved. The Lower Story, our story, is actually many stories of men and women interacting with God in the daily course of life. The Upper Story is God's story, the tale of his great, overarching purpose that fits all the individual stories together like panels in one unified mural. The Story video curriculum will open your eyes to God's master-plan unfolding in the lives of the Bible's characters-and in your own life. Discover the heart of God's Upper Story, and the joy that comes as you align your story with God's. This study highlights key events and people in Scripture to provide the big picture of God s story. Please contact Ven Dawn or the Office for more details. Everyone is invited! And welcome! Several people from All Saints' took part in the Workshop -"Tale Upon Tale: Stories That Tell Truth" and Storytelling for the Soul given by Rev d Lynn Uzans in Gregory on Tuesday August 13. It was a great day and nice to see Lynn again.

THE PRIMATE S WORLD RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT FUND Sharing the Sacred Gift of Water By Simon Chambers Anglican and Lutheran youth led an event on Parliament Hill calling attention to water issues in Indigenous communities at Joint Assembly. Water is a powerful sacred symbol for Anglicans: from baptism to the Eucharist, it plays an important role in our life of faith. For Indigenous people in Canada, water is also a sacred gift from the Creator. Often for PWRDF, water is a key to programs access to water is a basic necessity of life that is too often missing in communities around the world. As part of its Connections program, PWRDF is working to bring these three understandings of water together through the Pikangikum water project. Through the Advent Conspiracy, a group of parishes in the Toronto area and beyond began to raise funds for a water project in a Canadian First Nations community, and approached PWRDF and Bishop MacDonald for suggestions of how and where such a project could be completed. They have already raised over $36,000 of their $100,000 goal for Thus was born the Pikangikum water project. The Pikangikum First Nation is a community of about 2200 people located about 100km north of Red Lake, Ontario. It is an impoverished, isolated First Nations community where basic necessities of life are absent. Running water and indoor plumbing do not exist for most residents, according to a 2010 report on youth suicides in the community. See more at The project will provide water and wastewater systems to 10 homes in the Pikangikum community, providing a cistern for drinking water, a wastewater holding tank, and the necessary fixtures and fittings, as well as providing training to four residents in plumbing skills to maintain the water system. PWRDF is working with the Frontiers Foundation, a non-profit aboriginal voluntary service organization that promotes the advancement of economically and socially disadvantaged communities. Frontiers Foundation is successfully using the Anglican financial commitment to raise from other donors to raise the additional $115,000 needed to complete the project. For more information and resources, contact Joy Lewis, our All Saints PWRDF rep; or go to Submitted by Joy Lewis, PWRDF Rep. On August 10 at coffee hour the congregation thanked Rev d Judie Cooper for sharing her ministry with them for the weeks while Dawn was away, by giving her some flowers and sharing a cake with her.

Colossians 4:14; 2 Timothy 4:11; Luke Acts Dr. Luke was hired by a man named Theophilus to research and write a careful account of the life of Jesus and the growth of the early church. Dr Luke was an excellent choice someone who was used to asking questions, investigating events and making careful notes and observations? Luke was a Christian who had travelled with St Paul, who knew St Peter, and who had seen for himself the miraculous growth of the church? Luke wrote his account in 2 parts: the first is called The Gospel of Luke, and the second is called The Book of Acts. Both books are full of wonderful accounts, dramatic events, and accurate details. We don t know very much about Luke himself because Luke wants his readers to focus on God, on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, and on the work of the Holy Spirit. After His resurrection, Jesus told His followers to go into all the known world to tell everyone about Himself and about how much God loves them. So the disciples told people close to home and those far away about God s love in sending Jesus to save them. Luke was one of the people who heard about Jesus and so became a Christian. Luke was a Gentile which means he was not Jewish. He was part of the new Christian church which grew by leaps and bounds as the disciples travelled and preached with the help of God s Holy Spirit. When one of the apostles, St Paul [see last month s edition of Younger Saints] reached the place Luke lived, Luke decided to travel onward with Paul. [See The Book of Acts beginning in chapter 16 for the exciting account of their travels.] Luke was a faithful friend to St Paul. Near the end of Paul s life, he wrote to Timothy that Luke stayed with him in Rome even when other people had abandoned him. 12 Peter Who the author? Peter was a commercial fisherman by profession who left everything to follow Jesus. Peter is perhaps the best known of the 12 disciples of Jesus. The Book of Acts verifies he ministered in Jerusalem; eventually, he travelled to Rome the 1st Bishop of Rome. He was martyred by Emperor Nero around 67 AD. His letters were written in Greek, [the common language of the Empire since the time of Alexander the Great]. As was common during the era, Peter seems to have used a secretary Silvanus to take dictation of the epistle. When were the letters written? 1st Peter, was written around AD from Rome [Babylon]; 2nd Peter, some time later. 2 Peter is sim ilar t o a f are well discourse. To whom were the epistles written? 1st Peter was written to believers living t h r ou g ho u t Asia Minor [roughly, modern day Turkey]. 2nd Peter appears to have been written to the same churches. Interestingly, Peter mentions [among others] the churches in Pontus, Asia and Cappadocia witnesses from these same areas were present on the Day of Pentecost [Acts 2]. W h a t w a s t h e situation? In the early days of the church, persecutions tended to be regional and sporadic. And, as always, the dangers arise 1st & 2nd Epistles of Peter In his first letter, Peter confirms that the salvation promised in the past through the prophets is fulfilled through the coming of Jesus Christ. Peter s letters reiterate an injunction common throughout both the Old and New Testaments live a holy life. Being a Christian is like the difference between a wedding and a marriage: a wedding, like believing in Jesus, takes only a few minutes; a marriage, like living the Christian life, takes the rest of a lifetime. The early Christians faced harassment and persecution and yet, Peter exhorts them to conduct yourselves honourably so that non-believers will give glory to God. There s the hard part, isn t it? Giving all the credit and glory to God rather than keeping it for ourselves. Peter, as do all true followers of Jesus, points not towards himself, but towards the Saviour. Peter encourages his readers to accept a u t h o r i t y a n a s t o u n d i n g exhortation considering that the Roman ruler of his day was Nero crazy, cruel and anti-christian! Peter in His Own Words God...has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading [1 Pe 1:3-4] So get rid of all evil behavior...deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. [1 Pe 2:1] have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9 Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the Peter counsels his readers to be ready to give a reasonable account of their faith. If anyone asked us what we believe and why, could we answer? Peter reminds that the end of all things is near and so Christians should maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. [1 Pe 4:8] Peter advises the recipients of his letter to watch out for the true enemy Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. [1 Pe 5:8] Peter cautions against those who try to reduce the Gospel to advice-for-good-living and the biblical record as mere myth. In his second letter, Peter reminds his readers that he [along with James and John] were with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration. They were eyewitnesses: they saw what transpired and they heard the voice of God confirm Jesus as My Son, My contrary, repay with a blessing. [1 Pe 3:8-9] Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to b r i n g y o u t o G o d. [1 Pe 3:18] Cast all your anxiety on God, because he cares for you. [1 Pe 5:7] make every effort to support your faith with goodness, a n d g o o d n e s s w i t h knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and selfcontrol with endurance, and Beloved with whom I am well pleased. In his straightforward style, Peter tells it like it is : God will judge the ungodly but will also rescue the godly. Trials may almost certainly come; but Jesus is the model of how to endure them. T h e i m m e d i a t e c o s t o f discipleship may be high, but the eternal benefits are astounding! Peter encourages Christians to not be discouraged or confused because Jesus has not yet returned: with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. Every day is one day closer to Jesus return. Salvation through Jesus Christ is Good News indeed; but many of the early Christians faced trials and, sometimes, martyrdom. James, the brother of John, and countless others had been killed for their faith. Peter himself was crucified shortly after he finished his 2nd letter history records he requested to be crucified upside down because he did not think himself worthy to die in the same manner as had the Lord. endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual [f] affection with love. [2 Peter 1:5-7] The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. [2 Pe 3:9] But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the d a y o f e t e r n ity. Amen. [2 Pe 3:18]
