3 From the Rector... Rejoice in the Lord, always. Again, I say, Rejoice! Philippians 4.4 Dear Members of All Saints Parish Family - Joy is inseparable from the power of the Resurrection. Before his crucifixion, Jesus reassured his disciples that their grief over his death would turn to joy [John 16.20]. He said to them: I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. [John 16.22]. William Temple wrote: The joy of Easter, once truly experienced becomes a pervading atmosphere which the soul thenceforth breathes forever. May we live, always, in the joy of the resurrection. There is much in which to rejoice this Easter Season. Diocesan Synod takes place in Sault Ste Marie 4-7 May. Please keep in your prayers the Bishop, Clergy and lay delegates of Algoma who come together to discuss the faith and workings of our church. On 15 May [Sunday afternoon 4:00 pm], we celebrate the 400 th Anniversary of the King James Version translation of the Bible. As well as being the first Authorized English translation of the Word of God, the KJV has been called one of the finest works of English literature and remains, 400 years later, a best seller. Its influence on the language and culture of the English-speaking world is immeasurable. We Anglicans have been known as people of the Book, and this is the Book!. We rejoice that our Bishop, the Rt Rev Dr Stephen Andrews, will be with us, sharing his faith and scholarship. Our Bishop will be back with us again on 26 June for a service of Confirmation.. I am thrilled at the opportunity to meet together with seven young people and one adult as we prepare for confirmation. Please keep in your prayers, Abby, Carly, Claire, Grace, Grace, Jonathan, Marina, and Ruby. Let us all rejoice in this next step in their journey of Christian faith. In the months ahead, there will be evenings of discussion [with popcorn] around various movies of Heroes of the Faith, ranging from Wycliffe to Bonhoeffer. Stay tuned for details. There is much in which to rejoice as we journey forward together as Christ s body at All Saints, knowing that the joy of the Lord is our strength [see Nehemiah 8.10] Praying for all of us the transforming power and joy of our Lord s resurrection in our lives, I remain, I AM He who lives, & was dead, and behold I AM alive forever more! [Rev 1:18] Yours, in His love The Venerable Dawn Henderson + Rector

6 Sunday 15 May :00 pm Service of Celebration of the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible with The Right Reverend Dr Stephen Andrews, Bishop of Algoma The year 2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the creation of the King James Version of the Bible, arguably the greatest piece of Literature and most influential book in the English Language. King James I had an uncanny love of beautiful things, including language to stir the soul. With several inferior English translations in use across the Kingdom, the Puritan leader John Rainolds took his opportunity to suggest that a new, more accurate translation was needed for the people. With the new King s blessing, a committee of 47 professors began the daunting task of creating a translation that was accurate, acceptable to all, and beautiful enough for the king! While Shakespeare s rich language lit up the stage, this committee penned a beautiful translation that would bring new life to the churches. Coming Soon!
7 February 1, 2011 The Ven. D. Henderson All Saints Anglican Church 30 High St. HUNTVILLE, ON P1H 1N9 Outreach Mission to Seafarers - Lakehead Branch Suite 450, 100 Main St., Thunder Bay, ON P7B 6R9 Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you can. Motto of John Wesley from The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. Dear Dawn: Thank you so very much for your Parish s financial contribution for our work at the Seafarers Centre. It was processed 31-Dec-2010 and a Donation Receipt and a certificate to recognize your donations are enclosed. We hope that you will display our certificate. If you donate to us again in this calendar year, and your donation exceeds $250, we will send you a plaque. Your on-going support ensures that the Mission cares for seafarers in the Port of Thunder Bay, and our Chaplain, Rev d Ed Swayze, and volunteers assist seafarers who are strangers to our city. It helps us provide the Seafarers Centre as a sanctuary for seafarers and our services are offered to all seafarers, foreign or domestic, regardless of religion or race. Christians are encouraged in their faith and those who are not of the Christian faith receive the hospitality of Christ. In 2010 the Centre was open 120 days and 695 seafarers visited us. Internet usage is up as is the sale of phone cards. We took care of the Centre; like your home it needs to be taken care of it and you want it looking good for visitors. We reviewed our use of inside space, reorganized it, purchased some tables for laptops, and installed a projection screen. We painted the exterior of the Centre and found that some of the window frames were rotten. As a result volunteers replaced two windows and more windows and doors are planned to be replaced in Our 1981 van has relatively low mileage (94,900 km) and is in fairly good shape, however, it needed work, $1,500 was budgeted for van repairs and $2,228 has been spent. Parts wore out and were replaced: tires, heater core, exhaust system, starter relay, speedometer and brake hoses. A van is a vital part of our ministry; enabling seafarers from across the port to be brought to the Centre, taken to shopping or driven on a tour to Kakabecka Falls. As a donor, you become a Friend of the Mission to Seafarers, are put on our /mailing list and receive a newsletter once or twice a year. Friends are entitled to a vote at the Annual General Meeting, scheduled for March 16, We send an eletter out several times a year to those that have given us their address, which gets our message out while keeping costs down. Please visit our web site, which keeps you informed about vessels visiting the Port and the Port tour page gives you a sense of our port and celebrates the marine community in Thunder Bay. Contact Rev d Ed Swayze if you have questions about the Mission to Seafarers, at He would be happy to arrange a tour of the Seafarers Centre or a talk about the Mission to Seafarers. Sincerely, Brad Yeo, Treasurer Katharine Ford 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. 10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 8 PWRDF Responds in Japan through the ACT Alliance In the month since the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami devastated northeastern Japan, Anglicans in Canada have generously donated $88,371 to PWRDF towards the relief effort. PWRDF has been in conversation with the Anglican Communion of Japan (Nippon Sei Ko Kai) about how best to aid their efforts in responding to the disaster. We have also responded to the Church World Service (CWS) appeal through the ACT Alliance. ACT is a global coalition of 112 churches and agencies engaged in development, humanitarian assistance, and advocacy. When disasters like the Japanese quake occur, ACT contacts member agencies who are working on the ground in the affected country to determine needs. ACT then contacts all its members to apprise them of the situation and the needs. PWRDF has responded to CWS s appeal after the Japanese quake. The video below from CWS talks briefly about the needs and the difficulties in responding. PWRDF, through its membership in Canadian Churches in Action (CCA), has received a grant from the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation to further aid the work of CWS in Japan. Questions for Candidates in the Canadian Election The upcoming Canadian election on May 2 provides a fantastic opportunity for supporters of PWRDF to speak with candidates in their ridings about the importance of Canada s involvement in sustainable community development around the world. The Primate s World Relief and Development Fund is proud to have been working with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) since PWRDF encourages all Anglicans to ask candidates as they meet them, or at All-Candidates Meetings, the following two questions: 1. How do you see your government strengthening the Canadian International Development Agency s ability to deliver development and aid? 2. What role do you see for Canadian Civil Society Organizations in delivering development and aid together with partner CSOs overseas? Please make sure to mention the following as you explain your reason for asking: I am a member of the Anglican Church of Canada I support my Church s work in development and aid through PWRDF I want to see the government of Canada supporting Civil Society Organizations in continuing to enable sustainable community development through CIDA. A Civil Society Organization (CSO) is defined by the World Bank [ as follows: "the term civil society [refers] to the wide array of non-governmental and not-for-profit organizations that have a presence in public life, expressing the interests and values of their members or others, based on ethical, cultural, political, scientific, religious, or philanthropic considerations. Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) therefore refer to a wide array of organizations: community groups, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), labor unions, indigenous groups, charitable organizations, faithbased organizations, professional associations, and foundations". Please Suzanne Rumsey [srumsey@pwrdf.org] to let PWRDF know what response you hear from the candidates you talk to. Thank you for continuing to support the important work of PWRDF! Joy Lewis 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Matthew 25

Like everything else, the expenses for the production of the Parish News are increasing and presently are $ per month. This matter was discussed at PAC and it was decided we should offer the parish an opportunity to help offset these costs. Perhaps you would consider one of the following ways: 1. Sponsor a Month - perhaps in memory of a loved one, or as a thank offering. 2. Make a donation in honour of a birthday of a family member or friend. or to celebrate an anniversary 3. 13 Can Anything Good Come From a Committee? Do you have a copy of the King James Version of the Bible? You re not alone. Worldwide, there are over 1 billion copies in print. If you owned an original, you could afford to buy any house you wanted marks the 400th anniversary of the KJV and we are pleased to celebrate this remarkable edition which has remained the gold standard of English translations in many denominations. But when it was first published on the 2nd of May 1611, the King James Version [KJV] was far from popular! A little history: The Old Testament was written [primarily] in Hebrew, and the New Testament [primarily] in Greek. St Jerome translated the Bible into Latin in the early 400s AD. Caedman [675], the Venerable Bede [700s] & Alfred the Great [900] had translated portions into Old English John Wycliffe translated the Bible into Middle English around 1382 William Tyndale translated the New Testament into English 1525, and was burned at the stake for his work. Miles Coverdale [1535] finished Tyndale s work and the result formed the basis for The Great Bible which King Henry VIII put into every parish Church in This is the translation used in the Book of Common Prayer. The Geneva Bible of 1560 was the favourite of Calvinists [Puritans, Presbyterians] By the mid 1500s, the Reformation movement had grown strong in Europe; and many English Reformers fled to the Continent. One of the hallmarks of the Reformation was an insistence that each person be able to read the Bible in his or her own language. In Geneva, Miles Coverdale, John Calvin, John Foxe, John Knox [Scottish Presbyterian] and others began a new translation of the Bible. This Bible, which was 90% Tyndale s translation, was known as the Geneva Bible of It was the first Bible to contain verse numbers as well as chapter divisions; and it also contained marginal study notes which were decidedly Calvinist that is, anti-catholic, anti-anglican and anti-monarchist. This Bible remained hugely popular for almost 100 years and is the Bible quoted by Shakespeare! James I The beloved Queen Bess, Elizabeth I, died in 1603, and since she had never married or had children, she was succeeded by the son of Mary Queen of Scots [her half-sister], James the VI of Scotland who was crowned James I of England. James was immediately thrown into Church politics [how unusual, eh?]: the Reformers and Puritans wanted him to approve the Geneva Bible, while the traditional English clerics preferred the Great Bible. Catholic clerics elsewhere preferred the [badly flawed] Douay/Rheims translation. James very wisely came up with another option: commission a new translation. In 1607, James assembled an impressive team of 50 scholars who worked separately and then together for 7 years using Hebrew and Greek sources, as well as other translations and scholarly works. The King had the Authorized Version [The King James Version] published in 1611; however, it took many years for people to come to accept it over the Geneva Bible. King James had prohibited the addition of marginal notes so that no one could bias the reader he preferred to let the Word of God speak for itself. The KJV of 1611 became an enduring work in an age when religion mattered to almost everyone in a way that is difficult to appreciate today. When people believed in God and what the scriptures taught, Christian beliefs were part and parcel of daily life. It mattered what was taught and understood. It mattered what people really believed. It influenced their lives, their attitudes their actions from the highest in the land to the lowliest man or woman. The KJV had an enormous effect on peoples lives; its beautiful language and terminology may seem archaic today but it was the everyday parlance of ordinary people and its language became entwined into English literature over many generations, not just in England but wherever the Bible was carried into what has become the English-speaking world and is with us today. Sarah s Dinner [Can you find all 36 famous phrases from the King James Bible?] Sarah decided to give a dinner party for family and friends, and she sent out many invitations three score and ten to be precise. Her husband, Jack, was worried. It ll cost us a fortune, he said. Sarah replied, Well, it s better to give than to receive. So let us eat, drink and be merry while we re about it. Anyway, as you sow, so shall you reap! Jack protested, Man does not live by bread alone. Besides, why invite Great Uncle Tom he s as old as the hills and at his wits end. He ll barely make it by the skin of his teeth if he s got any left! And as for that wayward brother of mine talk about a man after his own heart. Can t see why we should waste good money on him. Am I my brother s keeper? Oh come on, Jack, retorted Sarah, that s just sour grapes. No it s not. He was always his father s favourite, the apple of his eye, until his fall from grace. Shows what happens when you spare the rod and spoil the child. Ha! How are the mighty fallen. Can a leopard change his spots? Not him and feeding him would be casting pearls before swine! Sorry, Jack, said Sarah, but it s time to stop this eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth attitude. Blessed are the peacemakers. For everything there is a time and a season, and I for one think it s time to be reconciled. After all, love covers a multitude of sins and he is your own flesh and blood. I know he s been a thorn in the flesh at times, but that doesn t give us the right to cast the first stone. Besides, these days he might be the salt of the earth. Jack realised that he wouldn t win an argument with Sarah until the day he gave up the ghost. So he changed the subject back to the food: So how are we going to cater for this lot? That s the root of the matter. Sarah replied, Yes, that is a bit of a fly in the ointment. But we could do a casserole there s a chicken in the freezer. A chicken? One chicken? I know a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, if all these folk turn up we ll need to lead a whole lamb to the slaughter. Besides, last time you did a chicken casserole, it was literally a baptism of fire came out of the oven as a burnt offering. Talk about ashes to ashes, dust to dust! In which case, snapped Sarah, you can enjoy watching your brother bite the dust! Oh, very funny! said Jack. What about drink? No problem there s plenty of gin and tonic to go round for starters, a case of wine in the cellar, and a large bottle of malt for afters. So then, said Jack, to sum up, the booze is great but there s only one measly chicken. I see what they mean when they say the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. And Sarah laughed. 15 1 Samuel 9 31 Part 2 In the King James Bible, which is the best loved English translation of the Bible, the opening line of David s most famous song is The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Throughout his life, King David wrote beautiful poetry and songs. We can still read many of these in our Bible because David s songs became part of the Hymn Book of the time. We call that book of the Bible, the Psalms. In a newer translation of the Bible, the Psalm reads, The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of Lord my whole life long. me all the King David played a small harp. Perhaps we can picture him in his beautiful cedar house singing praises to God, trusting in God for safety and protection even though there were people in Israel who didn t like David. A Jewish Scroll & a Star of David God called David, A man after My own heart. King David wasn t a perfect person [only Jesus is perfect] but he loved God with all of his heart. From time to time David made serious mistakes, but he always repented, telling God he was sorry, and relied on God to forgive him and help him correct his ways. On God rests my safety and my honour; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.
