Editor s Note The Easter Egg The egg is nature s perfect package. It is the universal symbol of Easter celebrations throughout the world. It has been dyed, painted, adorned and embellished in the celebration of its special symbolism. Before the egg became closely entwined with the Christian Easter, it was honoured during many rite-of-spring festivals. The Romans, Gauls, Chinese, Egyptians and Persians all cherished the egg as a symbol of the universe. From ancient times eggs were dyed, exchanged and shown reverence. In Pagan times the egg represented the rebirth of the earth. The long hard winter was over; the earth was reborn just as the egg miraculously burst forth with life. The egg, therefore, was believed to have special powers. In Rome it was customary to bury an egg under the foundations of buildings to ward off evil, and Roman women carried an egg on their persons to foretell the sex of their unborn children. French brides stepped upon an egg before crossing the threshold of their new home. With the advent of Christianity the symbolism of the egg changed to represent, not nature s rebirth, but the rebirth of man. Christians embraced the egg symbol and likened it to the tomb from which Christ rose. The earliest Christian history of the Easter egg tradition is found approximately 50 years after Jesus resurrection. Bright red-colored eggs were simply exchanged as gifts as a symbol of continuing life and Christ s resurrection. The red color was an intentional Christian tradition commemorating the blood of Christ. The red Easter eggs in Christian history were originally used when two friends met on Easter day. The two friends would tap their eggs together and one would greet the other with the words Christ is Risen! and the other would respond, Christ is Risen Indeed! Then the eggs were eaten in fellowship. Decorating and coloring eggs for Easter was the custom in England during the Middle Ages. The household accounts of Edward 1, for the year 1290, recorded an expenditure of eighteen pence for 450 eggs to be gold-leafed and colored for Easter gifts. The most famous decorated Easter eggs were those made by the goldsmith Carl Faberge. In 1883 the Russian Czar, Alexander, commissioned Faberge to make a special Easter gift for his wife, the Empress Marie. This special egg so delighted the Czarina that the Czar promptly ordered Faberge to design eggs to be delivered every Easter. Happy Easter to you all, John Oliver 1

From the Rector... Dear Members of All Saints= Parish Family - AChrist, our Passover is sacrificed for us, therefore let us keep the feast, not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.@ 1 Corinthians At the very core of our Christian faith is the Cross and the empty tomb. The celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the culmination of the entire Church year - it embodies the whole meaning of Christian life and faith!. It is the defining moment in time, in history and in eternity. The season of Lent is preparation. Our focus deepens in Holy Week, as we walk the way of the cross. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of Holy Week, three of the clergy you hear from Sunday to Sunday, will share their journeys of faith. On Thursday, we recall the Jewish Passover celebration in our Seder Supper..At the Passover table Jesus transformed, forever, the bread of affliction into the bread of life and the cup of blessing into the cup of salvation. The Great Three Days [known as the Paschal Triduum] begins with the evening Eucharist of Maundy Thursday [20 March]. This is a celebration of the Last Supper. There Jesus gave a new commandment : AThat you love one another as I have loved you... by this, will all know you are my disciples if you have love for one another.@ [John ]. This is the law of love, symbolized, in the service by the washing of feet. [If you serve others, in the name of Jesus, or desire to, come and have your feet washed.] The law of love is the litmus test of our Christian life: How do we think about one another? How do we speak about one another? How do we treat one another? On Good Friday [21 March] we gather at the cross, meditating on our Lord=s victory over the power of sin and death. We come, acknowledging our sin and hearing his words of forgiveness from the cross. When Jesus said AFather, forgive them, for they know not what they do@ [Luke 23.24], he was speaking to the Father about us! The Great Vigil of Easter, on Saturday evening [22 March], is the culmination of the journey of Holy Week, and the beginning of the celebration of the Lord=s Resurrection. The service is vivid and dramatic. We gather in darkness and enter the church with the new light of Easter. This is the Christian Passover for it celebrates the passing of our Lord Jesus from death to life, and, in Him, our passing from darkness to light, from sin to grace, from slavery to freedom, from death to life -The Triduum closes with the liturgies of Easter Sunday [23 March]. We echo the ancient response AAlleluia! Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia! The transformation of our lives is possible only through the cross and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. AIf anyone is in Christ Jesus, that one is a new creation; old things have passed away, behold all things have become new@ [2 Cor 5.17]. It is our very identity as Christians - those who have died to sin with Christ Jesus, who accept what he has done for us on the cross, are risen to newness of life in Him. At the end of the Triduum, let us ask ourselves : Are we different? Are we transformed? This is our central and greatest celebration! This is the Passover of the Lord! The journey from the triumph of Palm Sunday to the triumph of Easter Sunday is the way of the cross. This is the journey of the whole of Holy Week, and I invite, and urge, each one to participate as fully as possible in all aspects of the worship at All Saints= during all of Holy Week. Praying for all of us the transforming power of our Lord=s resurrection in our lives, I remain, Yours in the love of Jesus Christ, our Lord, The Venerable Dawn Henderson Rector If you, or anyone you know, are unable to attend any of the Easter services listed, and would like to receive Home Communion, please contact me to arrange a date and time for a visit.

Do You Accept Jesus Christ As Your Lord & Saviour? When we last saw King Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, they had moved quickly to sever ties with the Church in Rome and proclaim, through the Act of Supremacy of 1534, that Henry was Supreme Head of the Church of England the Anglican Church. Henry remained primarily Catholic in his beliefs: has was head of a catholic church in England, although the Pope didn t see it that way. Cranmer was moderately Protestant in his thinking and he tried to steer this new Church gently toward Reform thinking. Cranmer was the first Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury and perhaps the first [legitimately] married Archbishop. Beginning in 1536 Cranmer carried out Henry s orders to have a copy of The Great Bible placed in every Church in England. But he wasn t just the King s man. On several occasions, Cranmer spoke up in defense of those who fell out of favour with the King Wolsey, Sir Thomas More and Thomas Cromwell. But above all, Cranmer believed that his loyalty was to God and the monarch. It was perhaps this that ultimately caused his own downfall, but more of that next month. The Death of Henry VIII 1547 On his deathbed, Henry called for Cranmer and the Archbishop is reported to have asked, Do you acknowledge Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? If you do, squeeze my hand. Cranmer never revealed whether the King did. Edward VI ascended to the throne in 1547 at age 9 and he died before he was 17. Edward was the son of Henry and Jane Seymour, Henry s third wife. Edward s Protector was his uncle, Edward Seymour, a staunch Protestant. Not surprisingly, the Church moved swiftly and inexorably toward Protestantism. Cranmer published a Book of Homilies [Protestant-leaning sermons] which were to be read each week in every Church. Edward VI In 1549, Cranmer wrote the The Book of Common Prayer [which remains the official prayer book of the Anglican Church of Canada. Indeed, for over 400 years, Cranmer s beautiful prayers were one of the common elements in all Anglican Churches worldwide.] There is little doubt that the BCP was the crowning achievements of Cranmer s career. Its eloquent language and sound doctrine are the very fabric of Anglicanism. One of the tenets of the Protestant Reformation is the conviction that the Bible is foundational to any Christian life; this conviction drove Cranmer to include much of the Bible in the BCP: each week included a Gospel and Epistle reading, and the prayers were Biblically based. The BCP is the Bible in devotional form. This was completely revolutionary in Renaissance England considering that fewer than 25 years earlier, it had been illegal even to own a Bible in English. Henry brought the English Bible into the Churches, but Cranmer put the Bible into the people s hands and brought it into people s homes. Book of Common Prayer "Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust." ALMIGHTY God and merciful Father, who wouldest have the kingdoms of the world become the kingdom of thy Son Jesus Christ: Bestow thy blessing, we beseech thee, upon all who labour for peace and righteousness among the peoples; that the day may be hastened when war shall be no more, and thy will only shall govern the nations upon earth; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. "I take thee to be my wedded wife (or husband), to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part." Phrases such as all one's worldly goods, at death's door, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, land of the living, like lost sheep, tender mercy, to lead a new life. Want to know more? Read Cranmer s Book of Homilies or investigate the history of the BCP at Thomas Cranmer born; 1534 Act of Supremacy; 1536 Great Bible in Churches; 1547 Henry VIII dies; Edward VI King; 1549 Book of Common Prayer; 1552 revision of the BCP
Reports and Announcements Shrove Tuesday s pancake supper was a great success. Thanks to the cooks, Winston, Darrel, Jim and Ted... and to all those that pitched in to help. So why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday? Marj Payne has submitted the following History of Shrove Tuesday article that sheds light on this annual event. Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras or fetter Dienstag) is the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Since Lent is a time of abstinence, traditionally of meat, fat, eggs and dairy products (one wonders what was left) Shrove Tuesday s menu was designed to use up all the fat, eggs and dairy products left in the kitchen and storeroom. It is also a feast to prepare for the time of famine in the desert. In some cultures, it is traditional to eat as much as possible on Shrove Tuesday, sometimes up to 12 times a day. The English term Shrovetide (from to shrive, or hear confessions) is explained by a sentence in the Anglo-Saxon Ecclesiastical Institutes translated from Theodulphus by Abbot Aelfric (q.v.) about A.D. 1000: In the week immediately before Lent everyone shall go to his confessor and confess his deeds and the confessor shall so shrive him. He then may hear by his deeds what he is to do in the way of penance. In many traditions, Lent is a time for cleaning, in preparation for Easter and spring. First your soul, then your kitchen, then the rest of the house was cleansed and purified of the past year s accumulations. Old clothes are mended, and new clothes purchased at this time of year. In the Ukraine, houses were whitewashed inside and out during Lent. In this way, everything was made ready to face the season of Salvation and Rebirth. Traditions of spring cleaning stem from this religious observance. A Grace to Say Before You Eat O GOD, You are the giver of every good and perfect gift. We know how easily we take and how we resist giving. Give us the gift of grateful hearts, So that we may joyfully share with others all you have given us. AMEN. Adapted from a grace used at St. Paul the Apostle Monastery, Palm Desert, Thanks Marj 4

News from Betty OUR BEQUIA, ST. VINCENT CONNECTION A letter was received recently from Janet Goodridge following the death of her husband, The Rt. Rev. Sehon Goodridge. retired Bishop of the Diocese of the Windward Islands. Bishop Sehon's death was unexpected, he had been admitted to hospital with pneumonia Dec. 23rd, and suffered a fatal heart attack Dec. 27th. Janet taught at a private school in Barbados prior to her marriage to Sehon, and following his retirement, they moved to Barbados. We were luncheon guests at their home in St. Vincent during one of our visits. Bishop Sehon's ashes are interred in the graveyard of St. George's Cathedral in St. Vincent. Janet's closing comment is - "Please thank the congregation of All Saints' for their condolences and prayers." Some of you will remember the story of Antonio Haynes, the young lad who was brought to Hamilton from St. Vincent ten years ago for burn surgery, following an accident with home-made fire crackers. Antonio, is now 23 yrs old and driving taxi. His mother Jasmine works in the Lewis Punnett Home for indigent seniors, and sister Tammy is in last year of high school. She is the first of Jasmine's four children to attend high school, so mom is justifiably proud of her, and we are all hoping she passes her CXC exams giving her access to College, which fortunately is located close to their home. Jasmine and Tammy telephoned this week to thank us for funds sent so that Tammy could have her eyes checked and get her first pair of glasses. When we hear of situations like theirs, we remember how blessed we are to live in a country where we have free government insurance, and where most of our NEEDS are met. Gaynor Kydd, whom our A.C.W. sponsored throughout her high school years on Bequia, is also 23 yrs. of age, and in the Royal Navy, stationed in Somerset, awaiting a two-year posting to her ship in April. Amos Hanson, whom many of you know, is married with two children, living in Sault Ste. Marie where his family is staunchly entrenched in Holy Trinity Church. He works in the computer department of a local health clinic, and Alice, on maternity leave since May, goes back to work in April, as a registered nurse in the local hospital. Wonder if you were fortunate enough to have seen Grease? It was absolutely fantastic! The kids put so much into it - voice, band, acting, dancing, gymnastics, you name it! And it was exciting to see two of our All Saints' young Servers involved. Conner McCaskill who had a major part as Doody, and Elizabeth Kitching as one of the Pink Ladies, with Louis Tusz as Music Director, Sherisse Stevens as Assistant Music Director, and Gunnar Christensen on Set Construction. Everything about it was well done, and they got a well-deserved standing ovation. Congratulations to our High School and everyone connected to the production of Grease. Betty Fulton. 6
Church School The Lenten Boxes are being given out as we continue through Lent. We are looking at giving the proceeds to the Table Soup Kitchen. This is a local group that serves supper meals weekly to those in need of nutrition and companionship. In Lent, we are thinking, and learning about Prayer and our next section of the curriculum focuses on stories about following Jesus. The children will receive a bracelet and other reminders of these themes. We are continuing to learn new songs that can be incorporated in the Family Services. Sunday Feb. 24 th : 3 rd in Lent. It was necessary to have our Family Service on this Sunday, rather than on Mar. 2 nd. The people involved will be contacted. We are switching the duties from Mar. 2 nd to Feb. 24 th. Please see revised schedule or pick one up in the Church School area. Sunday, Mar. 2 nd : 4 th in Lent and "Mothering Sunday". In the English tradition, Simnel cake will be served. Sunday Mar. 9 th : 5 th in Lent - Regular classes Sunday Mar. 16 th : Palm Sunday. This year Palm Sunday falls at the end of the school Winter Break. Unfortunately "Rosie" the donkey will not be available for our procession. Also, we will probably have winter conditions at this time. So, we will have our "Journey Through Holy Week" in the Church School area. The stations will be set up and the children may wear costumes to participate in the story of "What Happened to Jesus". Join us for the waving of Palm branches and to peek into the empty tomb. Thurs. Mar. 20 th : Maundy Thursday Youth sleepover and vigil. Catherine West will have more information to follow. Fri. 11 Every year near the time of Easter, Jewish people celebrate a holiday or festival called Passover. It recalls the time thousands of years ago, when God powerfully freed the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. We can read about this Passover in the Bible book of Exodus. Part of the Passover celebrations involves a special supper called a Seder years ago, Jesus celebrated a Seder with His disciples the night before He was crucified. We call this meal The Last Supper and we celebrate it every week in our service of Eucharist [Communion]. What happened at that very special Seder? CANDLES The woman who was the head of the household lit the candles Perhaps Jesus mother Mary or perhaps Peter s wife] WASHING The Seder began with hand washing. The Bible tells us Who may go to the house of the Lord? The person with clean hands and a pure heart. Jesus added something quite unusual he also washed the disciples feet! Washing feet was a job usually done by a servant. Jesus was showing them about loving one another. UNLEAVENED BREAD To think of the Jewish people who escaped from Egypt, Jesus disciples at the Seder ate only unleavened bread which is flat. They remember that when the people left Egypt they did not have time to wait for the yeast in bread to rise and so they ate flat bread. The bread which is called Matzah was broken into 3 pieces and 1 of them was Hidden. At supper with His friends, Jesus said a very unusual thing when he broke the matzah bread This is my body which is broken for you. And Jesus gave His disciples a new commandment Love one another. LAMB Jesus and His disciples ate lamb to remind them of the lamb sacrificed by the Jewish people in Egypt. Those people put some of the lamb s blood over their doors so that they escaped the plagues sent to the Egyptians. TELLING THE STORY Children play a very important part in a Seder because they ask questions such as, Why is this night different from all other nights? The questions prompt the adults to re-tell the story of the escape from Egypt. Colour from
THE CUP OF BLESSING At their Seder, Jesus and His friends would have had 4 very small cups of wine likely mixed with water. The Jewish people remember that all things come from God including vines and grapes. Whenever they drank from the cups, they would have said this blessing Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine. When Jesus came to the last cup of wine after the meal, he again said a very unusual thing Whenever you drink this wine, do it in remembrance of me. GRACE AFTER MEALS Do you say grace before meals? Well, at the Last Supper Seder, Jesus and His friends would have said grace twice once before, and once after the meal. A SONG TO FINISH At the end of the Seder, Jesus and the disciples sang a song of praise to God. This is called the Hallel which means Praise God. We say a similar thing when we say, Hallelujah! Jesus and His disciples perhaps sang Psalm 118:24 This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. And when they were finished their Seder, they went to the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus was arrested. THE SAME AND YET DIFFERENT After Jesus rose from the dead on Easter morning, His friends must have thought about their Seder with Jesus. In many ways it was the same as all the other Seders they would have been at throughout their lives. And yet, in other ways it was completely different. Being with Jesus changes everything! 13 All Saints Food bank February Update Our Food bank continues to be an important part of our outreach to our community, Last year through your donations we supported 23 families with 67 food requests in the community as well as our 6 Starfish families. We are able to provide this valuable service through the generosity of many of our parishioners and the Men s Breakfast group. The donations of food and money are much appreciated. Even though we use the name Food bank we do help out by providing other necessities. We are always in need of laundry soap, facial tissue, bathroom tissue, cleaning supplies and sandwich bags. Over the last month or so we are seeing a lot of younger families using our food bank. Their needs for their children are usually items such as: juice boxes, pudding cups, fruit cups, and granola bars. Our stock of items such as cereals, soup and beans is plentiful. At this time we could use pasta sauce, canned meats and fish, canned fruit and vegetables and mayonnaise. We have a small freezer that we can store fresh meat products like ground beef, chicken, sausages and pork chops which are always welcome. Thank you for your past generosity. Those who we assist are very grateful for our help. God Bless, Linda Peppiatt ACW - NEXT MEETING will be on March 17, 1:30 p.m. in Lower Sutherland Hall. As it is the beginning of Holy Week, we will gather to share Lenten readings and prayers. All the Church ladies are invited to bring your own special short reading and/or prayer; come and bring a friend.
