2 March 8, 2015 GUIDELINES FOR LENT The time of Lent is to be observed by Catholics as a special season of prayer, penance and works of charity. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, in particular, are the most important penitential days of the liturgical year. They are days of both fast and abstinence. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. The rule of fasting states that only one full meal a day can be taken. Two small meals, sufficient to maintain strength, are allowed, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals breaks the fast, but drinking liquids does not. The rule of fasting obliges all Catholics from 18 to 59. Abstinence refers to the eating of meat. The common estimate of the community is used to determine what falls under the category of meat. The rule of abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years or older. The substantial observance of the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious obligation. Self-imposed fasting on the other weekdays of Lent is recommended. Abstinence on all Fridays of the year is also highly recommended. Parents and teachers should see to it that, even those who are not bound by the laws of fast and abstinence because of age, are brought up in an atmosphere that is conducive to a sense of penance. HUNGERING FOR A SEASON OF HOPE The next stop on our CRS Rice Bowl journey is the African nation, Niger, where we re reminded that life s joys and challenges are often seasonal. This week we pray for people who struggle to feed their families during the hungry season when food is in short supply and we commit to acting for the common good. The annual Catholic Relief Services Collection will be taken next weekend, Sat. & Sun., Mar. 14th & 15th. Please visit (search CRS Collection) to learn how your donations make a difference and help Jesus in disguise. JOSEPH S HOUSE Greetings! We have some exciting things going on at Joseph s House. We now offer clothing vouchers to some of the local thrift shops and will be offering a Babysitting class and CPR/First Aid class through the Red Cross this month, to some of the families we serve. These classes are made possible through the support of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Williston. Our hope is that these classes will not only provide good life skills, but also help our clients with useful certifications to aid in their job searches. Lastly, a great big THANK YOU to Christ the King School in Burlington for doing a hygiene item drive for Joseph s House. What a great turn out in donations! We appreciate your support! God Bless, Chelsea Beauregard, Director CHITTENDEN COUNTY RIGHT TO LIFE Will meet on Tues., Mar. 11th in St. John Vianney s Parish Hall, 160 Hinesburg Road in So. Burlington from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. New volunteers are always welcome. Please contact chitrighttolife@gmail.com for more information. CEMETERY NEWS Price Update for Cemetery Products and Services Effective Feb. 1, 2015 On an annual basis we review our product and service offerings along with our fee structure to be sure we can continue to maintain and operate our cemeteries in a proper, safe and respectful manner. It is important that a family seeking a Catholic burial with limited resources understands we can review any fees, if needed, to meet their needs. Peter Beauregard, Superintendent Mt. Calvary Cemeteries Saint Joseph Cemetery
