2 From the Pastor s Desk Thank you all who have made our Halfway to Hugh possible! I believe that the event was a success! We will print the actual figures once they are available! All was possible because of the people who helped last Saturday! A special thanks goes to Chris whom I had to ask to add the event to the parish calendar almost at the last moment (shortly after I moved to St. Hugh parish last July). I felt then though, that it was a mandatory addition for the St. Hugh calendar at the time. The parish expenses need to be covered and events like that may be helpful. Also big thanks to all who have made this event possible by working hard before, during, and after the event. Our envelope stuffers: Theresa & Jenna Our Kitchen, Serving, & Dessert Table Help: Dave, Jamie, Cliff, Rosemary, Nicki, Sue S, Arlene, Kim, Marilyn, and Graciela Our Bartenders: Tina, John, & Nora Ticket Sellers: Theresa & Sue K Our Setup Help: Confirmandi & their parents, Jamie, & Arlene Our Cleanup Help: Confirmandi & their parents, Maria, and all the above who stayed to help To all of our wonderful bakers, thank you for the tasty treats. Thank you everyone! Sorry if we missed someone, there were so many volunteers who stepped up and helped, we could not keep track! Congratulations winners of our raffle! $1000-Opal Sarpy $500-Sandy Oberoi $300-Joann Gallion $100-Arlene West $50-Les Antos $25-Danielle Fary I hope that everyone who came to take part in that evening enjoyed the time and left happy. I have heard mostly pleased comments about the fest. We are glad that several sponsors came aboard helping us to even think about doing it this year. There are some new ones feeling energized to be added to that group. We are open for the new ones joining this noble movement! With enough support, we may repeat it next October. Yours in Christ, Fr. Robert Marchwiany, Pastor. Mass Intentions When a priest celebrates Mass each day, he offers each celebration of the Eucharist for a particular person, or intention. 6 The Punch Line The first reading is supposed to remind us of Solomon, choosing wisdom over wealth or power. In the scriptures wisdom means doing God's will in all things. As Jesus tried to tell the man in the gospel, knowing and doing God's will is more precious than wealth, or even family! So if wisdom is that good, why do so few seek it? Most of us have no problem doing God's will, as long as it is the same as ours. Or we do God's will if it is painless and convenient. Sometimes we are like that man in the gospel, desiring wisdom but not willing to pay for it. Maybe our problem is that we don't trust God enough. The first reading, after praising wisdom more than health, wealth, and beauty, ends with a promise of "countless riches" while Jesus promises that the one who gives up everything will receive "a hundred times more." Because the rich man left in sorrow, he missed the punch line. I can think of two ways to interpret that promise. One is that the more we give up for love of the Lord, the more we get back. The other is finding that what truly makes us happy is knowing we are loved by God and responding with love for others. --Tom Schmidt, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Treasures from our Tradition They say that it is not so much that Columbus discovered America, but rather that after he arrived, the new world "stayed discovered." The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other "discoverers" lacked. One of the oft -mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixthcentury Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to "the Isle of the Blessed" in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. Five centuries after Brendan, other Irish monks may have visited here as a refuge from Viking terror. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. (MARK 10:25) Jesus uses tough language that we may not want to hear. But, we are all called to be generous with all our gifts. Not just the ones we pick and choose, but all our gifts: our time in prayer to God, our talent in participating in parish ministries and our treasure supporting our local parish and other charities. Vincentian Reflection In today s Gospel, Jesus says: Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then, come follow me. Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Second Collection The Second Collection is for the Needs of St. Hugh Parish. 10 Anointing of the Sick October 27, 2018 at the 4pm Mass Who should be anointed? The rite of anointing is part of a book called Pastoral Care of the Sick. Extreme unction means last anointing, and that term has been discontinued in favor of a broader term - the pastoral care of the sick. The document says, Great care and concern should be taken to see that those of the faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age receive this sacrament. The sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after being anointed and then again falls ill or if during the same illness the person s condition becomes more serious. A sick person may be anointed before surgery whenever a serious illness is the reason for the surgery. Elderly people may be anointed if they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. In short, anointing prays for recovery. If you re gravely sick, the time has come to anoint. The church gladly offers its pastoral care as freely as it can.
