1 April 1, 2018 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord Easter Season Sacramental Celebrations First Holy Communion - 10:30am Mass Sunday April 22 Confirmation - 10:30am Mass Sunday April 29

2 From the Pastor s Desk ALLELUIA Welcome to all who worship here on this our holiest of days. Parishioners, relatives, neighbors, visitors, all friends of Saint Hugh let us rejoice as we pray with and for one another. ALLELUIA Blessings and joy at the beginning of this Easter season. The bulletin cover reminds us of the upcoming seasonal sacramental celebrations. Our festival of fifty days will culminate liturgically with the celebration of Pentecost on May 20. ALLELUIA April 1 is also the feast day of our parish patron, Saint Hugh of Grenoble (see the bottom of page six of this bulletin). While not celebrated liturgically this year, because today is most importantly Easter Sunday, this is still a fitting opportunity to seek his intercession for our parish. See page five of this bulletin for details about the Society of Catholic Women s NEW Spring Event on Saturday April 28. Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Father Reszel MCCJ THANK YOU The Comboni Mission Center would like to give thanks to the Parishioners of St. Hugh. We were overwhelmed by your kindness towards Fr. Jose Manuel Garcia Oviedo, both during his stay at the LaGrange Park Mission Center, and during his final days with us. Fr. Jose sincerely appreciated all those who attended his farewell Mass, and he was overwhelmed by the amount of people who reached out to him, as he prepared to move on to his next assignment. We are thankful for the many years he spent in La Grange Park and for all the wonderful people and friends he made, especially at your Parish. The Comboni Mission Center will continue to keep the people of St. Hugh in our prayers. combonimissioncenterlgp.wordpress.com ENCOUNTER THE RISEN CHRIST We prayed, fasted and gave alms and now we celebrate Easter joy! Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl ends as we encounter our Risen Lord. We reflect on our brothers and sisters we have walked with, and we commit to bringing Easter joy to each person we meet in our daily lives. If you have not yet done so, Rice Bowls may be returned to an usher at your earliest convenience. Thank you! Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Risen Lord Jesus, The news today seems to be dominated by deathdealing forces and foreclosed possibilities. This past year has brought us a plague of gun-violence, streams of helpless refugees in different parts of the world, struggles in our own nation around questions of immigration and racism, countless victims of natural disasters, and large numbers of people who are in the words of Pope Francis - discarded. There seems to be scant room for hope and optimism. Yet, we know by our own experience as believers and our common bonds of faith that this is not the full story of reality. There, indeed, is other news, the good news of our Easter faith. Christ has conquered all death and evil. Christ is risen! When we profess our faith in the risen Lord, we do not deny the pain and suffering at work in our world. The risen Christ himself bears his wounds of his suffering, but he is risen. He has conquered sin and death, and our victory is certain. We hold a great hope in him who leads forward. But, it does not end there, for as St. Paul tells us, all of that we celebrate in these days has taken place so that we might live no longer for ourselves but for him who died for our sakes and was raised. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, our commitment to Renew My Church means that we take our Easter faith seriously to the point that it becomes the source of new energy for communities and individuals who share our faith with the world and bring it hope the world cannot take away. May our faith in the Risen Lord be alive in our hearts, and may we share that gift widely and generously with others. Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

Saint Hugh of Grenoble proves that you can t run away from your problems - even if you run to a monastery. Saint Hugh tried it, and the Pope called him back to his diocese. Once he settled down, Saint Hugh did great things. April 3. Saint Benedict the African, also called Saint Benedict the Moor and Saint Benedict the Black, lived the life of a slave until he was 18. After joining the Franciscans, he held positions of leadership. He was known for his poverty and humility. April 7. Probably best known as the patron of many Christian Brothers schools, Saint John Baptist de la Salle originally had no intention of working with youth or founding a religious community. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will show the love of the Risen Christ by bringing your love to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread. Stewardship thought Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. - COLOSSIANS 3:2 On this day we thank God for His Son, Jesus, who died and rose for us. We celebrate and sing Alleluia. Let s try to keep the joy of this Easter season in our hearts throughout the year! Pray daily and listen for how He is calling each of us to joyfully use our gifts to fulfill His salvation plan. Question of the Week How can I bear witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ in the world today? Can I take the risen Christ I receive in the Eucharist and make him present in my daily life? Treasures from our tradition The Paschal Mystery is the key to our Christian faith: the dying and rising of Jesus that is the pattern of our life. In their first steps on the road of faith, the catechumens feel the cross of glory traced over their eyes, on their lips, across their shoulders, on their ears, over their heart, and on their feet. The mystery is that even death gives way to life for those who are held in the embrace of Jesus. Today, many new Christians arise from the waters of the font. Yet the font is not the destination of their journey. The goal is Pentecost, fifty days from now, and a lifetime of praise to the Father, in Christ, in the embrace of the Holy Spirit, for the sake of the world. "Neophyte," our ancient word for newly-baptized people, means "newly-planted" in Greek. If someone in your parish has just been baptized, welcome them today. The smiles on their faces and the light in the eyes is a foretaste of heaven. -Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Wills / Bequests After providing for your loved ones, please consider naming Saint Hugh Parish as a beneficiary of your estate. The feast day of our parish patron saint is April 1 - no fooling St. Hugh was born in 1053 in southeastern France at Châteauneuf-sur-Isère, near Grenoble in the western foothills of the Alps. Such was his reputation for piety and theological knowledge that, although only in his midtwenties, Hugh was elected bishop of Grenoble even though he had not yet been ordained. He was selected to carry out reforms of abuses within the Church which had been instituted under Pope Gregory VII, who ordained Hugh in Rome after his election as bishop. After two years of successfully battling abuses in Grenoble such as simony (the selling of church positions) and enforcing rules about clerical celibacy, Hugh wanted to retire to the great Benedictine monastery at Cluny. However, Pope Gregory ordered him to remain in his position as bishop. He was well-known for his inspired preaching and his generosity to the poor. In 1084, Hugh helped St. Bruno of Cologne and six of his companions found the great Carthusian monastery "La Grande Chartreuse" high in the Alps. They devoted their monastic life to prayer and study and were visited by Hugh often. It was reported that, as much as he could in his role as bishop, Hugh adopted the monastic way of life practiced by the monks at Chartreuse. The 2005 film, Into Great Silence, documented the daily life at La Grande Chartreuse. After many years of illness which he endured in patient silence, St. Hugh died on April 1, 1132 and was canonized only two years later by Pope Innocent II.
