When the August 6 is a Sunday, the Transfiguration is celebrated. This year there is no Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

2 From the Pastor s Desk Today is the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Annually on August 6, forty days before the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14, we celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord on top of Mount Tabor. When the August 6 is a Sunday, the Transfiguration is celebrated. This year there is no Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. See Father Paul Turner s article on page four of this bulletin regarding the celebration of Feasts on the liturgical calendar. The Gospel for the skipped Sunday is the Matthew version of the multiplication of the Loaves and Fish. The reason that I call this to our attention is that the Gospel passage for next Sunday begins: After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat. Our annual parish picnic is scheduled for Sunday August 20 following the am Mass. For those who were unable to register for programs of Religious Education, the picnic will provide another opportunity. Other parish ministries will also have representatives available to sign up new members and volunteers. Free food makes this a great event for parishioners of all ages. St. Hugh Faith Formation Scholarship Program We have begun the Faith Formation Scholarship Program to assist families who are struggling to pay for their child s Religious Education classes. While no student is ever refused for financial reasons, our budget is much tighter when families are not able to cover our costs. A $125 Scholarship will cover the cost for one student to attend our Religious Education program for a year. Smaller donations will help with other programs such as Children s Liturgy of the Word, Youth Ministry, and Thursdays@7. Our parish website, has more information about our Faith Formation Programs. Donations labeled SCHOLARSHIP may be placed in the collection basket or brought to the parish office. Of musical note Formed As One: Union of Voices, Unity of Hearts Prior to the NPM convention, I attended their Leadership Retreat. Lorraine Hess focused on Mary and Martha in the Gospels. She encouraged us who feed the whole body of Christ to take a moment to remember why we love this work so much. She guided us to ask, Where am I now? as well as Where am I going? as we practice surrender. Each of us wrote a letter to God asking what God thinks of me. Lorraine encouraged us to continue to let God work in us to discover what is the most important thing. Precisely, a feast does not rank as high as a solemnity, but it does rank above a memorial. In everyday speech we use the word to cover almost any special day, such as the feast of St. Valentine or the feast of St. Patrick. But the official calendar does not include these in its special category of feasts. Feasts include some special events in the lives of Jesus and Mary (Birth of Mary, Visitation, Holy Innocents, Presentation, Baptism of the Lord and Transfiguration); days associated with apostles, evangelists, and archangels; and days of historical significance honoring the deacon and martyr Lawrence, the dedication of the cathedral church of Rome (John Lateran), and the first display of the relics of the cross (Exaltation of the Holy Cross). In the United States, the celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe is observed as a feast. Locally, feasts are observed for the principal patron of the diocese, the anniversary of the cathedral s dedication, the patron of a region or wider territory, and other days proper to an individual church or religious order. So, for example, if your cathedral is named for St. Patrick, March 17 is observed as a solemnity there and as a feast in the parish churches of the diocese. But it is an optional memorial in other dioceses. Mass on a feast day includes the Glory to God and special readings from the lectionary. When certain feasts fall on a Sunday (Presentation, Baptism of the Lord, Transfiguration, John Lateran, and Exaltation of the Cross), they replace the Sunday liturgy. Treasures from our tradition As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centuries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, became fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eucharistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural construction. The city of Rome was in a terrible condition by that time, and a series of political upheavals, plagues, and invasions swept through. Not much of Rome's former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled people. The structures of law and administration were swept away in the chaos, and the pope gradually assumed authority to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city's only glory. The Romans wanted "good order" not only in their civic life, but in their liturgy. One prayer, increasingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musical instruments entirely) was the new rule of the day.
