Marchwiany Eleventh Pastor of Saint Hugh Parish Born and raised in Poland, Father Marchwiany came to Chicago as a seminarian and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese by Francis Cardinal George on May 24, He has served as the Pastor of Saint Florian Parish (Chicago) since His previous assignments as Associate Pastor were to: Saint Luke (River Forest), Saint Albert the Great (Burbank) and Saint Louise de Marillac (LaGrange Park). He begins his ministry at Saint Hugh Parish on July 1, 2018.

2 From the Pastor s Desk Today is the Fifth Sunday of Lent. During the Mass we will celebrate the Third (and final) Scrutiny for our Elect who are preparing for Sacraments of initiation through the RCIA. Continue to pray for Jamie Conroyd, Melanie Rios, and Jesus Pelayo. Pray too for those in our Religious Education program who are preparing for First Holy Communion on April 22 and for Confirmation on April 29. This is the last full week of Lent. The Sixth Sunday, rendered as Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion, begins Holy Week. Lent ends before the evening services on March 29. The Sacred Paschal Triduum (three days) begins with evening Mass of Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday. While the church does not endorse candidates or parties, parishioners are encouraged to vote in Tuesday s election and to exercise Faithful Citizenship. Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Solemnity of Saint Joseph Joseph, the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, has been honored on March 19 since the end of the tenth century. In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. He is the patron of workers, carpenters, and of fathers; also Austria, Belgium, Bohemia, Canada, Mexico, Peru, and Vietnam. Joseph is mentioned in Eucharistic Prayers I-IV. With the highest rank of Solemnity, Monday is a liturgical break in the Lenten season. Monday March 19 is also the fifth anniversary of the installation of Pope Francis as the Supreme Pastor of the Universal Church. Pray for him. The promise made by the LORD in the first reading is very bold. He says that all people shall know him, without having to be taught by others. He doesn't restrict the promise to only the holiest people: He says that the way people will know Him is through forgiveness of their sins. Remember, he is speaking to the Israelites, who had so many laws and commandments, they needed scribes and Pharisees to keep track of them. When they broke a commandment or law, they were isolated from the community. So the promise that God would place his law in their hearts meant they would be free to do God's will because they want to, not because they were feared punishment or rejection. Jesus says something similar in today's gospel. He tells the disciples that his crucifixion would draw everyone to him. Now, Jesus' death showed that he took on the punishment for sins in place of us, who deserve it. In Luke's gospel he even prays for those who crucified him, asking God's forgiveness. (Lk 23:34) By dying on the cross, Jesus shows how much God loves us. By rising from the dead, he shows that we can rise from sin to a new life of faith and love. Getting back to the first reading, we experience that promise when we bring our sins to God. When we forgive people who have hurt us, we also help them to experience that love. After all, if I can forgive someone, surely God will forgive them. We also help others to know God when we share or experience of being forgiven. Still not sure if God has forgiven you? The sacrament of Reconciliation gives us the assurance of God's forgiveness, as well as the experience. Along with the other sacraments, it helps us keep God's love in our hearts. We know very little about Saint Joseph, except that he was the husband of Mary and fosterfather of Jesus. Scripture calls him a just man and points out a few incidences in which he showed virtuous behavior. After he and Mary found Jesus in the Temple, Saint Joseph is not mentioned again. March 24. I was born in Los Angeles, CA, but grew up in Cicero, IL, and live in Lyons. I spent most of my life not sure whether or not there was such a thing as a Supreme Being, a true religion, or even moral or ethical constants. Having been born and raised into the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, (Jehovah's Witnesses) I left that organization more disillusioned and dismayed than I had ever imagined, and yet, the farther away from Christ I would be, the emptier I felt. In exploring other philosophies and belief systems, my search for truth and purpose would continually lead me back to Christ. It was truly an amazing and gratifying experience to further study and explore the Catholic faith, only to find that the more I would research the claims, teachings, and practices of the Catholic Church, the more confirmation and affirmation of these teachings and claims I would discover in Church history, in the practices and teachings of the Church fathers, in the Sacred Scriptures, and in the vast body of Christ throughout time, and it was then that I knew I wanted to become Catholic. Question of the Week When I forgive someone who hurt me, do I truly forget it or does it continue to affect our relationship? How can I let go of the injury? How can I be confident that forgetting it will help? Vincentian reflection In the Gospel today, Jesus says Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me. When we help the poor we are truly followers of Jesus, servant of the poor. Stewardship thought I will be their God and they shall be my people. JEREMIAH 31:33 What does it mean to be God s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren t owners of anything, we are merely stewards of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us. In Hebrew, the word means "olive press," and it was an olive grove, although only a few trees remain. Olives can't be eaten off the trees, they need to be cured--knocked from the trees at harvest time, scooped into a stone basin, and cracked open by a heavy millstone. The crushing stone weight was itself called a "gethsemane," and once it was lowered onto the olives, oil from the fruit and the inner stone would drip into a groove and flow into jars. The night before his death, Jesus experienced such anguish that scripture says his own blood perspired from him, an image no one who understands olive oil production could miss. Today, the Mount of Olives is within the city of Jerusalem and the site of the Church of All Nations, also known as the Basilica of the Agony. It was built in 1924, funded by Catholics in twelve different countries. An open-air altar on the grounds is used by Anglicans on Holy Thursday every year. Nearby is the Russian Church of Mary Magdalene, built by the czar in 1888, its magnificent golden domes a distinctive landmark. There is also another tiny Catholic Church, called Dominus Flevit, or "The Cry of the Lord," built in a teardrop shape in the mid-1950s.
