2 From the Pastor s Desk Today is the final Sunday of the liturgical year. It is celebrated as the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. A new year of grace will begin with the First Sunday of Advent on December 3. Throughout November we pray for those who have gone before us. Our Book of Remembrance is near the baptismal font and Paschal Candle. The bulletin cover has your formal invitation and an explanation of the process to find the eleventh pastor of Saint Hugh Parish. You are strongly encouraged to participate in the process, expressing your ideas and suggestions about the qualities you deem important in my successor. At the same time, I invite you to pray for the priests in this transition process. We are relying on the Holy Spirit to direct us to pastorates that best serve the needs of the local church as the parishes of the Archdiocese move ahead with Renew My Church. As a weekly bulletin feature, the column by Father Paul Turner is ending. Sadly, that bulletin inserts we purchased, copyrighted in 2012 to introduce the new translation of the Roman Missal, have not been updated for individual parish use. We conclude with his commentary on the Infant Jesus of Prague. This image of the child Jesus in full priest vestments is found in the back of our parish church near the stairs to the choir loft. Our thanks to those who continue this devotional prayer, adorn the image with flowers, and maintain the liturgical vestments. In providing this honor, our parish is blessed. While his words may no longer appear in our printed bulletin, we will continue to rely on Father Paul Turner s scholarship as a source for the priest s introduction and conclusion of the Universal Prayers (petitions) on Sundays. Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Father Reszel During this time of pastor transition, ask that our patron saint intercede for our parish. Saint Hugh of Grenoble...pray for us. Saint Hugh of Grenoble ( ) Pious and theologically facile since childhood, he was a canon, not yet ordained priest, when the Council of Avignon named him bishop and assigned him the diocese of Grenoble during the reforms of Pope Gregory VII, who ordained Hugh personally in The Church was battling corruption and violations of celibacy within its own members, lay control of Church property, and general religious indifference or ignorance. After two years, he wanted to resign and enter a monastery, but the Pope asked him to stay - and he did for the next 50 years. He was reasonably successful as a reformer, was an eloquent preacher and fearless supporter of the Papacy. In 1084, he welcomed Bruno of Cologne and six of his companions after seeing them under a banner of seven stars in a dream. He installed them in the snowy heights of Chartreuse, where they founded the first Carthusian monastery. He died in 1132 and was canonized just two years after his death. Infant Jesus of Prague by Paul Turner The religious articles in almost every Catholic home include a devotional statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague. It usually stands about 18 inches tall, and it depicts Jesus as a very young child, standing upright, holding a globe in one hand and imparting a blessing with the other. The image is covered with royal vesture. The devotion can be traced to the 16th century, when images of Jesus whether in his infancy or on the cross stressed his humanity as well as his divinity. The two upraised fingers on the right hand of the statue symbolize these two natures. The original statue was brought from Spain to Prague by a royal family who gave it to the Carmelite monastery and church of Our Lady of Victories. The statue was lost for a time during the Thirty Years War, but it was recovered, restored, and given a chapel where it is still venerated. Devotion spread from Prague throughout Europe and the rest of the world. The faithful of various regions and times adorned some statues with clothes, and this custom has been widely adopted for the Infant Jesus. The statue honors the virtues of childhood its simplicity, dependency, and spirituality. Yet it also recognizes the special case of the child Jesus, who was also truly God, and who rules our hearts as king. One of the Carmelites keeping custody of the statue said the Infant Jesus spoke these words to him in a vision: The more you honor me, the more I will bless you. The statue has been especially venerated on a day in the third week of May, during a time of year when the church celebrates the ascension of Christ to his eternal throne. Vincentian reflection Today as we celebrate Christ the King, we hear Jesus say: whatever you did for one of the least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Question of the week Having myself been found by divine mercy, what will I do during Advent to seek those in need? Are they already right here in front of me? Treasures from our tradition Today we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the liturgical cycle of Sundays only in In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the vantage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today's world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. -Rev.
