2 From the Pastor s Desk Today is the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Much is happening as we conclude Respect Life Month. Parishes have been asked to assist those affected by recent natural disasters: the earthquakes in Mexico and the hurricane in Puerto Rico. You will notice a basket at the back of church for donations to the humanitarian and recovery efforts. The Bake Sale after Masses will help defray the costs of sending parishioners in high school to the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis next month. Our teens will also host a Sloppy Joe fundraising dinner in Keating Hall on Saturday November 4. Our Halloween themed B-I-N-G-O is today, Sunday October 29. Doors open at 12:30pm Bingo starts at 2:00pm. Must be 21 or older. Buy-in packets are $35. Good luck. Tonight at 6:00pm the choirs and musicians of the four parishes in our Renew My Church grouping will offer a free concert at St. Hugh. Our music director, Fran Serpe, was instrumental (pun intended) in bringing together the music ministers from Mater Christi (North Riverside), St. Mary (Riverside), and St. Pius X (Stickney) for this program of song and friendship. While all of this is going on here, Sue Stafford will be receiving the Chistifideles award from Cardinal Cupich at Holy Name Cathedral. Congratulations! The regular meeting of the Parish Finance Committee is Monday October 30 at 7:00pm Following Tuesday s rituals of Halloween, welcome to November. November 1 is the Solemnity of All Saints, a holy day of obligation in our country. Masses on Wednesday will be at 10:30am and at 7:00pm. November 2 is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed or All Souls Day. The 10:30am Mass on Thursday (and the 7:00pm Mass on 11/1) will include recognition of those who were buried from our parish during the previous year. The final month of meteorological autumn draws our attention to the end times and issues of death. Throughout November we will pray for those who have gone before us. Our Book of Remembrance will be placed near the baptismal font and Paschal Candle. Already inscribed will be the names of those whose funerals were at Saint Hugh during the past year. We will then add the names given to us on the special All Souls envelopes. You may also write in the names of recently deceased loved ones who will be prayerfully remembered at the parish Masses. The first Sunday of November is recognized as Cemetery Sunday. The first full week of the month, November 5-11, is recognized as National Vocations Awareness Week. Ask Our Lord for more dedicated, holy priests, deacons and consecrated men and women. May they be inspired by Jesus Christ, supported by our faith community, and respond generously to God s gift of a vocation. Father Reszel All Saints by Paul Turner In designating one day on our calendar for all the saints, the church chooses a time to honor our heroes the men and women whose example we admire. Coming near the end of the church year, the solemnity of All Saints invites us into the mystery of death and the promise of eternal life. An early tradition placed the festival on May 13. According to one story, Pope Boniface IV (himself a saint) began the celebration in Rome. On that date in 609 he dedicated a very old building as a new church. The Pantheon had been built to honor all the pagan gods, but Boniface rededicated the building as a Christian church in the seventh century. He brought the relics of the martyrs from the catacombs to this famous public place of worship. The parade of relics changed the Pantheon from a place for worship of all the pagan gods to a place that honored Mary and all the Christian saints and in turn the one Christian God. Eventually the idea of a feast of all saints was transferred to Nov. 1, near the end of the church year. The church honors many saints with a day of their own on the general liturgical calendar, but there are many more saints than those. Since Vatican II, the number of men and women canonized as saints has increased considerably. Although we do not celebrate all their names on specific dates in all our churches throughout the year, we do gather them as one on this day. Secular tradition has turned the eve of All Saints into a kind of antifestival, a night when heroes of the underworld take command. Vincentian reflection In this Sunday s Gospel we find the truth that loving God isn t merely a matter of fervor in our hearts, but that it must be expressed in doing good for the sake of others. Treasures from our tradition This week we have in All Souls' Day a commemoration that is linked to the Halloween customs. The bigspending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thursday's grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The "Day of the Dead" is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life's sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the threeday feast from August to synchronize it with the Christian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits.
