2 From the Pastor s Desk Today is the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. A couple of weeks ago, I used this space to encourage a spirit of welcome with suggestions for extending hospitality. A reversepsychology variation on that idea is found in Father Paul Turner s column on page four of this bulletin. Two parish groupings were part of the Pilot Stage of Renew My Church (RMC). As they complete their work, five more groupings will now participate as we Ramp Up to a full Phase One. From our Vicariate, the parish grouping that includes Saint Celestine (Elmwood Park), Saint Cyrian (River Grove), and Saint William (Chicago) is beginning the RMC process. As this major initiative of the Archdiocese of Chicago progresses, pray for all the parishes (parishioners and priests) involved. The Saint Hugh parish grouping also includes Saint Mary (Riverside), Mater Christi (North Riverside), and Saint Pius X (Stickney). The RMC Prayer is in the next column. Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Father Reszel Renew My Church prayer Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and enable us to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen Fatima Centennial Our next monthly activity will be held in church at 1:00pm on Saturday August 19, the 100th anniversary of the apparition that month. 4 Stewardship thought The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word but then the cares of the world and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. - MATTHEW 13:22 Does the lure of riches and material goods choke God out of your life? Are you so caught up in worldly activities that you have no time for God? Stewardship is a lifestyle to be lived every day. It effects all the decisions we make. What we receive at Mass every Sunday should be shared with others all the other days of the week. Wills / Bequests After providing for your loved ones, please consider naming Saint Hugh Parish as a beneficiary of your estate. Use SCRIP for ordinary shopping or for a special gift This is our most convenient parish fundraiser since it is connected to groceries, coffee, prescriptions, and other ordinary shopping. The list of participating retailers is posted in the church vestibule and is available at - FUNDRAISING. In stock scrip (gift cards) are available after the weekend Masses and during the week at the parish office. After Mass next weekend, see Marilyn Krebel (4:00), Nina Konopasek (8:00), or Nicki Mendez (10:30). They have instock scrip for: Amazon $10, CVS $25, Dunkin Donuts $10, Home Depot $25, itunes $15, Jewel $25, Kohl s $25, Menard's $25, Starbucks $10, Target $25, Walgreens $25, & Walmart $25. Getting the Least by Paul Turner If you d like to get the least out of going to Mass on Sundays, here are some strategies you can try: Eat a large meal just before going to church. Arrive for Mass late. Sit in the back of the church. Read the bulletin during the service. Don t sing any songs. Don t make the responses. Keep your cell phone turned on and handy to hear your ring tones and send texts. Chew gum. Mentally criticize the appearance of people you see. Be angry about something. It really doesn t matter what. Think constantly about where you are going when Mass is over. Whenever there is time for silent prayer, look at your watch. Let your mind wander throughout the service, but especially during the readings, the homily, and the eucharistic prayer. Never offer to assist as a greeter, usher, lector, communion minister, server, or cantor. Don t contribute to the collection, or if you do, use coins. Avoid eye contact during the sign of peace. Never drink the Blood of Christ at communion. Leave Mass early. After you receive communion, head for the door. Do not return to your seat. You may want to put your car keys in one hand while you receive communion with the other. Drive away as quickly as possible. If others who are trying to get the least are in your way, honk the horn at them. Don t pray at home during the following week, unless an emergency comes up. Treasures from our tradition Two centuries ago, Archbishop John Carroll worried that Americans would not appreciate the linguistic veil over our worship, and asked that the liturgy in the new United States be in English, not Latin. How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two English-speaking countries are members. Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word "Eucharist" comes from the Greek for "thanksgiving." For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the colonial outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. From Rome and Africa, over the next four centuries, the new liturgical language of Latin spread north to Gaul and Britain. -Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
