From the Pastor s Desk Today is the Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. As the second Sunday of Respect Life Month, the Archdiocese of Chicago celebrates this as Inclusion Awareness Sunday.

As a faith community we will pray with and for those among us who are ill or suffering. We call upon the Divine physician as we pray for the sick and for those dedicated to their care.

During the four full weekends of October our ushers will be taking a count at each mass of every body in church. I am pleased that the Saint Hugh October Count has increased each year since 2013.

This recognition is made in collaboration with pathways.org As part of Respect Life Month we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick during the 10:30am Mass on Sunday October 22. As a faith community we will pray with and for those among us who are ill or suffering. We call upon the Divine physician as we pray for the sick and for those dedicated to their care. Please make this communal celebration known to all those who would benefit from receiving this sacrament at this time. During the four full weekends of October our ushers will be taking a count at each mass of every body in church. I am pleased that the Saint Hugh October Count has increased each year since This will be useful information when our parish grouping is called to participate in the Renew My Church process. Please be counted. Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Father Reszel Congratulations 2017 Christifideles Award Suzanne Stafford With the unanimous support of the Parish Pastoral Staff and the Parish Pastoral Council, we were pleased to nominate Sue Stafford for this Archdiocesan honor. She will receive her award from Cardinal Blase Cupich at Holy Name Cathedral on October 29. A longtime parishioner, Mrs. Stafford is a member of our Society of Catholic Women, a Reader and Eucharistic Minister at the 4:00pm Mass, and the maker of the white garments for baptisms. Previous recipients from Saint Hugh: Bob & Sheila Sullivan, Luella Burke, Ann Karasek, Arlene Houda, Liz Shermack, Theresa Schultz & Laverne Candlish, Robert & Dorothy Stephansen, and Lorraine Marek. Halloween is coming watch future bulletins for more details about a community Trunk-or-Treat (in collaboration with Zion Ev. Lutheran Church) here on Sunday October 22. Those wishing to decorate their car and pass out candy should sign-up by completing the form at or by calling by October 16. Plans are being finalized for a Halloween themed B-I-N-G-O in Keating Hall on Sunday October 29. Introductory Rites by Paul Turner The introductory rites help the assembly become a worshiping community. They also prepare us to hear God s word and celebrate the Eucharist. There are several elements to the introductory rites of Mass. The cantor or another minister may introduce the liturgy. We sing the entrance song and make the sign of the cross. The presider greets us. The penitential act or the blessing and sprinkling water follow. We sing the Glory to God. Finally, the presider offers the collect. A lot happens in just a few minutes. The cantor s introduction may tell us about the music, the special nature of the celebration or the ministers of the day. Some communities invite members to greet one another. The entrance song sets the tone of the celebration. We may sing a seasonal hymn or one that refers to the Scriptures of the day. We sign ourselves with the cross, and the presider greets us with a phrase such as, The Lord be with you. Christians can trace that gesture and those words to the earliest days of the church. The penitential act or the sprinkling of water symbolizes our desire to enter this celebration in purity of heart. On most Sundays we sing or recite the Glory to God in praise of the Trinity. This hymn comes immediately after the penitential act, causing us to shift moods rather quickly. The introductory rites all lead to the collect. When the presider says, Let us pray, we pause in silence. This prayer explains why we come for this Mass and gives God praise. It brings the introductory rites to a fitting close. Her contact information is on the back cover. Rehearsals are on Sundays at 9:15am Treasures from our tradition Before long, as we've seen, the four newly constructed Eucharistic Prayers became two. The old Roman Canon faded away into relative disuse after 1600 unbroken years, sometimes heard only at Christmas Midnight Mass or the Easter Vigil. The new Eucharistic Prayer IV, at least in its English form, grates a bit on most hearers, and besides is meant only for Ordinary Time. The reconstruction of the ancient prayer of Hippolytus, Eucharistic Prayer II, is the most familiar, but its brevity sometimes creates an imbalance with the Liturgy of the Word. No wonder that as soon as the creative juices began to flow at the Vatican, people worldwide were trying their hands at new prayers. In 1967, even before the final shape of the new Mass was announced, bishops were asking to adapt that celebration for the needs of children. They wanted to clarify what ought to happen when large numbers of children are at Mass: what could be adapted, omitted, or shortened. Experimentation had already begun. Separate Liturgies of the Word for children were by this time commonplace in Holland and elsewhere in Europe. Catechists were saying that many of our liturgical forms were too complex for the children in their charge, and priests were making adaptations on their own.
