1 God Bless You Father Reszel!

2 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist and ritualize a transition in the life of our parish. This is my final weekend as the tenth pastor of Saint Hugh Parish. Effective July 1, the Rev. Robert P. Marchwiany will begin his assignment as our eleventh pastor. Pray for him. Effective July 1, I will begin my assignment as the fifth pastor of Saint John of the Cross Parish: 5005 S. Wolf Road, Western Springs, IL Pray for me. For the past six years, I have enjoyed writing this weekly bulletin column. Thank you to those who regularly read this space and have put up with my misspellings and grammatical lapses. As in all the duties that come with this office, I have sincerely tried to do my best both for the benefit of this faith community and as the Pastor of a Parish of the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago. At each of the Masses next weekend we will welcome the Rev. Michael Barton, MCCJ as we participate in the seventieth Annual Archdiocesan Missionary Co-operative. Every summer the parishes in Lake and Cook counties dedicate one weekend to reflect on and to pray for the missionary activity of the universal church and to support one cause. This year we are asked to help support the work of the Comboni Missionaries. Our parish knows well the good work of the Comboni Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (MCCJ) particularly through their Mission Center in LaGrange Park and their ministry here each week. I have recently witnessed first-hand their operations in Uganda that both evangelize and care for those in great need. Please be generous in supporting the annual mission appeal. For a final time, I make the sincere request that we will continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Father Reszel Birth of John the Baptist Hold the Locusts The birth of John is much like the birth of Jesus. Neither mother expected to be pregnant. Both were announced by an angel; it should be no surprise that the two mothers got together to discuss these things. Most likely, talking about their experiences helped them to believe what the angel had said. You might say Elizabeth prepared Mary to be the mother of the Savior. And years later John would help people prepare to accept Jesus as their Savior. So how do we imitate John? Probably not by living in the desert and eating locusts and wild honey. (I ll take the honey, but hold the locusts.) Let s look at a few of the things John is known for and how we can learn from them. John lived in the desert to prepare for his ministry. How do we prepare to serve the Lord? Have you ever gone on a retreat? The point of a retreat is not just to get away, but to learn how to pray or to deepen your prayer life. As we learn to pray better, we get to know the Lord better. That brings us to the second way to imitate John: Lead others to Christ. With the power of the Holy Spirit we received in the sacrament of Confirmation, we can give good examples of Christian love, share our faith, stand up for justice, and encourage others to grow in faith. Like John, we may also meet resistance, but we can be confident that the Lord will be with us always. The Greatest Need The world s greatest need is not more Christians but more Christians who practice their Christianity. Anonymous

5 Archdiocese of Chicago; Office of Human Dignity & Solidarity-Immigration Ministry Every threat to the family is a threat to society itself. The future of humanity, as Saint John Paul II often said, passes through the family. So protect your families! See in them your country s greatest treasure and nourish them always by prayer and the grace of the sacraments. -Pope Francis Migrant families who are escaping various forms of violence and persecution in their homeland are being routinely separated at the boarder. Since October 2017, over 700 children have been separated from their parents, including over 100 children under the age of four. On May 4, 2018, DHS stated that it will refer all individuals who cross the border without authorization for criminal prosecution, including adult members of family units. If implemented, this policy will undoubtedly lead to a drastic increase in incidences of family separation. ACTION: Ask Congress to protect immigrant families seeking safety and shelter from violence. Visit for ways to contact your officials. Stewardship Thought Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet. Acts 13:25 Stewardship is a lifestyle, it s not a program or a process. It s how we are called to live our lives twentyfour hours a day, seven days a week! It challenges us to live Godcentered lives, not self-centered lives. Reflect on your daily activities, do you do them for the glory of God or for the glory of your own name? Vincentian Reflection In the Gospel today, we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist and everyone pondered the question: What, then, will this child be? For surely the hand of the Lord was with him. Through your almsgiving you are indeed doing the will of God and your gift placed in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box brings Christ s love and compassion to the poor. Thank You! Scrip (a.k.a. gift cards) Use our most convenient fundraiser for your kick-off to Summer shopping. We have posted a list of participating retailers in the church vestibule. That list is also at In-stock scrip (gift cards) are available after the Masses and during the week at the parish office. Next weekend see Marilyn K (4:00), Rosemary K (8:00), or help needed (10:30) for: Amazon $25, CVS $25, Dunkin Donuts $10, Home Depot $25, itunes $15, Jewel $25, Kohl s $25, Starbucks $10, Target $25, Walgreens $25, Walmart $25 HELP NEEDED We need volunteers to help sell SCRIP after Mass. Mission Appeal June 30 - July 1, 2018 The Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus Funds collected during the Missionary Cooperative Plan go mostly into a small mission projects fund that sponsors people-related projects in Africa and Latin America. Currently many of these projects are directed to refugee resettlement in the Sudan (Darfur included), Uganda, and Congo, AIDS prevention and AIDS orphan assistance, training of local missionaries both lay and religious, women s education at secondary level, establishing wells and other sources of safe water for desert dwellers in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Kenya. Please give generously! Wills / Bequests After providing for your loved ones, please consider naming Saint Hugh Parish as a beneficiary of your estate. Treasures from our Tradition It s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three nativity feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today s birth of the Baptist. Today s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child s advent, but of Elizabeth s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting St. John s fires in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and plunge in to recall your baptism? It s a tradition! --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Question of the Week How can I prepare the way for Jesus in my corner of the world? Can I recognize a desert somewhere in my world that is without Jesus message of hope and comfort? Deceit Reason deceives us; conscience, never. Jean Jacques Rousseau SAVE THE DATE ~ INSTALLATION OF FR. ROBERT MARCHWIANY ~ AUGUST 19, 2018; 10:30AM MASS CELEBRATION & PARISH PICNIC TO FOLLOW!
