In last Sunday s Gospel (Mk 6:1-6), some individuals in the crowd who had known Jesus since He was a boy asked, Is (Jesus) not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us? The ques on that naturally follows (and that several astute parishioners asked me a er Mass!) is: If Mary was ever-virgin, who are Jesus brothers and sisters? This is a great ques on and is o en raised by Protestants as an objec on to Mary s perpetual virginity. Overall, there are about ten instances in the New Testament where brothers and sisters of the Lord are men oned (Ma. 12:46; Ma. 13:55; Mark 3:31 34; Mark 6:3; Luke 8:19 20; John 2:12, 7:3, 5, 10; Acts 1:14; 1 Cor. 9:5). It is important to understand that in biblical usage the terms brother and sister (Greek: adelphos and adelphe; pl: adelphoi) have a wider meaning than in English and are not restricted to the literal meaning of a full or half- brother/sister. In the Old Testament, brother had a wide seman c range of meaning and could refer to any male rela ve from whom you are not descended. For example, Lot is called Abraham s brother (Gen. 14:14), even though, being the son of Haran, Abraham s brother (Gen. 11:26 28), he was actually Abraham s nephew. Similarly, Jacob is called the brother of his uncle Laban (Gen. 29:15). The terms brothers, brother, and sister did not refer only to close rela ves. Some mes they meant kinsmen (Deut. 23:7; Neh. 5:7; Jer. 34:9), as in the reference to the forty-two brethren of King Azariah (2 Kgs. 10:13 14). Addi onally, because neither Hebrew nor Aramaic (the language spoken by Christ and his disciples) had a special word meaning cousin, speakers of those languages o en used the word for brother when meaning cousins. The writers of the New Testament were brought up using the Aramaic equivalent of brothers" to mean both cousins and sons of the same father plus other rela ves and even non-rela ves, and when they wrote in Greek, they imitated the language of the translators of the Septuagint. (The Septuagint was the Greek version of the Hebrew Bible. It was translated by Hellenis c Jews a century or two before Christ s birth and was the version of the Bible from which most of the Old Testament quota ons found in the New Testament are taken.) In the Septuagint, the Hebrew word that includes both brothers and cousins was translated as adelphos, which in Greek usually has the narrow meaning that the English brother has. Unlike Hebrew or Aramaic, Greek has a separate word for cousin, anepsios, but the translators of the Septuagint- and, following them, the writers of the New Testamentused adelphos, even for true cousins. When the Bible was translated into English, the word adelphos was translated as brothers and sisters. We can see, though, that in light of the Hebrew and Aramaic languages this word carries with it a much broader meaning when used in the Bible: it encompasses brothers, sisters, cousins, and other- at mes distant -rela ves. As a result, the biblical references to the brothers and sisters of Jesus could easily denote cousins (the Apostles James and John likely were His cousins) or other rela ves and not blood brothers and sisters. This linguis c fact demonstrates that there is no evidence in the Bible that proves that Mary had other children or that Jesus had blood brothers and sisters. In fact, when we read the Bible in light of the unbroken witness to Mary s perpetual virginity within our Catholic tradi on (da ng back to the first century!), it shows that believing that she was ever-virgin is the most reasonable posi on for us to hold and that there is no difficulty reconciling this fact with biblical references to the brothers and sisters of Jesus. -Fr.
