Thanks! Dear Parishioners, I hope that many of you get the opportunity to enjoy some me for vaca on during these summer days. Summer is a fantas c me to reconnect and spend me with family and friends. I know of many families in the parish that head out with extended families to spend a week or two in places like Florida, Michigan and Montana. For many of my genera on such a trip would have been a luxury we could not have afforded. We in this country should never lose sight of the blessings so many enjoy. We hear a ton of talk about people feeling en tled, and I some mes worry that we take for granted the prosperity that is ours, very o en just by the accident of our birth. That's why we here at Holy Infant make all the efforts we do to reach out to those who do not enjoy our advantages: our St. Vincent de Paul Society, Our Lady s Inn, Meal a Month, casseroles for St. Patrick Center, our St. Wenceslaus Food Pantry, Serve St. Louis, feeding the homeless at Sts. Peter and Paul, and many other individual ini a ves of our parishioners. Thanks to all who regularly strive to prac ce generous stewardship! On another note, this is the me of year that we begin planning for adults who are interested in become Roman Catholic. As many of you know, the process is called R.C.I.A. (The Rite of Chris an Ini a on for Adults), and it is meant to involve the whole parish community in welcoming these new members. This is the me when our parishioners bring to our a en on those they might know who would be open to the invita on to come and see what we are all about. No doubt some people in your own circle have seen how your faith animates you and so have come to experience a desire for a share in the life of God and the Church. Pope Francis put it this way in his encyclical Evangelii Gaudium (the Joy of the Gospel): we cannot forget that evangeliza- on is first and foremost about preaching the Gospel to those who do not know Jesus Christ or have always rejected Him. Many of them are quietly seeking God, led by a yearning to see His face, even in countries of ancient Chris an tradi on. All of them have a right to receive the Gospel. Chris ans have the duty to proclaim the Gospel without excluding anyone. Instead of seeming to impose new obliga ons, they should appear as people who wish to share their joy, who point to a horizon of beauty and who invite others to a delicious banquet. In today s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out two by two to minister to the people. A er the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fa gue, says, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportuni es for quiet mes, par cularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the me today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent mes? VINCENT DE PAUL The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in France in the late 1830s by Frederick Ozanam to meet the needs of the extreme poverty at the me. Records show that the Society was in St. Louis in The central office is s ll located near downtown, but the Society has spread throughout the U.S. Each conference operates within its parish boundaries. People we help know that the money comes from parishioners who are living Christ s words to help others. Presently, we have 20 members who make home visits in pairs to the people who request our help. People we help need not be Catholic, but some have come back to the church because of our help.
