John Speekman Isaiah 66:10-14: Galations 6:q4-18; Luke 10:1-9 Whatever house you go into, let your first words be, Peace to this house! And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him My favourite mural in the Bairnsdale church is the mural depicting purgatory because it brings together two seeming opposites deep suffering and invincible peace. The souls in purgatory all stand upright together in the cleansing fire, palms joined in prayer, voices raised to the God who will one day come for them. The mural depicting hell, on the other hand, is marked by agonizing suffering and chaotic disorder. The word peace can, of course, be used in many different ways. A good dictionary will list these: completeness, soundness, wholeness, quiet, tranquility, contentment, calm, stillness, silence, serenity, and so on My own understanding is that peace, excuse me for being a bit poetic here, that peace is the child of truth and not just the child, but the first born child. If truth reigns in a human heart, if it seeks truth, loves truth, clings to truth and lives truth there will be peace. If there is no truth but only falsehood and lies there will be no peace. Tim Lange will turn 80! We will observe the occasion with 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Boniface on Sunday, July 7th. Your presence will be your gift to us. Dinner follows in the parish hall and socializing until 5:00 p.m. We are preparing for 300 for dinner. About 200 have pre-registered so there should be enough food for all who come. Tim Cone, an excellent violinist and music minister at Sacred Heart Parish in Yankton, will play Ave Maria at Mass and also a couple selections after dinner. Tim is beginning studies for the priesthood this fall. Sweetwater is unable to entertain as advertised earlier. Hope to see you then! St. Boniface Ladies Guild is making the meal for Totus Tuus on Wednesday, July 17th. We need help making food as well as help serving that day. 3 AREA EVENTS cont..j.c. Camp update J.C. Camp is July at Tintern Retreat and Resource Center in Oakdale, Ne. Please pray for and encourage these young adults to attend a fun and faith-filled 5 days. This conference is an effort of the Archdiocese of Omaha to provide menin our region with an opportunity to come to know their faith better, network with other Catholic men, and receive spiritual nourishment. This annual event is also informative in that it will provide area men with a view into the many opportunities for spiritual and intellectual growth available to them and opportunites they can take advantage of in their own parishes. This year s conference will feature former All Pro NFL wide receive, Danny Abramowicz, FOCUS Missionary Founder and President, Curtis Martin, Director of Formation for the Western Province Dominicans, Fr. 4 PASTOR S CORNER continued The eldest child of peace is joy. We all know that. This is why the peaceful heart is the greatest ambassador for truth; its most attractive and powerful witness. Joy based on truth is irresistible to all but the most hardened of hearts. And another offspring of peace is harmony. So closely are the two related that we sometimes use the words interchangeably. When a heart is at peace it will bring harmony to all its relationships and dealings with others, to all its affairs. Truth, peace, joy, harmony and it all begins with truth. So why are the souls in purgatory able to bear their intense sufferings in such peace and joy while the souls in hell can t? Precisely because in purgatory there is truth and in hell there is only falsehood. In purgatory they humbly accept the truth that their sufferings are deserved and necessary; while in hell they suffer in pride, rejecting the justice which keeps them bound. Even here on earth a lie will always brings with it some unhappiness and some sort of disharmony or conflict. And so we can say that just as heaven begins on earth in a peaceful heart, so hell begins on earth in a heart full of lies. SCHOOL NEWS Gracie Dickes, a fourth grader at West Catholic Elementary, received a $500 check for winning the Tar Wars Nebraska State Poster Contest. Her first-place poster is officially entered in the 2013 Tar Wars National Poster Contest, and she has been invited to attend the National Conference in Washington, D.C., for an awards ceremony and a visit to Capitol Hill to meet with Nebraska s congressional leaders. Congratulations Gracie! PARISH NEWS cont. Merlin and I have moved our family to the exciting city of Independence, MO. We want to thank and bless each of you for the kindnesses you have shown us while we were part of St. John the Baptist Parish. Please know you all are in our prayers daily. Merlin and Pat Lammers TOTUS TUUS Holy Family Parish and the parishes of St. Boniface, St. John and St. Joseph will be hosting Totus Tuus at Immaculate Conception Hall in St. Helena this year. For grades 1-6, the program runs Monday-Friday, July 15-19, 9 am - 3 pm. For junior high and high school youth, Sunday- Thursday, July 14-18, 7:30 pm - 9:40 pm. Instructors will be college youth and/or seminarians. Bussing and lunch will be provided. Cost is $10/child or $25 for families (3 + children). No cost for high school/junior high program. There are enrollment forms in the back of each church or you can contact Michelle Paltz for more information at or e- mail: fullhouse@gpcom.net Forms can be turned in to your parish office. July 17, Wednesday Parish Potluck Supper 6:00 pm, Immaculate Conception Parish Hall, St. Helena - All members of Holy Family Parish and St John the Baptist, St. Boniface, and St. Joseph are invited to attend. Please bring a hot dish or a cold dish to share. Drinks, cups, plates and silverware will be provided. AREA EVENTS Sacred Relics Of The Saints: Treasures Of The Church Holy Family Parish will host a teaching and exposition of Sacred Relics on Sunday July 28 at 2:00 pm at Immaculate Conception church, St. Helena. Father Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross will be here with his very special ministry to teach about these holy objects. He will bring over 150 relics, some as old as 2000 years. Among the treasures will be relics of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the "Little Flower"), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. Also present will be a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as well as one of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the world. Those attending will be able to examine and venerate each relic. In the Church's history many miracles and healings have been worked in the presence of relics. Please do not miss this opportunity. You are encouraged to bring your articles of devotion (rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and pictures of ill loved ones which you will be able to touch to the reliquaries as a means of intercession.
