ANYONE MAY ATTEND THE ADULT PART TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE MASS. WE WILL PROBABLY BE MAKING SOME TWEAKS IN THE CALENDAR BECAUSE OF PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES IN LATE OCTOBER. STAY TUNED. Thinking Ahead: Pastoral Council will meet on Sept. 28. Clergy Conference: Oct No mass on Monday or Tuesday, Oct Annual Blue Mass: We honor all those in our community are considered first responders: County Sherrif s Department, Volunteer Fire Fighters, Sate Patrol, EMT s, members of the National Guard. It is called the Blue Mass because of the traditional color of the policemen when this tradition first started in other places. This year, the second year, we host it here in Hartington. It takes place on Monday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. Would love to see the church filled. Id like to have the 4th Degree KC s be in attendance to be an honor guard. LEAVING ON A JET PLANE: I will be gone from the parish Oct. 30-November 9 (recovering on the 10th). All Souls Day: We will have a special evening mass on Tuesday, November 14 at 7:00 pm to remember all those who have died and especially those who have died this past year, so, mark your calendars. VOCATIONS: Vocations are all of our concern. A vocation is a call from God to personally spend one s life serving God through one s life choice be it marriage, priesthood, religious life or the single life. To be a Disciple of the Lord is to take seriously one s Confirmation by being an intentional follower of the Lord. You can do that as a married person by consciously living your sacrament with your life partner. Deepening this call means praying together, coming to Mass regularly, leading your children in prayer and going on such things as a CEC weekend. Another way to be a Disciple is to enter into a deeper walk by becoming a priest. This call is coupled with a call to celibacy and it means sharing your whole life with the Church in a number of different possible capacities, one of which is Diocesan Priesthood. Another way to be a Disciple is to respond to the call to be a Deacon. This call can be coupled with ones Marriage vocation or it can be lived as a single person. We need young men to consider being a priest and we need men to consider being a deacon. We, as pew-dwelling parishioners can also encourage these vocations by noticing the qualities in a person that would make them a good priest or deacon. We can also notice qualities in a person like a young lady that make us think she has a vocation to the Religious Life. We are going to take a serious look at the young men and men of our parish who might make good priests or deacons. I will be preaching my homily on Oct. 7-8 on the subject of vocations to the priesthood and diaconate. 4 Page 4 EOHSJ Convention: The acronym stands for Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Its the convention that I attended last weekend. You might have seen the news reports of the protests going on in St. Louis over a judges ruling on a police officer...well I did not go down there to participate in them...but we were affected. Security was tight, police were not taking any chances with the 750 folks at our convention. Several outdoor activities were canceled and the busses taking us to the Cathedral reminded me of the old C.W. McCall - Convoy, (breaker 1-9 rubber duck) a 1975 song about a convoy of trucks going cross country. Not unlike a string to busses carrying 750 people with police escort across the city of St. Louis and back again, twice. The group I belong to is a major charitable body that is international in character with about 30,000 members. Its purpose is to support the church in the Holy Land. This means basically funding the work of the Archdiocese of Jerusalem (which includes Israel, Jordan, the Palestinian Territories and Cyprus) and it supports about 50% of the cost of the schools there - about as many students as we have in the Archdiocese of Omaha. An example of what we do: One of the problems in Jordan is that the government has made a big push to raise salaries in the government schools and you can imagine the impact that has on the Catholic Schools. So our organization is working to raise salaries in our schools or they will loose more of their good teachers. (sound familiar?) The talks at the convention were very good and the liturgies were beautiful. The fellowship was also wonderful seeing people from the 8 states that the Northern Lieutenancy of the Order that this convention included.
