With Baptism we come immersed in that inexhaustible source of life that is the death of Jesus, the greatest act of love in all of history; and thanks to this love we can live a new life, no longer at the mercy of evil, of sin and death, but in the communion with God and with the brothers, he said. Thanks to Baptism, we are capable of forgiving and to love even those who offend us and hurt us, that we can recognize in the last ones and in the poor the face of the Lord who visits us and comes close to us and with this Baptism helps us to recognize in the face of the needy, in those suffering, even in our neighbor, the face of Jesus. It is a grace of this strength of Baptism, he said. Arriving to the third and final aspect of his catechesis, the 77 year old Pontiff, reminded the faithful that Baptism cannot be conferred on oneself but rather by someone who administers it in the name of the Lord. Dear Parishioners and Visitors: From birth to baptism is truly an experience of life and faith. Both experiences capture a new beginning, a new starting point, and a new journey. Birth gives life and love into a family of humanity. Baptism brings about regeneration and incorporation into a family of divinity, the Body of Christ. The span between birth and baptism can vary differently from one person to the next. As Catholics, infant baptism is an important journey into the life of Christ and the doorway to the sacramental life of the Church. There are those who are in RCIA, who would be baptized much later in life, and through their conversion experience, the water of baptism truly signifies this reality of cleansing and welcoming into the life with Christ and the Church. Please recall and reflect upon the celebrations of your birth and/or of your baptism. Rite of Acceptance This Sunday, our church will welcome our RCIA candidates for the first time and promise to pray for them as they are making a public statement in the readiness and commitment to join the Catholic Church; many of our candidates have been attending the RCIA classes every Monday at 7:00pm; I am grateful for the leadership and coordination of Fran Manion, Dolly Tidalgo, and Cay Chiuco with the RCIA program. Please pray for our candidates. Bible Study Program: Every Wednesday 6:30 to 7:00PM Starting January 22 in the Church It has been a while since our parish had a bible study program. I have been doing a lot of catechesis during Our Lady of Perpetual Help Novena for the last two years. I focused on a whole series on the meaning and understanding of the Sacraments from both approaches: theology and canon law. In 2013, as the Church celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Vatican II Council, I showed a whole series on the history of Vatican II: development, ecclesiology (mystery of the church), liturgical reform. As we begin 2014, I would like to go back and begin a Bible study for our parish that a number of you have been requesting. Please come and join me in this new series of reading and understanding the bible from the Old to the New Testament. The Bible Study is only for 30 minutes so that it will not consume a lot of your time in the evening. We will be watching video presentations and reading the Word. This project was made possible by the hard work of Fran Manion, who worked for many months, and in collaboration with the parish staff. This year, Cathedral Chapel will begin the process of completing a parish census. Much of the information which was transferred over to the new database is outdated. It is our goal to update all of your records with your current information. Cathedral Chapel Parish Census Program will greatly improve the connections and communications between the church and the members of our parish and school communities. Our new database allows us to engage you as parishioners, more fully. You are not just names, addresses and parish ID numbers. Taking a more personal approach, our new parish database will ask, for example, do your children attend CCS (or are they CCS graduates), which Sacraments have you received at our church, etc. This information will allow us to better serve you. The second reading makes this clear. Here we read of the baptism of Cornelius and his household. Peter s speech recalls the anointing of Jesus by the Holy Spirit and the great power that swept through Israel and onto the doorstep of the Gentile Cornelius. As for his household, so for us. Check the following points to see how you stand in this regard: 1. Are you listed on the parish records? If not, check your parish s registration information and sign up. Better yet, a personal visit of introduction should be made. 2. Do you regularly worship at your parish church? And beyond Sunday Mass, do you make an effort to participate at other parish services? 3. Do you contribute a fair share of your income to the parish? Do you recognize your obligation to the upkeep of parish property? 4. Have you participated over the past year in any parish activity or organization? 5. Have you sought to do what you can to renew your parish in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council? Or do you complain without taking appropriate action? SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Protect your children from accidental poisoning From fertilizer to antifreeze and medicines to makeup, poisonous items show up throughout our homes. By following some common-sense guidelines regarding these items, parents can help prevent kids ingesting poisonous substances by accident. For instance, Store all medications prescription and nonprescription in a locked cabinet, far from kids reach. Even items that seem harmless, such as mouthwash, can be extremely dangerous if ingested in large quantities by children. Just because cabinets are up high doesn't mean kids can t get their hands on what s in them they ll climb up (using the toilet and countertops) to get to items in the medicine cabinet.
